Building an Agentic Fraud Investigation Agent with TigerGraph, MCP, and GraphRAG

A practical architecture for connecting a fraud investigation agent to TigerGraph through MCP and retrieving graph-connected context with GraphRAG, with clear limits on what vendor materials establish.

A fraud investigation agent built around TigerGraph, MCP, and GraphRAG can retrieve connected account, transaction, device, and behavior evidence, then present it as an analyst-facing lead. The architecture is a design direction, not a validated deployment recipe: TigerGraph’s materials describe the relevant components and use case, but do not establish this exact system’s accuracy, false-positive rate, or operational results.

What is the role of a graph database in fraud investigations?

Fraud investigations often turn on relationships among records, not just the contents of an individual record. A transaction may look ordinary in isolation but merit review when its account connects to a device, another account, a sequence of transfers, or a prior incident. A graph represents those entities and events as vertices connected by edges, making those relationships available for retrieval and analysis.

TigerGraph describes fraud investigation agents as a way to analyze connected transactions, entities, and behavioral patterns. That is a vendor-stated use case, not independent evidence that a particular graph model will detect fraud or improve investigation outcomes.

Model entities and events as evidence

A practical starting model might include accounts, transactions, devices, and prior incidents. Define which identifiers link records and which relationships matter to investigators. Preserve provenance—such as the source record and relevant event time—so a retrieved connection can be checked against the underlying evidence rather than treated as an unexplained inference.

The schema should reflect the organization’s actual data and investigative questions. The examples above are illustrative, not a TigerGraph-provided schema for a production fraud system.

How do I connect TigerGraph to an MCP agent?

MCP is the connectivity layer in TigerGraph’s described stack. TigerGraph says its MCP Server can let an AI system build, retrieve from, and manage a TigerGraph database. The product description does not establish a particular tool contract, setup procedure, protocol compatibility, server release, or security configuration for this fraud workflow.

For an investigation agent, expose a deliberately limited set of approved operations rather than unrestricted database management. For example, an agent might be permitted to retrieve a case’s connected entities or run a reviewed investigative query, while writes and administrative actions remain unavailable unless there is a specific, authorized need. These are prudent design choices; the cited product material does not prescribe them.

Define the access boundary before enabling tools

  • Specify which cases and graph data the agent may access, and how a user’s authorization carries through each tool call.
  • Allow only reviewed operations with bounded inputs and outputs; do not assume MCP itself supplies the organization’s authorization policy.
  • Keep retrieval, data updates, and administrative capabilities distinct, and log the requests and evidence returned.
  • Verify the MCP server’s version, protocol support, deployment requirements, and security controls against current product documentation before implementation.

How can GraphRAG help detect fraud rings?

GraphRAG can use graph relationships to retrieve connected context for a question; hybrid retrieval can combine graph structure with vector search. TigerGraph presents graph processing, vector search, and enterprise context as parts of its agentic AI approach. In a fraud workflow, graph retrieval may help surface shared devices, linked accounts, or transaction paths, while vector retrieval can help find semantically relevant material. These are complementary retrieval signals, not proof that a ring exists.

A vector-only design may suit questions that primarily depend on semantic similarity. A graph-aware or hybrid approach is more relevant when an investigation depends on traversing relationships among entities and events. The trade-off is additional modeling and operational complexity, and retrieval still needs to be evaluated against the organization’s known cases.

Keep retrieved evidence distinct from conclusions

Return the connected records or paths that support a lead, along with identifiers and provenance that let an analyst verify them. The agent’s summary should distinguish observed facts—such as two accounts sharing a device—from a hypothesis, such as those accounts being controlled by the same person. A graph connection is evidence to investigate, not by itself a fraud determination.

What does GSQL contribute?

TigerGraph’s GSQL Language Reference 4.2 describes GSQL as a language for graph exploration and analysis. It says queries can combine retrieval and computation statements and can also update graph data. That makes GSQL relevant to defining graph operations, but the reference does not provide a complete query set or an implementation recipe for an MCP-connected fraud agent.

For an agent deployment, treat queries and updates as separately governed capabilities. Review queries for scope and cost, constrain the data they can return, and require explicit authorization for any operation that changes graph data.

How should you evaluate the investigation loop?

Before deployment, test the full path: evidence enters the graph, an authorized tool retrieves connected context, the agent produces a lead with traceable support, and an analyst reviews it. Evaluation should use representative labeled cases and measure the aspects that matter to the intended operation rather than relying on a compelling demonstration.

  • Detection quality and false positives on known cases.
  • Whether analysts can trace each generated claim to retrieved records or relationships.
  • Analyst workload and the usefulness of the presented context.
  • Retrieval latency and operational complexity at the expected scale.
  • Whether access controls and audit records work as intended.

The available TigerGraph materials do not independently validate accuracy, reduced false positives, faster investigations, or compliance outcomes for this specific TigerGraph, MCP, and GraphRAG architecture. Do not treat those benefits as established without deployment-specific evaluation.

What is established—and what remains implementation-specific?

TigerGraph’s Agentic AI page names its MCP Server, GraphRAG and hybrid retrieval, TigerGraph Database, solution kits, AI ecosystem integration, and TigerGraph Savanna. It identifies fraud investigation agents as an application for analyzing connected transactions, entities, and behavioral patterns. These statements describe TigerGraph’s product direction; they do not settle the choices required for a particular organization.

Before building, confirm the MCP server’s current compatibility and setup documentation, choose a schema and approved operations, define authorization and human-review boundaries, and test on representative cases. The official materials cited here do not specify those details for this fraud workflow.
