A practical route into DevOps is to learn how to build, deliver, secure, and operate software before specializing in cloud-native systems or platform engineering. Start from what you already know, fill the gaps that matter to a real project, and prove each stage with a working system—not just familiarity with tools.
What to learn first
DevOps is a combination of engineering capabilities and collaborative practices, not a single job title or a required list of products. DORA’s capability map spans technical, process, and cultural areas, including version control, maintainable code, automated testing, database change management, cloud infrastructure, continuous delivery, and observability. It does not prescribe one universal sequence.

Use the stages below as a route through the work. If you already have experience in software development, systems administration, networking, or cloud operations, assess your gaps and move to the stage that addresses them. Deepen earlier skills when a project exposes a weakness rather than repeating material you can already apply.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStage 1: Build engineering and systems fundamentals
Learn enough to understand the whole service
- Write and read code, and use scripting to automate routine work.
- Use version control to track changes and collaborate.
- Work comfortably in a command line and understand operating-system processes and files.
- Learn networking basics, how services communicate, and how applications use data stores.
- Write basic tests and identify dependencies, errors, and likely failure modes.
Build a small service or useful script and keep it in version control. Include a README that explains what it does, its dependencies, how to set it up locally, and how to run its tests. The project is a practical checkpoint derived from DORA’s capabilities, not a formal DORA or CNCF requirement.

Stage 2: Make software delivery repeatable
Automate the path from change to deployment
Take that project through a consistent sequence: review a change, run automated checks, create a deployable artifact, deploy it through a controlled path, observe the result, and recover if something breaks. Learn the underlying practices—continuous integration, continuous delivery, test and deployment automation, small batches, and trunk-based development—before treating any particular pipeline syntax as the skill itself. These are among the capabilities DORA describes.
Your checkpoint is a project that can be built and deployed consistently, with automated checks and a documented rollback or recovery procedure. Be able to explain what each check catches, what must be true before deployment, and how you would respond to a failed release.
Stage 3: Automate infrastructure and operate the service
Connect deployment to security and reliability
Once you can follow an application’s build and deployment lifecycle, add cloud infrastructure and infrastructure automation. Learn identity and access, secrets handling, configuration, and software supply-chain awareness alongside the infrastructure—not as afterthoughts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThen add monitoring and observability, incident response, and reliability objectives appropriate to the service. Monitoring provides signals about conditions you have chosen to watch; observability is the broader work of using system evidence to understand and debug behavior, including behavior you did not anticipate.
Operate the service you built. Create a dashboard or another useful view of its health, describe how you would detect and diagnose a failure, and practice a safe recovery. A useful exercise includes a failure scenario, the signals that help locate it, and a recovery procedure that avoids making the incident worse. DORA’s capability collection includes cloud infrastructure, monitoring and observability, and shifting security left.
Stage 4: Add cloud-native and Kubernetes skills when they fit your goal
If your target work involves cloud-native infrastructure, progress to containers and Kubernetes concepts. Study APIs, deployment patterns, networking, storage, security, and operational troubleshooting. Learn how the components behave and how to investigate a failure, not only how to apply a configuration.
The CNCF open curriculum repository covers areas including Kubernetes, GitOps, security, observability, and platform engineering. Use it to choose suitable depth or to understand the topic map behind a credential. A syllabus can organize study, but demonstrate competence by building, deploying, debugging, and operating a working system.
Stage 5: Learn to design platforms for developers
Think in reusable capabilities, not a tool collection
Platform engineering means building reusable, secure, observable capabilities that make it easier for application teams to deliver software. CNCF’s Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer (CNPE) domains provide a map of the work: platform engineering fundamentals; observability, security, and conformance; continuous delivery; platform APIs and infrastructure provisioning; internal developer platforms and developer experience; and measurement.
Related platform practices and patterns include Kubernetes automation, self-service, operator patterns, developer portals, service catalogs, and DORA metrics. A platform may use some of these, but no single tool or implementation is required by the learning path.

