Building a TickTick Extension for Visual Studio: What to Verify Before You Start

A practical Visual Studio extension starting point, with five TickTick API questions to verify rather than assume.

You can build a Windows Visual Studio extension that connects to TickTick, but the five API surprises in this title cannot be responsibly stated as facts without current, accessible TickTick documentation or reproducible tests. The practical starting point is to choose the right Visual Studio extension type, create a VSIX, and verify TickTick’s API contract before implementing authentication or synchronization.

First, separate Visual Studio from Visual Studio Code

This guide concerns Visual Studio on Windows, not Visual Studio Code. They are different products with different extension systems. Microsoft’s extension-development guidance requires Visual Studio and the Visual Studio SDK; the SDK can be installed with Visual Studio or added afterward.

Choose the extension shape for the job

Microsoft describes two broad approaches. A VSPackage is generally the fit for commands, tool windows, or project-related functionality. A MEF extension is generally used to customize the editor. For a TickTick integration, the choice depends on how developers should interact with their tasks:

  • Command or tool window: Use the VSPackage route if users should invoke a command or work with TickTick in a dedicated Visual Studio window.
  • Editor customization: Consider MEF if the feature changes or augments the code editor itself.

For C# and Visual Basic, the Visual Studio SDK includes an empty VSIX project template, plus item templates for menu commands, tool windows, and editor extensions. Start with the smallest template that matches the intended interaction rather than building a full integration surface before the API is understood.

Create and distribute a VSIX

  1. Install Visual Studio on Windows and ensure the Visual Studio SDK is available.
  2. Create an empty VSIX project for C# or Visual Basic, then add the appropriate command, tool-window, or editor-extension item template.
  3. Implement and test the Visual Studio feature independently of TickTick while the external API contract is being verified.
  4. Package the extension as a VSIX. Microsoft says users can install a VSIX file by double-clicking it or developers can publish the extension to the Visual Studio Marketplace.

What is—and is not—known about TickTick’s API

The official TickTick developer documentation URL, https://developer.ticktick.com/docs#/openapi, returned a 404 when checked on October 4, 2026. That access failure does not prove the API or its documentation has been discontinued; it means the current official contract could not be verified from that page.

A third-party npm search result for @ticktick/ticktick-cli says the package wraps “TickTick Open API v1.” Its snippet describes creating a token in TickTick Web under Settings > Account > API Token and calls OAuth browser login recommended. Those are unverified third-party package claims, not a confirmed current TickTick specification. Treat them as leads to check, not as implementation requirements.

Five API questions to verify before coding

Rather than treating unverified behavior as five established surprises, make these the five checks in your integration plan. Record the documentation or reproducible test supporting each answer.

  1. Authentication: Confirm the currently supported authorization flow, where credentials are created, what scopes or permissions apply, and how credentials are securely stored and removed. The third-party token and OAuth descriptions above do not establish TickTick’s current official behavior.
  2. Endpoints and supported objects: Identify the authoritative endpoints and whether the integration can access the lists, tasks, and other objects it needs. Do not infer a complete endpoint list from a package label such as “Open API v1.”
  3. Field semantics: Verify which task and list fields can be read or written, including how optional, absent, or unsupported fields behave. The available evidence does not establish a current field schema.
  4. Pagination and limits: Check how results are paginated and whether request or rate limits apply. No verified pagination rules or limits are established here.
  5. Token lifecycle and synchronization: Determine expiry and revocation behavior, then test how changes made in TickTick and Visual Studio are reconciled. Current authoritative evidence does not establish token lifecycle rules, server geography, or synchronization quirks.

For any observed behavior, record the date, account or environment conditions, request and response details with secrets removed, and whether the observation was repeated. Label a one-off observation as such; do not present it as a general API guarantee.

Check Visual Studio compatibility separately

Microsoft’s October 21, 2025 guidance describes a Visual Studio 2026 compatibility model that checks extension API versions at load time. It says Visual Studio 2026 supports API version 17.x and gives [17.0, 18.0) as an existing installation target that can remain unchanged for compatibility; new targets may use [17.0,). The guidance applies to VSIX-based extensions, recommends testing on Visual Studio 2026, and recommends VSIX distribution rather than MSI installers. Compatibility targeting is not a guarantee that every extension behaves correctly, so test the extension in the Visual Studio versions you intend to support.

Build only against a verified contract

The Visual Studio extension foundation is documented; the current TickTick API details and the title’s five specific surprises are not established by the available authoritative evidence. Begin with the VSIX and interaction model, then implement the TickTick connection only after confirming the API’s current authentication, endpoints, fields, limits, and synchronization behavior from official documentation or clearly recorded tests.
