Building Enterprise dApps with Smart Contracts and REST APIs

A practical enterprise dApp places an authenticated REST backend between business applications and an Ethereum node, with separate controls for RPC access, transaction signing, and operational status.

For most enterprise applications, the practical way to connect a REST API to a smart contract is to put an application backend between the API’s users and an Ethereum node. The backend authenticates callers, applies business rules, and translates requests into contract reads or signed transactions sent through the node’s JSON-RPC interface. Keep node access on controlled network paths, authorize RPC methods narrowly, and manage transaction-signing keys separately from the blockchain client.

How a REST API connects to a smart contract

A REST API does not normally call a contract directly. It calls an application backend; that backend communicates with an Ethereum node, which relays reads and transactions to the network. Ethereum clients implement a common JSON-RPC specification, and backend libraries can wrap those requests. Besu is one Ethereum client that supports JSON-RPC, but the overall pattern is not specific to Besu.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Accept an application request. An enterprise client calls a resource on the application backend. The route and payload are part of your API design, not universal blockchain endpoints.
  2. Authenticate and validate. The backend verifies the caller’s identity and permission for the requested business operation, then validates the input against application rules.
  3. Handle a read or a state change. For a read, the backend queries the relevant contract through the node and maps the result into the API’s response format. For a state change, it prepares the transaction, obtains a signature through the organization’s selected key-management arrangement, and submits the signed transaction.
  4. Track the outcome. Return a transaction identifier and a clear processing status where appropriate; update the business record as the transaction progresses rather than treating submission as proof of finality.

This separates the stable, user-facing API from blockchain-specific details. The backend can validate and normalize inputs, enforce business authorization, and avoid exposing raw node interfaces or internal errors to API consumers.

Illustrative API shape

A business API might expose a route such as POST /v1/agreements/{id}/approval and return an application-level status plus a transaction identifier. That route is an example, not a Besu endpoint or a prescribed standard. Choose resource names and response states around the business process, and document which states mean that a request was accepted, submitted, confirmed, or failed.

Designing reads and transactions

Contract reads

A read request should identify the contract operation and the data needed to call it. The backend sends the corresponding read through the node and converts the result into a versioned REST response. Define how the API represents missing records, invalid input, stale data, and temporary node unavailability; callers should not have to interpret raw RPC errors.

State-changing requests

A state-changing call is a transaction, not an ordinary synchronous database update. The backend should validate the operation, arrange for the transaction to be signed, submit the signed transaction, and report lifecycle status. A successful submission response means the node accepted the signed transaction for processing; it does not, by itself, establish that the transaction has been included or reached the confirmation threshold your application requires.

Besu documents eth_sendRawTransaction for signed transactions and does not implement eth_sendTransaction. Besu also does not manage accounts or keys internally. Your signing and custody design therefore needs to be decided independently of the choice to use Besu.

Retries, duplicate requests, and reconciliation

Network timeouts can leave an API unable to tell whether a transaction was submitted, even if the node received it. Define idempotency behavior for client retries, retain a durable record linking the business operation to its transaction, and reconcile that record against observed chain status. Make retry rules explicit: blindly resubmitting a business action can produce duplicate or conflicting transactions.

Monitoring should distinguish API availability, node availability, transaction submission, and later transaction status. Define operational handling for stuck or failed transactions, and make API responses clear about whether a client should retry, wait, or contact an operator.

Choosing how the backend reaches Ethereum

Besu supports JSON-RPC over HTTP, WebSocket, and IPC, as well as Pub/Sub and GraphQL. HTTP is suitable for request-response interactions; WebSocket supports ongoing connections, including subscriptions; IPC is for local communication on the host. Choose an interface based on the application’s needs and deployment boundary, rather than exposing every available interface.

The Besu API reference was identified as last updated 2026-09-01. Its documented default host is 127.0.0.1; documented default ports are HTTP JSON-RPC 8545, WebSocket 8546, and GraphQL 8547. These are configuration defaults, not guarantees for every deployment. Check the live configuration and firewall rules before relying on them.

