Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A video agent does not necessarily generate video: documented systems may accept video or images while responding with text and audio. The right design depends on the modalities, connection type, and application control your product needs.
How a real-time AI agent works
Unlike a conventional chatbot that sends a complete prompt and waits for a reply, a real-time agent works through an ongoing interaction. A typical implementation links several parts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Capture: A client collects live audio, video, images, or text, depending on the product and API.
- Transport: A supported connection carries media and control messages between the client, an intermediary, or the model service.
- Session: The application or agent framework maintains conversational context and coordinates turns.
- Response and action: The model returns supported outputs or requests a tool call; application logic can handle that call and pass results back into the session.
- Playback and control: The client presents the response and manages events such as a user interrupting the agent.
This is a useful way to reason about the system, not a universal architecture. The exact flow depends on provider support and whether the client connects directly or through a server or framework.

What the current platform patterns offer
| Option | Documented connection and role | Media and interaction details |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Realtime API | OpenAI documents browser connections over WebRTC and server connections over WebSocket. Its browser flow creates an ephemeral client secret on the server before connecting the frontend. | The guide describes speech-to-speech interaction, conversation state, tool calls, audio turns, interruptions, and handoffs. See OpenAI’s Realtime API guide. |
| Google Gemini Live | Google documents SDK and WebSocket approaches, along with third-party integration routes. The API reference describes a stateful WebSocket session. | The documentation describes continuous audio, image, and text input, and exchanges that can include text, audio, video, and function-call information. These capabilities are specific to the documented API and model; do not assume every Gemini deployment supports the same set. See the Gemini Live guide and Live API reference. |
| LiveKit Agents | LiveKit describes Python or Node.js programs joining rooms as real-time participants, using its WebRTC infrastructure. Deployment options described include LiveKit Cloud and a custom environment. | Its platform materials cover audio, video, and data streams. The framework sits between real-time media and agent logic; provider flexibility is described in LiveKit’s Agents documentation. |
These are descriptions from the vendors, not independent comparisons. The documentation establishes features and integration patterns, but does not establish a winner for latency, reliability, cost, or response quality.

Video input is not the same as video output
“Real-time video agent” can mean an agent that receives a live video stream or images and responds conversationally. Google’s cited Gemini Live materials describe audio and visual input with text and audio responses. That does not mean the system generates a video reply. Output capabilities vary by API and model, so verify the exact input and output modalities your chosen version supports.
A video workflow also needs a camera source, but a separate webcam is not automatically required. An integrated camera or another compatible source may be sufficient; the cited documentation does not specify hardware compatibility or recommend a particular device.

Choosing transport and session architecture
Choose the connection based on topology
WebRTC and WebSocket both appear in the documented integration paths, but they serve different architectural arrangements and are not interchangeable guarantees of performance. OpenAI documents WebRTC for browser connections and WebSocket for server connections; Google documents a stateful WebSocket approach for Gemini Live. LiveKit describes WebRTC-based media infrastructure for rooms. Select only among paths supported by the provider and client you intend to deploy. The cited materials do not establish that one transport is universally faster or better.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDecide where agent logic lives
A direct provider integration gives your application responsibility for session behavior and tool handling. A framework can provide a more structured place to run agent logic and connect it to live media. LiveKit, for example, describes agents joining rooms as participants, while OpenAI’s Realtime guide documents tool use and handoffs within a session. Consider whether you want to manage the media and session layers yourself or use a framework and hosted infrastructure.

- Sound excellent anywhere: With dual omnidirectional microphones and noise-canceling tech, this webcam with microphone captures clear audio from up to 1.2 meter away while reducing background noise
- Make it your own: The Logi Options+ app (3) simplifies personal device control with zoom in/out, color presets, color adjustments, set manual focus, and easy firmware updates
Plan for conversation control
Streaming audio is only part of a conversational experience. Before building, define how the application handles turn boundaries, interruptions, tool calls, and handoffs. Check which events the API exposes and which decisions remain your application’s responsibility. A model’s ability to speak in real time does not by itself provide your product’s complete interaction logic.

“Platform” may refer to more than access to a model. Depending on the offering, the stack can include an agent framework, media transport, deployment infrastructure, and observability. LiveKit describes both an Agents framework and hosted or custom deployment options; Google documents its API alongside SDK and third-party integration paths. These offerings are not identical, so compare the specific components you need rather than treating the platform label as a feature guarantee.

A practical build-and-deploy checklist
- Specify the interaction: List required inputs and outputs separately—for example, live audio input, video input, and spoken response.
- Choose a supported topology: Confirm whether the target client can connect directly or needs a server intermediary, and identify the provider-supported transport.
- Design session behavior: Decide how state, turn-taking, interruptions, tool execution, and handoffs should work.
- Select the integration layer: Choose direct API work or a framework and media platform based on how much infrastructure your team wants to operate.
- Check deployment constraints: Confirm the current model or API version, regional availability, pricing, security terms, limits, and deployment options for your intended environment.
- Test the complete path: Validate capture, connection setup, conversation control, tool results, and playback in the actual client and deployment—not only in an isolated model request.
