Build the portfolio around the work, not around the animation. Keep project titles, descriptions, navigation, and contact details in the page itself; use WebGL to add visual depth and GSAP to choreograph a small number of transitions. That way, visitors can still understand and navigate the portfolio when motion is reduced or the canvas cannot render.
Start with the work and its route through the site
Give each project a clear identity in ordinary page content: a title, the medium or your role, a concise description, and a direct way to open or explore it. Keep navigation and contact information outside the canvas as well. These elements should not depend on a pointer gesture, a particular animation, or a successful WebGL render.

A persistent WebGL scene can create continuity as visitors move through a portfolio, while native page scrolling and direct project links keep navigation familiar. One portfolio case study describes this combination of a persistent Three.js scene, semantic content, native scrolling, GSAP transitions, and motion fallbacks. It is an example of an approach, not evidence that it outperforms other designs.
Choose a presentation pattern that suits the work

Choose based on how visitors need to encounter the work, how readily they need to reach a particular project, and what the medium gains from the interaction.

Use GSAP to choreograph meaningful transitions
GSAP timelines are useful when a sequence has a deliberate beginning, progression, and end. ScrollTrigger connects animation to page scrolling through trigger positions and timelines; its official documentation explains how to configure triggers and recommends using a timeline when coordinating multiple animations is appropriate.
- Define what each transition communicates: a change of project, a shift in visual focus, or a relationship between elements.
- Set trigger positions against the actual page layout, then check them as text wraps and viewport dimensions change.
- Keep project names, captions, and navigation readable rather than making every element animate for attention.
- Preserve ordinary scrolling and direct links so visitors are not forced through a sequence to reach a project.
Let the artwork determine the visual system
Scale, crop, whitespace, captions, color, and motion should serve the work’s medium and character. A large image may need room to be read; a sequence of works may call for clear separation; a more spatial presentation may make sense when depth is central to the work. The right choice depends on the artwork and audience, not on using the most technically elaborate effect available.

Do not assume that a portfolio is selling prints or needs print-production materials. Those decisions depend on the creator’s actual goals and are separate from how the portfolio presents the work.
Check WebGL compatibility and manage rendering deliberately
The current Three.js WebGLRenderer documentation states, “This renderer uses WebGL 2 to display scenes.” It also states, “WebGL 1 is not supported since r163.” Confirm that the Three.js version you choose and the browsers and devices you intend to support meet that requirement.

The renderer API provides controls including setPixelRatio, drawing-buffer sizing, setAnimationLoop, and dispose(). These can help you manage display resolution, render-loop ownership, and resource cleanup. They are implementation controls, not a universal performance budget. Test the finished experience on the devices you expect visitors to use; the available documentation does not establish a standard frame-rate, triangle-count, or GPU budget for a portfolio.
Make the experience usable without continuous motion or a working canvas
Provide a static or reduced-motion presentation, and keep essential project information and destinations available in semantic page content. A portfolio case study describes semantic fallback content and reduced-motion support, but that implementation is an example—not a substitute for checking the finished site.

- Make project links and navigation usable without pointer gestures or animated transitions.
- Ensure visitors can identify projects from their titles and descriptions even when the scene is absent.
- Check that reduced-motion behavior changes the experience in a useful way rather than merely removing essential content.
- Test the page with the canvas unavailable and with motion reduced, as well as in its full visual presentation.
