To help people and search systems find and understand your pages, make them crawlable, keep important information available as text, link to key pages, and describe visible content accurately. There is no single robots.txt rule, AI file, or schema markup that guarantees indexing, an AI answer citation, or traffic. Google’s guidance is that its existing SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode; OpenAI documents separate controls for search-related crawling and training-related use.
How do discovery, crawling, and indexing differ?
Discovery is how a system learns a URL exists; crawling is the request to fetch its content; indexing is the decision to store and potentially show that content in search. These are separate stages, and a directive that affects one does not necessarily accomplish the others.

Google says Googlebot discovers URLs primarily through links on pages it has already crawled. Link to important pages from relevant pages on your site so crawlers and visitors can find them. Google also says most Search indexing uses the mobile version of content, so check that important text and links are available in the version Google receives.
What robots.txt does—and does not do
A robots.txt rule controls whether a crawler may request a path. It is not a removal instruction: Google says a blocked URL may still appear in Search if it is discovered through links, potentially without a crawled description. See Google’s Googlebot documentation.

If your goal is to ask Google not to index a page, use a noindex directive and make sure Googlebot can crawl the page to see it. Blocking the page in robots.txt can prevent Google from fetching that directive, so the two controls are not interchangeable. If the content must be inaccessible to both people without permission and crawlers, use access control such as authentication; robots.txt is not a privacy or secrecy mechanism.
How do I let AI search crawlers access my site?
First decide which uses you permit, then consult each service’s current official crawler documentation. A crawler rule is a policy signal for the documented bot; it is not a universal guarantee about how every system will handle content.

OpenAI search and training controls
OpenAI documents two distinct robots.txt controls: OAI-SearchBot for search-related discovery and GPTBot for training-related crawling. Treat these as separate decisions rather than assuming that allowing one means allowing the other. OpenAI’s documentation says that when both bots are allowed, it may use one crawl for both uses to avoid duplicate crawling. Review OpenAI’s crawler documentation before setting a policy, since bot behavior and documentation can change.
Google’s Googlebot is a separate crawler governed by Google’s crawl and indexing guidance. Rules for one vendor’s bot do not establish access for another vendor’s crawler.

Does Google require llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says a new AI text file, special machine-readable file, or special schema.org markup is not required for its AI Search features. Its generative-AI guide likewise says Google Search does not use llms.txt or other special markup to qualify pages for generative features. This is guidance about Google Search, not a promise about every independent AI service.
Google Search Central states: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” The scope is the Google Search AI features covered by that guidance, which was last updated 2025-12-10 UTC. Google says established SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Make important pages crawlable, link to them internally, provide a useful page experience, and make important information available as text. Keep structured data consistent with the content visitors can see. Google does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or served in Search or an AI feature, even when these practices are followed.

Structured data can help describe a page for features with applicable requirements, but it is not a switch that secures an AI answer. Add it only when it accurately represents visible content and meets the feature’s requirements. Markup that misrepresents the page can undermine clarity rather than improve it. Google’s AI features guidance explains the relationship between structured data and visible content.

Manage search previews deliberately
Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet for controlling search-result previews, as well as noindex for asking that a page not be indexed. Choose a directive based on whether you want to manage a preview, prevent indexing, or restrict access; these outcomes are different. After changing a directive, check what Googlebot fetched and allow time for recrawling and processing.
How can I check whether Google can fetch the intended page?
- Review the site’s
robots.txtrules and any CDN or hosting-level restrictions that could prevent Googlebot from requesting the page. - Open Google Search Console and use URL Inspection for the page. Check the fetched page and the indexing or preview directives Google received.
- Confirm important content and internal links are present in the mobile version Google receives, not only in a version unavailable to the crawler.
- If you changed a crawl or preview directive, wait for Google to recrawl and process the page, then inspect it again before drawing conclusions.
Google’s Googlebot documentation explains the distinction between crawl access and indexing; its AI features guidance covers the fundamentals for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
