A simple online counter is a number, two buttons, and a few lines of JavaScript that change the number and redraw it. Building one takes an afternoon. Deciding whether it is useful takes more thought, because the counter only helps if its behavior matches what the person using it is trying to do: keep a personal tally, show a public total, or track something that must not be lost by accident.
What a minimal counter needs
A working counter has three parts. A current-state value holds the number. A display shows it. Controls change the value, and code redraws the display after each change. A guide on building a counter in HTML and JavaScript, published by Simple Online Counter on 6 September 2026, puts the requirement this way: a working counter needs an element to display the number, two buttons, and a variable the buttons change. The same basic structure appears in educational examples that place HTML, CSS, and JavaScript together in one self-contained page. CSS handles appearance; the behavior lives in the script.

The smallest version looks like this:
<span id="value" aria-live="polite">0</span>
<button type="button" id="dec" aria-label="Decrease by one">-</button>
<button type="button" id="inc" aria-label="Increase by one">+</button>
<script>
let count = 0;
const value = document.getElementById("value");
function render() {
value.textContent = count;
}
document.getElementById("inc").addEventListener("click", () => {
count += 1;
render();
});
document.getElementById("dec").addEventListener("click", () => {
count -= 1;
render();
});
</script>
This version works, but it forgets everything on reload, has no safeguards, and is usable only with a mouse. The rest of this article covers what to add and why.
Decide who the count belongs to first
Before you choose any storage, decide whether the count is personal or shared. These call for different architectures, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion.

Browser storage, such as localStorage, can keep a value between page visits on the same device and in the same browser. That value is still subject to browser settings, private browsing modes, and whether storage is available at all. It does not produce a site-wide total. Every visitor gets their own copy.
A visitor counter that shows one total to everyone needs state kept somewhere all visitors can reach, which means a server or a hosted service. Amazon Web Services publishes a beginner project that separates the static frontend from the backend that stores and increments the visitor count, a useful way to see the two layers apart.
| Question | Personal counter (browser storage) | Shared visitor counter (server or hosted service) |
|---|---|---|
| Whose total is shown? | Only the current browser or device | The same total for every visitor |
| Where does the value live? | In the browser on the user’s device | On a server or in a hosted service |
| Does it need a backend? | No | Yes, a server or hosted service that stores and updates the count |
| What can break it? | Storage being blocked, cleared, or unavailable | The service being unreachable, plus the same storage-availability issues on the client side |
| Typical use | Personal tallies, practice counters, reps or rounds | Page-view totals or public counters shown to readers |
If the answer to “whose number is this?” is “mine, on this device,” stay in the browser. If it is “everyone’s,” plan for a backend from the start rather than trying to retrofit one later.

Make every control say what it does
A button with a symbol may be clear to a sighted mouse user and ambiguous to everyone else. Use real <button> elements rather than clickable <div> elements so keyboard focus and activation work by default. Set type="button" on every button that is not meant to submit a form. Without it, a button inside a form can trigger a submission, which will reload or navigate the page and wipe the counter’s state.
Where a symbol alone does not describe the action, add an aria-label such as “Increase by one.” Screen readers announce the label, so the button communicates its purpose without the user needing to infer it from a plus or minus sign.
Validate input and guard storage
Two failure modes show up in almost every counter that accepts configuration or saves its value. Both are predictable, and both are easy to handle.