Build a platform capstone
Design one safe, repeatable route for a developer to create or deploy a service. The route should have documented APIs or templates, policy checks, operational signals, and a way to collect developer feedback. Start with one well-defined workflow, then improve it based on where users encounter friction. This is a suggested project design based on published platform domains, not an official certification checklist.
Choose a learning resource that matches the gap
Different resources serve different purposes. A broad capability map helps identify what to learn; a curriculum gives a structured topic sequence; a course or credential can add instruction or assessment. Whichever you choose, check whether it requires you to build and troubleshoot something, and whether its implementation details match your intended environment.

| CNCF open curricula | Curricula across areas including Kubernetes, GitOps, security, observability, and platform engineering. | Choosing a structured topic map or preparing for cloud-native study. |
| CNPA | Foundational, vendor-neutral platform engineering credential; online proctored multiple-choice exam. | Checking foundational knowledge against a defined platform engineering syllabus. |
| CNPE | Advanced credential for experienced practitioners; 120-minute online proctored performance-based exam with terminal and web-based tasks. | Practitioners ready to demonstrate applied platform engineering skills. |
| Google Cloud Partners DevOps Engineer, SRE path | Google Cloud-specific path described as 14 activities of on-demand courses, labs, and skill badges; managed by Google Cloud Partners. | Learners targeting Google Cloud workflows who want a course-and-lab sequence. |
| Google SRE books | Online reading on site reliability engineering; Google also lists a second edition of Site Reliability Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems, published by O’Reilly on September 30, 2026, at 750 pages. | Optional reading to deepen the reliability and operations stage; practical labs remain important. |
Decide whether a certification is worth it
A credential is most useful when its syllabus fills a learning gap, its assessment fits your goal, and its hands-on expectations are clear. Compare scope, level, portability, and cost; do not treat an exam blueprint as a measure of which skills employers value most. CNCF describes CNPA as vendor-neutral, while the Google Cloud path is explicitly tied to Google Cloud technologies.

| Credential | Published assessment and price | CNPA exam blueprint weights |
|---|---|---|
| CNPA | Online proctored multiple-choice exam; CNCF listed $250 with one free retake on its certification page accessed in 2026. Fees and terms may change. | Platform Engineering Core Fundamentals: 36%; Platform Observability, Security, and Conformance: 20%; Continuous Delivery & Platform Engineering: 16%; Platform APIs and Provisioning Infrastructure: 12%; IDPs and Developer Experience: 8%; Measuring your Platform: 8%. |
| CNPE | 120-minute online proctored performance-based exam; CNCF listed $445 with one free retake on its certification page accessed in 2026. Fees and terms may change. | Not stated on the cited CNPE page. |
The CNPA percentages describe that exam’s blueprint, not the prevalence or importance of skills across the labor market. CNCF positions CNPA as foundational and CNPE as advanced, hands-on platform engineering; neither credential is a prerequisite to working in the field. Google Cloud Partners describes its path as courses, labs, and skill badges, but the page’s activity list and availability can change; check the current listing before relying on it. Google also provides online access to SRE books, so the optional reference need not be a purchase.
Use projects to find the next gap
Keep a portfolio that shows how a system changes and operates, rather than a collection of tool names. At each stage, ask whether another person could reproduce your work and whether you can explain what happens when it fails.
- Foundations: Can someone set up the project, understand its dependencies, and run its tests from your documentation?
- Delivery: Does a change pass automated checks and follow a repeatable deployment and recovery path?
- Operations: Can you identify a failure from useful signals, investigate its cause, and recover safely?
- Platform: Can a developer use a documented, policy-aware self-service route and give feedback about it?
These checkpoints are practical recommendations synthesized from DORA capabilities and CNCF platform domains; they are not official exam requirements or a guarantee of a job. Adjust the depth and order to your experience and the systems you want to work on.
