Build an internal MCP server by defining a narrow set of tools, choosing a transport that fits where it runs, and enforcing authorization inside the server for every request. Use stdio when an AI host launches a local process; use Streamable HTTP when clients need to reach a remote service. In either case, validate inputs, keep request state explicit, and distinguish tool failures from protocol errors.
How an MCP server fits into an internal system
MCP separates the application roles from the protocol and transport. An AI application is the host; it creates an MCP client connection to each server. The server exposes capabilities such as tools, resources, and prompts. MCP messages use JSON-RPC in the data layer, while the transport handles how messages connect and move. Your product’s business rules and access policy remain the responsibility of your application and server, not the protocol. MCP architecture

A typical internal request path looks like this:
AI host → MCP client → MCP server → internal service or data store

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For example, a server might expose a read-only tool that retrieves a support ticket by ID. The server validates the requested ID, identifies the caller from trusted credentials, checks whether that identity may read the ticket, and then calls the internal ticket service. The model’s request is not proof that the caller has permission.

Choose tools and data boundaries before choosing a transport
Start with the user goal the integration should support, then expose only the actions and data needed for it. Prefer focused tools—such as listing records, retrieving one record, and updating a record separately—over a single tool with unrelated modes. Make each tool’s inputs, output shape, authorization scope, and side effects clear. OpenAI’s MCP server guide
- Tools are the action interface. Separate read operations from writes so their permissions and effects can be reviewed independently.
- Resources are appropriate for retrieving reference or data content. The TypeScript server guide says resources should not perform heavy computation or side effects. TypeScript server guide
- Input schemas define accepted arguments and allow invalid calls to be rejected before a handler runs.
Do not treat hidden UI elements or model instructions as security controls. Least privilege must be enforced by the server and the services it calls.
Choose stdio or Streamable HTTP based on deployment
The transport choice sets the deployment boundary and changes how credentials are supplied. The two options are not interchangeable hosting modes: stdio is designed around a host-launched local process, while Streamable HTTP serves clients over HTTP. MCP architecture MCP specification, 2026-07-28
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision point | stdio | Streamable HTTP |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | A local process launched by the host | A remote service reachable over HTTP |
| Process ownership | The host starts and communicates with the server process | The service is deployed and operated independently of a particular host process |
| Client pattern | Typically one local client per process | Clients connect to a network service; deployment can support remote access |
| Reachability | Standard input/output; no HTTP endpoint is required | HTTP POST, with optional server-sent events |
| Credential guidance | Retrieve credentials from the environment; do not apply the HTTP authorization framework | HTTP implementations should follow MCP’s Authorization framework |
| Operational considerations | Keep standard output reserved for protocol traffic; send operational logs elsewhere | Account for HTTP authentication, network exposure, and service operations |
These are deployment trade-offs, not a performance ranking. The official documentation does not establish a universal winner or comparative benchmark. If the server must be reachable remotely, use Streamable HTTP; if the host launches a local integration process, stdio is the natural fit.

Choose an SDK and validate tool inputs
As of the documentation checked on October 7, 2026, the official TypeScript SDK v2 documentation identifies v2 as the stable release line implementing specification revision 2026-07-28. It shows an McpServer, schema-backed registerTool, and serveStdio; the SDK validates a tool call against its schema before the handler runs. TypeScript SDK v2
The official Python SDK documentation also identifies v2 as current stable, supports stdio, Streamable HTTP, and SSE, and requires Python 3.10 or newer. Python SDK v2
| Choice | Best deciding factors | Documented facts |
|---|---|---|
| TypeScript SDK v2 | Existing TypeScript stack, runtime, and required SDK integrations | Stable v2 line; specification revision 2026-07-28; schema-backed tool registration is documented |
| Python SDK v2 | Existing Python stack, hosting runtime, and integration needs | Stable v2 line; supports stdio, Streamable HTTP, and SSE; Python 3.10 or newer required |
The documentation does not establish that one language or SDK is generally more mature or faster for every deployment. Choose based on the surrounding application and verify that the SDK version supports the transport and features you need. Pin the SDK version and protocol revision in your implementation documentation; both evolve.
A small read-only tool should accept only the fields it needs. In TypeScript v2, follow the current SDK documentation for schema-backed registration rather than copying APIs from the separate TypeScript v1 maintenance guide. The latter is useful for understanding implementation examples, but it is not the current SDK baseline.