Securing the RPC boundary and signing keys

Restrict network reachability

Keep node RPC endpoints on private network paths where possible, accessible only to the backend components that need them. Besu documentation warns that binding to 0.0.0.0 allows remote connections and advises firewall protection in production. A host allowlist checks request host headers to guard against DNS rebinding; Besu explicitly distinguishes this from permissioning, so it is not a substitute for authentication or access control.

Authenticate callers and authorize methods

Besu documents username/password and JWT public-key authentication, with permissions assignable by API group or individual method. Configure only the methods the application requires, and do not expose administrative RPC namespaces to public clients. Protect credentials and tokens, rotate them according to organizational policy, and avoid returning them or other secrets in API responses or logs.

Use a protected transport

Besu does not itself provide HTTPS. Its documentation recommends placing authenticated traffic behind a network layer that provides SSL/TLS termination. In a production design, protect the connection between the application and RPC endpoint as well as the external REST connection; authentication alone does not encrypt traffic.

Keep custody separate from RPC access

Possession of RPC credentials and authority to sign transactions are different capabilities. Besu advises keeping private keys secret, ideally in hardware or a vault. Decide which service or system is allowed to request signatures, how signing is authorized, and how secrets are kept out of application logs and ordinary API responses. A hardware security module or other hardware-backed custody is a category to assess, not a guarantee that any particular device fits an organization’s needs.

Public Ethereum or a permissioned Besu network?

The choice depends on who must participate, who governs membership, and what properties the workflow requires. Besu private networks are separate from Mainnet and public testnets. Its documentation describes permissioning and consensus options including QBFT and IBFT 2.0; private-network configurations typically use a distinct chain ID. These technical features do not, on their own, settle governance, privacy, legal, or interoperability requirements.

Decision area Questions to resolve
Network access Must transactions be visible on a public network, or should participation be limited to approved organizations?
Governance Who admits or removes participants, sets operating rules, and resolves disputes?
Privacy and legal obligations What information can be placed on-chain, and what requirements apply to the organizations and jurisdictions involved?
Operations Who runs nodes, applies client upgrades, monitors availability, and responds to incidents?
Interoperability and exit How will participants exchange data with other systems, and what would moving away from a managed platform require?

A permissioned network may be appropriate when known participants need a shared ledger under agreed operating rules. It is not automatically more private or simpler to govern: participants still need to agree on membership, data handling, legal responsibilities, and operational ownership.

Build a gateway or use a managed platform?

An organization can operate its own backend-to-node integration or assess a platform that provides some of the gateway and node-management functions. Oracle’s documentation for Oracle Blockchain Platform Enterprise Edition for Hyperledger Besu describes an authenticated and authorized JSON-RPC proxy and REST APIs with OpenAPI documentation. This is a documented option, not an endorsement or a comparative assessment of providers. The documentation edition identified was 26.2; current availability, pricing, and geographic coverage are not established here.

When evaluating any implementation or platform, compare the requirements that affect your architecture and operating model:

  • Whether the network is public or permissioned, and who controls participation.
  • Which interfaces are needed: JSON-RPC, WebSocket subscriptions, GraphQL, or a REST gateway.
  • How identity, authentication, method-level authorization, and key custody are handled.
  • Who operates nodes, performs upgrades, monitors service health, and manages incidents.
  • How portable the application and data are, and what an eventual exit would involve.

Implementation checklist

  • Define the business operations the API exposes and the contract operations each one invokes.
  • Separate read paths from state-changing transactions and specify their different response and status behavior.
  • Keep RPC access inside controlled network boundaries; verify host binding, firewall rules, and exposed methods.
  • Configure authentication, narrow method permissions, and TLS protection for authenticated RPC traffic.
  • Choose and document transaction-signing and key-custody responsibilities separately from node access.
  • Plan for idempotency, retry behavior, monitoring, transaction-status tracking, and reconciliation.
  • For permissioned deployments, agree on membership, governance, privacy, and operational duties among participating organizations.
  • Recheck client configuration defaults and managed-platform details against current vendor documentation before deployment.
