It can reduce provider-specific integration work and, depending on the gateway, centralize operational controls. It does not guarantee that every model supports the same features or behaves identically.
What is a unified inference API?
It is a shared request interface between an application and one or more model providers. Instead of embedding a separate provider integration throughout your codebase, you route model calls through a common API or gateway. “Unified inference API” describes an architectural approach, not one formal standard.

Implementations differ. Cloudflare AI Gateway documents a shared Cloudflare API for models hosted by Cloudflare and third parties, with universal and SDK-compatible endpoint forms. LiteLLM documents an OpenAI-format interface spanning many providers. These are examples of the approach, not interchangeable implementations.

A common interface can reduce the amount of provider-specific request and routing code your application needs. Depending on the product, the gateway may also provide operational controls: Cloudflare documents logging, caching, rate limiting and security features, while LiteLLM documents router retries and fallbacks. Those capabilities are product-specific, not inherent to every unified API.

The boundary is useful even if you build your own adapter: keep provider-specific request construction, credentials and error handling in one layer. Your application can then choose a model through configuration and route calls without scattering provider details across business logic.
Does one interface mean full model compatibility?
No. A shared request shape is not proof that each upstream model accepts the same parameters, returns equivalent results or supports the same capabilities. Cloudflare distinguishes its OpenAI-compatible unified requests from provider-specific endpoints used for native request formats and paths. The right endpoint can therefore depend on the upstream provider.

Before switching a production workload, verify the exact features it uses:
Recommended Free Tools
- Structured output and tool or function calling
- Streaming behavior and response format
- Image, audio, video or other multimodal inputs
- Context and output token limits
- Timeouts, error formats and rate-limit behavior
- Retry and fallback rules, including which failures trigger them
These are checks to perform, not claims that a particular feature is universally unsupported. Cloudflare’s custom-provider documentation illustrates that request formats vary by upstream; test your actual model, gateway configuration and request path.

- Single core ARM Cortex-A7 32-bit core, integrated with NEON and FPU
- Built in Micro's self-developed 4th generation NPU, with high computational accuracy and support for mixed quantization of int4, int8, and int16. Among them, int8 has a computing power of 0.5 TOPS and int4 has a computing power of up to 1.0 TOPS
- Built in self-developed 3rd generation ISP3.2, supports 4 million pixels, and supports various image enhancement and correction algorithms such as HDR, WDR, and multi-level denoisin
- It has powerful encoding performance, supports intelligent encoding, adapts to save bit rates according to the scene, and saves more than 50% of the bit rate compared to conventional CBR mode, making the captured images high-definition, smaller in size, and doubling the storage space
- The design with built-in RISC-V MCU supports low-power fast startup, 250ms fast capture, and simultaneous loading of AI model library, enabling facial recognition to be completed within 1 second
How do you switch models without rewriting your app?
- Put the gateway behind an application adapter. Give application code a small internal interface for model calls, and keep gateway-specific URLs, headers and payload handling inside that adapter.
- Make the model identifier configuration. Select the provider and model outside business logic, then validate the identifier against the gateway’s current supported set.
- Keep capability differences explicit. If a feature is available only on certain models, represent that in configuration or routing rules instead of assuming a model swap preserves behavior.
- Test the production request path. Exercise representative prompts and payloads, streaming, errors, timeouts, retries and fallbacks before changing traffic. Check both successful responses and failure behavior.
- Document the credential and billing path. Decide whether provider credentials are held by your application, the gateway or a billing intermediary; the right arrangement depends on configuration.
This design can reduce integration coupling, but it does not eliminate model or provider lock-in. Model-specific capabilities, performance, data policies and prices still need evaluation.

A managed service and a self-hosted gateway shift different responsibilities. Cloudflare AI Gateway is an example of a managed option with documented unified access and gateway controls. LiteLLM is an example of a self-hosted/unified-library approach whose documentation describes an OpenAI-format interface and router behavior. Neither is automatically the better fit; compare them against your operating constraints.

What should you know about Cloudflare Unified Billing?
Cloudflare’s Unified Billing documentation, last updated September 30, 2026, says credits purchased through the feature incur a 5% fee: its example turns a $100 credit purchase into a $105 charge. The same documentation says provider inference prices are passed through without markup. These are distinct charges, and the fee is a commercial term that can change; check the current terms before enabling the feature. Cloudflare’s REST API documentation also describes calling Cloudflare-hosted and third-party models through its API, but the exact credential and billing flow depends on configuration.
How to evaluate a gateway before adopting it
Use a proof of concept built around your real workload, not just a successful sample request. Record which provider and model each test uses, the endpoint format, required parameters, response behavior and resulting errors. Then compare the results against your application’s requirements and review operational and billing terms.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes its OpenAI-compatible unified path as suited to OpenAI-compatible providers and its provider-specific endpoint as supporting native request structures and paths. That distinction is a practical reminder: a gateway can provide a common front door while still requiring provider-aware choices behind it.