Authenticate callers and authorize every operation
Authentication establishes which identity presented a credential. Authorization decides whether that identity may perform a particular action on a particular resource. Verify credentials, map the verified identity to your company’s permissions, and check access in each handler or service call. Do not rely on the model to decide who may read private data or perform an action. OpenAI’s MCP server guide
The current specification distinguishes authentication by transport: HTTP-based implementations should conform to MCP’s Authorization framework, while stdio implementations should not use that HTTP framework and should obtain credentials from the environment. Clients and servers may negotiate custom authentication or authorization strategies. MCP specification, 2026-07-28
For Streamable HTTP
Validate the credential before handling the tool request, then enforce the verified identity’s permissions for the requested action and resource. The TypeScript v1 maintenance guide demonstrates bearer-token middleware: a verifier checks the access token and supplies identity and scope information. Its expectedResource option can require that the token be intended for the MCP server’s resource audience; when configured, a missing or mismatched resource is rejected with 401 invalid_token. Treat this as a security example and verify its APIs against the v2 SDK before using code from it. TypeScript server guide
The same guide warns that localhost host-header protection is not automatically applied when the server binds to all interfaces. Review the bind address and applicable network protections as part of deployment.

For stdio
Retrieve credentials from the environment as the specification recommends for stdio servers. Ensure the host’s process-launch configuration supplies them securely, and avoid printing secrets to standard output or logs.
Apply access checks to the actual resource
Do not accept a caller-supplied user ID as proof of identity. Use the identity established by credential verification, then check the requested resource and action against the company’s authorization system. A valid token alone does not mean the caller may access every record or invoke every tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep request state explicit across calls
An open process or connection is not a reliable conversation boundary. The current specification says clients may interleave unrelated requests on the same transport; any state that must span requests needs an explicit identifier passed with each request. MCP specification, 2026-07-28
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a multi-user internal server, derive identity from verified credentials and use explicit, validated resource or task identifiers for application state. Do not infer which user or conversation a request belongs to from the fact that it arrived on an existing stdio process or HTTP connection.

Return the right kind of error
Keep protocol failures separate from failures while carrying out a valid tool request. A malformed JSON-RPC message or invalid protocol parameters should be reported as a protocol error; a business-level failure during tool execution should be returned as an explanatory tool result, marked as an error where the SDK supports it. The TypeScript server guide shows handlers returning explanatory content with isError: true. TypeScript server guide
| Failure | Handling |
|---|---|
| Parse error | JSON-RPC error -32700 |
| Invalid request | JSON-RPC error -32600 |
| Method not found | JSON-RPC error -32601 |
| Invalid params | JSON-RPC error -32602 |
| Internal error | JSON-RPC error -32603 |
| Missing required protocol metadata | The current specification treats the request as malformed and requires rejection as invalid parameters; HTTP status is 400 |
| Required client capability is absent | Return MissingRequiredClientCapabilityError (-32021) and identify the missing capability |
The standard JSON-RPC error codes above are listed in the architecture documentation. MCP architecture error list For normative behavior on malformed metadata and missing capabilities, follow the current specification.
For an expected tool failure, tell the client what condition prevented the operation and whether a correction or retry may help. Do not return stack traces, credentials, or internal implementation details to the caller.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set input limits and make operations observable
Apply schema validation and sensible limits to tool inputs, especially for large nested arguments. The TypeScript v1 maintenance guide describes a default 4 MiB maximum request body size for its Streamable HTTP transport and an optional maxToolInputElements guard. These are version-specific SDK defaults, not protocol-wide limits; verify them against the exact SDK release you deploy and set limits to fit legitimate workloads. TypeScript server guide
For operational logs, record stable request IDs, tool names, outcomes, and latency. Include authenticated subject identifiers only where policy permits. Avoid logging bearer tokens or other secrets. These practices support troubleshooting without turning logs into another credential store.
Quick Recap
Implementation checklist
- Define the user goal and expose only the necessary tools, resources, and data.
- Choose stdio for a host-launched local process or Streamable HTTP for a remote service.
- Use schemas to validate tool inputs and cap accepted sizes to legitimate workloads.
- Verify credentials and enforce resource- and action-level permissions on every request.
- Use explicit identifiers for state that spans requests; never treat a connection as a user or conversation boundary.
- Keep protocol errors distinct from tool execution errors, and return safe, actionable messages.
- Separate read and write operations; require confirmation for destructive actions when the host experience supports it.
- Test expected business failures as well as malformed requests, authorization failures, and transport-level failures.