Invalid numbers produce NaN
If you let a user set a custom step size, the value they type is a string. Converting an empty or malformed entry with Number() can return NaN, and once NaN enters the count, every later addition keeps it as NaN. The guide that this article draws on names this as a common beginner problem. Check the value before using it:

if (Number.isFinite(raw) && raw > 0) {
step = raw;
} else {
stepMessage.textContent = "Enter a step greater than zero. Keeping " + step + ".";
}
The same check should run when restoring a saved value, since a corrupted stored string can carry the same problem into the page.
Storage can throw
Some browser configurations block access to localStorage and throw an error when code touches it, which can stop the script before the buttons are wired up. Wrap reads and writes in try...catch and fall back to an in-memory value:

- Counts up or down from 0 to 9999 with tactile + and – buttons, uniquely shaped and sized so you can tell them apart easily by touch—ensuring you never press the wrong one
- Start from 0 or any preset number, and reset to 0 instantly at any time for quick and easy use
- Turn the sounds on and off by holding the black center button for 3 seconds
- Power On/Off and Auto Sleep functions optimize energy use, extending battery life for longer-lasting performance
- Light weight, easy to use, perfect for sport event, casino, bar, swimming, running laps, concert, coach, restaurant, school, exercise and any occasions where need to be counted for number
function loadCount() {
try {
const saved = Number(localStorage.getItem("counter"));
return Number.isFinite(saved) ? saved : 0;
} catch (error) {
return 0;
}
}
function saveCount(n) {
try {
localStorage.setItem("counter", String(n));
} catch (error) {
// Storage is unavailable; the count still works for this page view.
}
}
Note that Number(null) returns 0, so an empty stored value is handled, but only because the code checks the result. Persistence should degrade gracefully rather than break the interface.
Protect against accidental presses
A counter with no undo is fine when a mistake costs nothing. When the count represents something that took effort to build, such as a tally of repetitions or items, an accidental press can ruin it. The guide recommends keeping an undo history: push each previous value onto an array before changing it, and pop the last entry to undo. It advises against a single-tap reset that wipes the total immediately. These are the guide’s recommendations for usability, not findings from measured user testing, so treat them as design guidance to adapt.
If you include a reset, make it harder to trigger than the increment button. A confirmation step or a reset that sits apart from the main controls is a reasonable choice.

Keyboard support, without stealing keys
Keyboard operation is worth adding because many people use a counter without a mouse, and the buttons alone may not meet that need. A common pattern is to listen for + and - on the document. The important limit is that a counter should not capture keystrokes while the user is typing in a text field, such as a step-size input. Check the event target before acting:
document.addEventListener("keydown", (event) => {
const tag = event.target.tagName;
if (tag === "INPUT" || tag === "TEXTAREA" || event.target.isContentEditable) return;
if (event.key === "+") { count += step; render(); }
if (event.key === "-") { count -= step; render(); }
});
Without that check, a user typing “-5” into a step field would decrease the count on every hyphen.
Announce changes at a usable pace
The display sits inside a live region, so a screen reader announces the new number when it changes. For manual clicks this is usually fine. For a timed counter that increments many times a second, repeated announcements become noise and can make the interface unusable. MDN’s accessibility documentation makes the broader point that dynamic content can be especially difficult for people who cannot see the screen, so the update behavior is part of the design, not an afterthought.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a counter that runs automatically, a practical approach is to turn off the live region while the count is running and announce the final total once it stops. The Simple Online Counter guide suggests this pattern. Test it with an actual screen reader before relying on it, since behavior varies between screen readers and browsers.
A checklist before you publish
- Confirm whether the count is personal or shared, and build storage to match.
- Use
<button>elements withtype="button"and anaria-labelwherever the symbol alone is unclear. - Validate any step size with
Number.isFiniteand a positive-value check, and rejectNaNbefore it reaches the count. - Wrap every
localStoragecall intry...catchand keep the counter working when storage is unavailable. - Provide undo, and make reset deliberate rather than one tap.
- Ignore keystrokes while a text field has focus.
- Limit live announcements during automatic counting, and announce the final total.
- Test with keyboard only and with a screen reader, not just a mouse.
A counter that passes this list is not complicated, but it behaves the way its user expects, which is the real measure of a small web tool.
”
The Bottom Line
A simple counter is useful when its scope is clear: personal counts belong in browser storage with safeguards, and shared totals need a backend. Get the controls, validation, and storage fallbacks right, and the small tool serves its reader instead of frustrating them.
