Computer vision can locate and straighten the card, measure centering, and flag possible flaws; explicit grading logic can turn those findings into a transparent preliminary estimate. The result is not an official PSA, CGC, or BGS grade, and photos cannot establish that a card is genuine.
What a photo-based card grader can—and cannot—tell you
Professional grading considers several aspects of a card, including centering, scratches, dents, paper condition, and print quality. A grader may also exercise judgment about overall eye appeal. A camera-based tool sees only what its images reveal, so its proper output is an evidence-backed condition estimate, not a professional service result.
Authentication and condition are separate questions. PSA describes authentication as verifying originality or genuineness, while grading assesses quality and condition. A visual condition estimate does not prove authenticity. See PSA’s Getting Started With Grading.
That distinction should be visible in the product itself: label the output “preliminary photo-based estimate,” show the observations behind it, and avoid language or badges that could be mistaken for an official grade or authentication result.

Build the estimate from an auditable image pipeline
A useful system processes the front and back as images, keeps intermediate measurements, and only scores features it can support. PSA organizes grader notes around corners, edges, surface, and centering; those categories make a practical framework for presenting evidence. Its FAQ also describes a card scanner and research features, showing that phone scanning is part of a real card workflow—not that a scan assigns an official grade.
- Capture both sides. Request clear, uncropped images of the front and back. A steady phone mount may make repeat captures easier, but it is not a grading tool and is not shown to improve grading accuracy.
- Find the card boundary. Detect the card’s four edges or corners and report whether the boundary was confidently located. Sleeves, busy backgrounds, cropped corners, and low contrast can interfere.
- Rectify perspective. Transform the detected quadrilateral into a front-facing rectangular view. Preserve the original image and the transformation so users can inspect what the system measured.
- Measure centering. Estimate the widths of opposing borders on the front and reverse, then report the measurements and method. Do not collapse this measurement into a whole-card grade.
- Inspect likely defect regions. Look separately for candidate corner, edge, and surface issues. Attach each flag to a location or image crop and describe it as a candidate, not a confirmed defect, when the image does not support certainty.
- Apply a published, configurable rule. Combine only supported measurements and detections using explicit logic. Keep the rule versioned and explain which observations affected the estimate.
Each stage should be allowed to abstain. If glare, blur, sleeve reflections, cropping, or perspective makes a region unreliable, mark it “insufficient image evidence” and request a better image rather than treating missing visibility as a clean surface.

Measure centering without mistaking it for the grade
Centering is measurable from borders in an image, but it is only one part of condition. PSA’s published PSA 10 reference is approximately 55/45 centering on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. PSA also says grader discretion may allow a small variance based on overall eye appeal. These are PSA-specific references, not universal industry thresholds or a complete grade algorithm; keep them labeled and configurable. The source is PSA’s grading standards.
For a border pair, a tool can report the measured ratio alongside its image and boundary confidence—for example, “left:right border estimate, front; boundary confidence: high.” The ratio must remain a measurement, not a claim that the card meets all PSA 10 conditions. A centering-only service makes a similar limitation clear: VAN GRADE says its result is a centering reference, not an official grade or guarantee, and notes that professional grading also evaluates corners, edges, and surface. Keep the LLM out of score selection
If an LLM is used, give it the computer-vision findings and ask it to explain them in plain language. Do not ask it to infer a grade directly from the photograph or to change the score. The scoring engine should own the rule; the language model should describe its inputs and limits.
- Computer vision supplies observations: card boundary, border measurements, candidate defects, image quality, and confidence.
- Deterministic grading logic applies the rule: it uses supported observations and named thresholds to produce an estimate or declines to score.
- The explanation layer communicates: it summarizes the evidence, points to annotated regions, and distinguishes a detected feature from an uncertain one.
This separation makes an estimate reviewable: a user can see whether the result followed from a measured border, a flagged corner, or a rule choice, instead of trusting an opaque model-generated number.

Show uncertainty and limits as part of the result
Confidence should attach to individual observations, not merely appear as one reassuring score-wide percentage. A card may have clear borders but a reflective surface, for example. A useful result makes that uneven evidence legible and gives the user a next action.
- Show front and back measurements separately, with annotated borders or candidate-defect regions.
- Identify glare, blur, reflections, cropping, or perspective problems that affect a specific region.
- Ask for a retake or return “insufficient image evidence” when the relevant feature cannot be assessed.
- State that the output estimates visible condition from submitted images and does not authenticate the card or replace professional grading.
These are design recommendations based on published grading factors and the image limitations identified by centering-tool vendors, not experimentally validated performance claims. Vendor descriptions of computer-vision approaches—including AGS’s description of separating images into edges, corners, and surface—are examples of product approaches, not proof of independent accuracy. Why PSA grade distributions are not a shortcut to scoring
PSA’s current, undated Getting Started With Grading page reports approximate population-level distributions: 90% of Ultra-Modern Sport cards (2017-present) and Modern trading card games (2003-present) graded PSA 8 or higher; 80% of Modern Sport cards (1986-2016) graded PSA 8 or higher; and 80% of Vintage TCG cards (pre-2003) graded PSA 7 or higher. PSA also says it has graded tens of millions of cards since 2018. These are PSA-reported figures, not predictions for an individual card: PSA says it grades cards individually rather than according to those statistics. Using them as a model prior would require accounting for selection bias and whether the card belongs to the relevant population. The figures and qualification appear on PSA’s page.
