Build an AIOps agent as a controlled participant in incident response, not as an unrestricted operator. Connect detection, triage, diagnosis and mitigation through grounded evidence, deterministic action controls, meaningful human approval and a tested recovery path. Start with read-only investigation; grant limited execution rights only after the full workflow has been evaluated.
What the architecture needs to do
An AIOps agent should help move an incident from signal to safe resolution. That means linking four tasks—detection, triage, root cause analysis and mitigation—instead of treating AI-generated diagnosis as the whole system. The AIOpsLab paper describes this operational lifecycle and proposes an environment for designing and assessing agents in cloud microservice scenarios, including realistic fault injection; it does not establish a universal production resolution rate. The model can interpret signals, synthesize context and propose hypotheses. It should not decide by itself what is authorized to run. Keep identity, policy enforcement, parameter validation, approvals and emergency containment outside the model, in systems that can enforce those controls regardless of what the model says.
How to organize the architecture
Think of the system as an incident workflow surrounded by a control plane. Each layer has a defined job; the control plane applies across them rather than relying on a prompt to make the system safe.

Incident intake and operator interface
Accept alerts or an operator request, then present the incident status, evidence gathered, current hypothesis and proposed next step. The interface should also give an authorized person a clear way to approve or reject a plan, pause work and stop execution. Approval is not meaningful if the reviewer cannot see what will happen or cannot interrupt it.
Orchestration and bounded investigation
A coordinator can identify the task, retrieve relevant context, break investigation into bounded subtasks and check findings against explicit criteria. Separate investigators may examine telemetry, recent changes, dependencies or known failure patterns. Google Cloud documents a reference workflow using a coordinator and specialized agents, runbooks, artifacts and tool-mediated work; treat it as an architectural example, not a comparative test of platforms. Google Cloud Architecture Center
Keep subtasks narrow and return their evidence to the coordinator for evaluation. Multiple agents can help divide work, but they also add complexity and the possibility of unexpected interactions, as Microsoft’s risk guidance notes. Microsoft Learn: Reduce autonomous agentic AI risk
Evidence and operational knowledge
Ground the investigation in service topology, metrics, logs, traces, deployment and change history, prior incident reports and prescriptive runbooks. These sources answer different questions: telemetry shows what is happening, topology helps identify affected dependencies, change records provide a timeline, and runbooks describe established response procedures. AWS’s enterprise architecture guidance and Google Cloud’s workflow example both describe grounding agent work in operational context and knowledge. Preserve the source and timestamp of each observation. Make the agent distinguish observed facts from inferred explanations, include uncertainty and alternatives, and show which evidence supports each hypothesis. If evidence conflicts or is stale, the system should expose that condition instead of presenting a confident but unsupported cause.
Model access and tool gateway
Use models for interpretation, synthesis and proposing diagnostic hypotheses. Put policy, safety controls and cost management at the model-access boundary. Separately, expose only the operation-specific tools needed for each task through a gateway. The gateway should authorize the actor and context, validate parameters deterministically, and record each call and result. AWS’s enterprise architecture guidance describes these as architectural concerns; Microsoft’s guidance calls for minimum necessary tools, data and operations, with everything else denied by default. AWS Prescriptive Guidance · Microsoft Learn
Cross-cutting control plane
Apply identity management, least privilege, policy enforcement, observability, versioning, audit and emergency containment throughout the workflow. A model prompt may express intended behavior, but it is not an authorization boundary. Retrieved documents and tool output must be treated as data, not instructions: otherwise, malicious or misleading content could try to influence the agent’s behavior. Allowlisted tools and deterministic parameter checks help constrain that exposure. Microsoft Learn
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to move from diagnosis to safe remediation
Separate the agent’s proposal from the system’s permission to execute. A diagnosis should lead to a candidate action, not directly to a shell command or unrestricted API call.

- Detect and collect. Start from an incident alert or operator request and gather timestamped evidence from the permitted telemetry and service sources.
- Retrieve context. Find the applicable runbooks, service topology, change records and relevant prior incidents. Keep each source identifiable so an operator can inspect it.
- Form hypotheses. Present one or more possible causes with supporting observations, uncertainty and alternative explanations. Do not treat correlation or a model’s confidence as proof.
- Select an approved candidate action. Choose from a controlled remediation catalog. Do not turn free-form model text into an executable command.
- Check the action deterministically. Before execution, enforce the allowed operation, target, scope, parameters, blast radius and current system state. Reject actions outside policy rather than asking the model to self-certify them.
- Request approval when risk requires it. High-risk, ambiguous or irreversible actions need a meaningful human approval point. Show the planned operation, target, evidence, expected effect and relevant risk context. Microsoft explicitly recommends approval for high-risk or irreversible actions. Microsoft Learn
- Execute with constrained authority. If approved and policy checks pass, run through a narrowly scoped identity with only the required permissions.
- Verify and recover. Check service signals against explicit postconditions. If they fail, stop further action and use the defined rollback, safe mode or fallback procedure.
- Record the outcome. Make the evidence, decision, approval, tool calls, results and follow-up accessible in the incident record and audit logs.
Approval, interruption, rollback and fallback are operational controls, not interface niceties. AWS guidance calls for immediate shutdown capability, an emergency response process that can roll back, disable functionality or move to safe mode, continuity planning and recovery objectives. Operators also need a way to handle agent failure. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Incident response and business continuity for agentic AI systems
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate and roll out the agent
Evaluate the complete incident workflow, not just whether an explanation sounds plausible. AIOpsLab proposes an environment for designing and assessing agents across operational tasks and realistic faults; use that end-to-end framing rather than treating a benchmark or paper as proof of a particular production outcome. Microsoft Research, AIOpsLab
- Replay incidents offline. Use historical incidents and known failure cases to check whether the agent retrieves relevant evidence, identifies plausible causes and follows the intended workflow.
- Run live investigations read-only. Let the agent inspect permitted context while an operator checks evidence and hypotheses. It cannot change services in this stage.
- Offer recommendations for approval. Let the system propose catalog actions, but require explicit human approval before any execution.
- Automate narrow, reversible cases. Only after evaluation, allow a small set of low-impact actions under deterministic checks and post-action verification.
- Expand cautiously. Broaden scope only when measured performance, rollback exercises and incident reviews support the change. Keep a way to reduce permissions or return to a safer mode.
Choose evaluation measures before deployment and review them across the stages. Useful dimensions include diagnosis usefulness, evidence quality, tool-call correctness, policy violations, approval behavior, time to safe resolution, post-action regressions, rollback success and operating cost. These are proposed evaluation dimensions, not published results or a promised rate of autonomous resolution.
What to compare when choosing components
There is no universal best vendor or framework established by the cited guidance. Compare candidate systems against the operational and governance requirements of your environment, not only the quality of a generated summary.
- Operational context: coverage and freshness of metrics, logs, traces, changes and dependency data; quality and maintainability of topology, runbooks and incident history.
- Authority and boundaries: identity separation, tool authorization, deterministic parameter enforcement and the ability to deny unapproved operations.
- Human control: approval workflow quality, clarity of the action plan, and reliability of pause, stop and emergency shutdown controls.
- Recoverability: postcondition checks, rollback or safe mode, fallback operations, continuity procedures and explicit recovery objectives.
- Audit and evaluation: visibility into evidence and tool calls, ability to replay an investigation, and support for testing end-to-end tasks with realistic faults.
- Fit and operating burden: data governance, deployment constraints, integration effort and total operating cost.
