Build an organic cursor reveal by tracking pointer movement over a shared visual container and using those coordinates to control a separate reveal layer. React provides the pointer events; the shape and softness of the reveal come from your CSS or other rendering choice. Keep the native cursor unless replacing it is an intentional part of the design, and provide a reduced-motion alternative.
How the effect is put together
An organic reveal is an art direction, not a built-in React feature: a moving, soft-edged or irregular area exposes one visual state over another. The basic structure is a container holding two aligned visual states and a layer that controls what is visible. Pointer position supplies the input; your styling supplies the reveal geometry.
- Render both visual states in one container. Keep their dimensions and alignment consistent so the reveal does not expose a shifted or differently sized image.
- Track pointer movement on the intended region. React DOM components support pointer movement and pointer enter/leave handlers. Use those events to obtain the pointer position while it is over the reveal area. See React’s pointer-event documentation.
- Map the position to the reveal’s coordinate system. The event position must correspond to the container or layer you style. Choose and implement that coordinate conversion for your layout; the cited documentation establishes the event handlers, not a particular normalization snippet.
- Apply the position to a visual layer. Use the chosen shape and edge treatment to control which parts of the underlying state are revealed. Treat this as a rendering decision: the available documentation does not establish a best method or compatibility guarantee for this particular effect.
- Handle pointer exit. Decide what the composition should show when the pointer leaves—such as returning to its default state—rather than leaving the reveal in an accidental intermediate position.
Choose the reveal rendering technique
Possible approaches include a CSS radial gradient, clip-path, an SVG mask, or canvas. They are options, not interchangeable guarantees: choose according to the shape and visual control you need, then verify the behavior in the browsers and devices your project supports. The cited sources do not compare these techniques for an organic cursor reveal.
For a soft circular opening, a gradient can express a feathered edge; an irregular shape may call for a more authored mask. These are design directions, not a source-verified recipe. Avoid promising a specific result until you have implemented and checked the selected approach.

Decide whether to replace the cursor
A reveal mask and a custom cursor solve different problems. The reveal can follow pointer coordinates while the browser cursor remains visible. That is often the simpler choice because it preserves the familiar pointer without adding a second moving visual element.
| Choice | What it changes | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the native cursor | Pointer position drives the reveal; the browser cursor remains visible. | Does not add cursor replacement behavior. The reveal still needs its own movement and reduced-motion decisions. |
| Add a custom or following cursor | A separate visual element replaces or follows the native cursor. | It is an additional design and interaction layer. Motion documents custom and follow-cursor modes, but the cited material does not establish that either is more suitable or performant for this reveal. See Motion’s React cursor documentation. |
If you do customize the cursor, preserve a meaningful fallback. The CSS cursor property controls the cursor shown over an element, and MDN notes that custom cursor imagery needs a fallback keyword. Cursor appearance can communicate the operation available at a location, so do not hide or replace it without considering interaction clarity. See MDN’s cursor reference.

Keep decorative layers from blocking interaction
If the reveal layer is decorative, it should not accidentally become the target for pointer interaction intended for content beneath it. CSS pointer-events controls whether an element can be a pointer-event target; use it deliberately for the overlay and check that links, buttons, and other interactive content still receive input. See MDN’s pointer-events reference.
Respect reduced-motion preferences
Pointer-following movement is non-essential motion. The prefers-reduced-motion media feature signals that a user prefers non-essential motion to be minimized. When that preference is active, remove the moving reveal, reduce its motion, or provide a static alternative. MDN documents the preference at its prefers-reduced-motion reference.

If you use Motion for a custom cursor, its documentation describes handling reduced motion so the cursor component can be omitted. That is an example of preference handling for its cursor component, not proof that a separate reveal mask is accessible by default. See Motion’s cursor documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse a scroll reveal with a cursor reveal
Motion’s React scroll image reveal example is driven by scroll progress: it uses useScroll, useTransform, and useRef to map scrolling to clipping and transform values. That is a different input model from pointer coordinates, so it is useful as a scroll-linked example rather than a ready-made cursor-reveal implementation.
