You can design a remote desktop so screen media and control messages travel directly between two computers when their networks permit it. WebRTC does not guarantee that path: peers still need a separate signaling channel to set up a connection, and ICE may use STUN or a TURN relay when a direct route is unavailable. “Zero-middleman” is therefore an architectural goal for live traffic, not a promise that every session avoids servers.
A practical design pairs WebRTC transport with platform-specific capture and input integration. Windows Desktop Duplication and the Linux XDG Desktop Portal provide documented building blocks, but they do not make the application’s signaling, input protocol, permissions, or security policy for it.

What “zero-middleman” can—and cannot—mean
Separate the connection’s setup path from its live data path. A signaling service helps the two peers find each other and exchange connection information. After setup, WebRTC attempts to establish a direct path for media and application data. If network conditions prevent that, ICE can use a relay. The application can aim to keep its own servers out of the live path, but cannot guarantee that every session will be direct.

Signaling is still required
WebRTC does not specify signaling. In a typical exchange, one peer creates a Session Description Protocol (SDP) offer, sends it to the other peer through an application-defined channel, and receives an SDP answer in return. The peers also exchange ICE candidates—the possible network routes they have discovered—over that signaling channel. The WebRTC project’s getting-started guide describes HTTP-based APIs as one common approach, not a required signaling protocol.

The signaling service can be limited to coordinating setup rather than carrying the desktop stream. It still has an important security role: the application must decide how peers are identified and how to prevent an unintended person from joining a session. WebRTC does not supply that application-specific identity and authorization policy.
Direct paths are conditional
ICE evaluates candidate routes. STUN can help a peer discover how it is reachable from outside its local network; it does not relay the desktop stream. When direct connectivity is unavailable, TURN can relay encrypted WebRTC traffic. That makes TURN a deliberate availability trade-off: it can enable sessions that otherwise would not connect, but those sessions do pass through relay infrastructure.
Trickle ICE lets a peer send candidates as they are discovered instead of waiting for the full set to finish gathering. The WebRTC guide recommends it as a way to reduce setup delay; that is protocol guidance, not a measured latency result for a particular remote-desktop application.

How to divide the live screen and control paths
Use WebRTC media for the screen and consider an RTCDataChannel for application-defined control messages. The choice keeps two different kinds of traffic conceptually distinct: a stream of changing visual frames and small events such as pointer movement, clicks, or key presses. WebRTC supports both media and arbitrary application data, but it does not prescribe a complete remote-desktop protocol.

Screen media
The capture and encoding pipeline turns desktop updates into a media stream sent over the peer connection. The cited platform documentation describes capture capabilities, not a particular codec, resolution, frame rate, bandwidth requirement, congestion policy, or latency target for this design. Choose and validate those against the target operating systems, hardware, and network conditions rather than presenting them as guaranteed WebRTC properties.
Input messages
An RTCDataChannel can carry a compact, application-defined representation of input events. The message format must specify what events are supported and how the receiving endpoint validates them. For example, pointer position and button state are different data from a key press; the application must define their encoding and handling. Do not assume that opening a data channel automatically provides keyboard mapping, clipboard sharing, or device redirection.
WebRTC data channels are encrypted using DTLS. Encryption protects transport traffic, but it does not decide who may control the desktop, whether the local user has consented, or which actions a remote peer is authorized to perform. Those are application responsibilities.

Keep control responsive
MDN’s data-channel guidance documents outbound buffering and warns that large messages can cause head-of-line blocking when message interleaving is unavailable. Avoid putting bulk transfers ahead of time-sensitive control events on the same channel without considering their effect. Keep messages appropriately sized, monitor the channel’s buffered amount, and define how the sender behaves when the connection cannot drain data quickly enough. These are design safeguards, not a guarantee of a particular response time.

Capture and input integration depend on the operating system
WebRTC transports media and data; it does not capture a desktop or inject local input on its own. The native integration supplies those platform-specific capabilities, and its behavior and permissions need to be handled for each supported environment.
Windows: Desktop Duplication API
Microsoft’s Desktop Duplication API exposes desktop images in DXGI surfaces and provides update metadata, including dirty regions, moved regions, and pointer information. An application can use that metadata to process changed areas rather than treating each captured frame as an undifferentiated full-screen update. The API also permits GPU processing for handling or compression.
Application logic is still needed for details such as monitor rotation, multiple monitors, and pointer drawing. Desktop Duplication provides a capture path; it does not define the WebRTC media pipeline, remote-input message format, or the application’s authorization policy. Microsoft’s documentation page was last updated January 6, 2021, so check current guidance for the Windows versions you intend to support.
Linux: XDG Desktop Portal RemoteDesktop
The XDG Desktop Portal RemoteDesktop API documents a session that can combine screen casting and remote input. It identifies EIS as the recommended input method and D-Bus Notify* calls as another route. This is a documented portal-based integration path, not evidence that every Linux desktop environment exposes identical permissions, prompts, or behavior. Test the environments you plan to support and handle the portal’s session and permission flow explicitly.

Do not assume platform parity
The cited platform material establishes Windows and Linux paths; it does not establish a macOS capture implementation or verify permission prompts and low-level input behavior across operating-system releases. Treat each supported platform as a separate integration and validation task rather than promising one native API works everywhere.
Keep the native WebRTC pipeline responsive
The native WebRTC documentation says API calls are proxied to a signaling thread and callbacks run on that thread. It advises moving resource-intensive processing elsewhere. A capture, encode, and send pipeline should therefore avoid performing expensive work synchronously inside callbacks; hand work to suitable worker threads and keep thread ownership and lifetime management explicit.
This separation matters because capture, image processing, and encoding can consume substantial resources. A callback blocked doing that work can delay other signaling-thread activity. The documentation describes the threading constraint, but does not prescribe a complete scheduling model for this application.

A usable remote desktop needs more than an encrypted transport. Decide how a session is authenticated, how the local user grants and revokes control, and what permissions the remote peer receives. Keep the policy narrow enough that a screen-sharing session does not silently become unrestricted control. The available WebRTC and OS API descriptions do not establish these application-level protections automatically.

- Signaling unavailable: peers cannot exchange setup information through that channel, even if a direct network route could otherwise exist.
- No usable direct route: a session may require TURN relay service; decide whether relay is supported, required, or disallowed, and communicate the consequence to users.
- Capture or portal permission denied: the application cannot assume it has a screen or input path; provide a clear failure state rather than treating the peer connection as proof that desktop access works.
- Slow or interrupted data channel: account for buffering and reconnection behavior, and avoid letting queued nonessential data delay control messages.
- Multiple monitors or changed display state: verify how the capture layer represents displays, rotation, pointer state, and changes while a session is active.

How this differs from RDP and deployed remote access
Microsoft describes Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) as a remote display and input protocol with features including virtual channels, mouse and keyboard redirection, clipboard mapping, and printer redirection. These are useful comparison points when defining the scope of a custom WebRTC client: screen and input transport alone do not imply the broader device and session features associated with a remote-desktop protocol. Microsoft’s overview page was last updated August 19, 2020, and it does not provide a current head-to-head performance comparison with this design.
Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop network guide illustrates why setup and transport should be described separately: it documents initial negotiation through Google services followed by direct, STUN, or TURN/relay modes, with its TURN mode relaying packets through Google data centers. That is evidence about that product’s documented network design, not a rule for every WebRTC application.

A sensible implementation sequence
- Choose the supported platforms and native APIs. Define capture and input integration separately for each operating system; the documented examples here are Windows Desktop Duplication and Linux XDG Desktop Portal RemoteDesktop.
- Define session identity and consent. Specify how a peer is identified, how a local user authorizes control, and how authorization is revoked before connecting transport to native input.
- Build signaling. Exchange SDP offers and answers and ICE candidates through an application channel. Decide whether to use trickle ICE and how the application will report setup failures.
- Choose an ICE deployment policy. Decide whether to provide STUN discovery and TURN relay, and whether the application permits sessions that require relay. Do not describe a relay-capable system as guaranteed direct.
- Establish media and control paths. Send screen media over the peer connection and define an application-level input protocol for an RTCDataChannel if that division suits the product.
- Respect buffering and threading constraints. Keep resource-intensive work off WebRTC callbacks, size data-channel messages deliberately, and account for queued outbound data.
- Validate the whole session. Test permission denial, multiple displays, network restrictions, relay use, slow links, session revocation, and behavior on each supported OS. Measure performance rather than assuming it from the transport choice.
