Building a Multi-Year Battery-Powered Cellular Data Logger

A multi-year cellular logger needs a measured workload budget, a battery that can handle radio pulses, and validation on the intended network and hardware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A battery-powered cellular logger can run for years, but only if its complete workload fits both the battery’s usable energy budget and the modem’s peak-current demands. Build the estimate from measured events—sensing, processing, network registration, data transfer, retries and sleep—not from a modem’s advertised sleep current or battery capacity alone.

What must the logger do, and how quickly must it respond?

Set the operating requirements before selecting a modem or battery. These determine how often the device wakes, whether it must remain reachable between reports, and how much work the radio must do.

  • Measurement: sensor type, warm-up time, sampling interval and energy per reading.
  • Reporting: reporting interval, payload size, transport protocol and whether readings can be batched.
  • Reachability: whether the logger must accept downlink commands while dormant, and the maximum acceptable command or alert delay.
  • Deployment: countries and carriers, installation coverage, mobility, antenna location and enclosure.
  • Operating life: temperature range, maintenance interval and battery replacement expectations.
  • Network behavior: expected registrations, periodic updates, acknowledgments and recovery attempts when coverage is poor.

Count local work as well as radio use. Sensor warm-up and readings, microcontroller processing and sleep, and any location or other peripheral functions belong in the same budget as cellular activity. If the modem is fully powered down or loses registration, include the energy and time needed to boot and attach again.

How do you estimate battery life from an event-based energy budget?

List the recurring and occasional events in a representative operating period. For each, record current, voltage, duration and frequency on the intended hardware. For a roughly constant-current event, its charge is current multiplied by duration; for variable current, integrate current over time. Add the events to obtain charge per day or another chosen period, then compare that workload with the battery’s derated usable energy.

Processor Wake-up, processing, memory or storage writes, and sleep between tasks.
Cellular startup and registration Modem boot, network search and attachment, including full re-registration if it occurs.
Connection and data exchange Connection setup, transmit, receive, server acknowledgment and any required downlink.
Updates and idle residence Periodic network updates, paging-related operation where applicable, and the actual low-power state.
Failures and recovery Retries, backoff, weak-signal behavior, missed acknowledgments and coverage-loss recovery.

Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9151 documentation gives illustrative LTE-M event charges of 325 mC for network and server connection initialization and 87 mC for data transfer to a cloud server. For a deliberately narrow arithmetic example, assume one such initialization and one such transfer each day: the two cited events total 412 mC, or about 0.114 mAh per day and 41.8 mAh per 365-day year. This is not a logger’s daily total or a life estimate: the figures describe Nordic’s platform scenarios, and the calculation excludes sensing, processor use, sleep, updates, retries, battery derating and other events. Add the 97 mC LTE-M tracking-area-update example in that documentation only if the planned network behavior actually produces a separate update event; do not count it automatically as part of every report.

Once all events are included, calculate total energy over the period using their measured voltage and charge, or sum power over time. Compare the result with usable battery energy at the expected temperature and discharge conditions, not just the capacity printed on a cell. Reserve margin for battery aging, self-discharge, variation in signal conditions, and uncertain or unusually expensive network events. A calculation is a design estimate; the validated service interval comes from testing the chosen hardware and deployment.

What do PSM and eDRX mean for reachability?

Power Saving Mode (PSM) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) address different operating needs. In PSM, the device can sleep without regularly monitoring paging, so it is generally suited to a logger that can be unavailable for downlink until a planned wake or reconnection. Microchip Technology describes PSM as a 3GPP feature in which a module registers on a PSM-supporting LTE network and then enters the mode for a configured duration. The network and module must support the feature, and the actual negotiated timers matter.

With eDRX, the device retains periodic paging opportunities. This can support scheduled reachability, but the interval and required response time affect energy use. Neither label alone predicts a logger’s battery life: confirm operator support and negotiated behavior in each deployment market, then measure the resulting current profile.

Choose the reachability contract first. If a logger only needs to send readings and can receive commands at its next planned contact, deep sleep with planned communication may fit. If an application requires more frequent opportunities for downlink, model that requirement’s effect on paging and active time rather than assuming the device can remain both immediately reachable and at its lowest-power state.

Should you use LTE-M or NB-IoT?

There is no universally better choice. The decision depends on the actual deployment and on what local operators support, not just the technology name or a nominal power claim.

Decision factor What to verify for the deployment
Coverage and geography Carrier availability, supported bands and coverage at the installation point, including inside the final enclosure.
Mobility Whether the logger moves and whether the planned service supports the mobility and handover behavior it needs.
Traffic Payload size, data rate, reporting pattern and whether the radio profile can deliver the required traffic efficiently.
Latency and downlink Required alert and command response time, and whether the chosen sleep and paging behavior can meet it.
Hardware and approval Module availability, supported bands, antenna needs, certifications and compatibility with the intended SIM or eSIM and network.
Measured energy Energy per complete transaction, attachment behavior and retries on the intended module, firmware, network and antenna.

LTE-M and NB-IoT capabilities and availability vary by carrier, country and module. For example, Murata’s Type 1SC datasheet describes a particular module revision with LTE Cat M1 and NB1 support, PSM/eDRX, an external antenna and specified certifications; those details are not a general guarantee about other modules. Confirm that the exact module and revision are supported and certified for the target market, then test it on the intended network.

Can the battery supply the modem’s peak current?

Capacity answers how much energy a source may store under stated conditions; it does not establish that the source can sustain a radio event. Check the battery’s discharge curve, internal resistance, pulse-current limit, shelf life, self-discharge and performance at the actual operating temperature and end-of-life voltage. Check the regulator’s transient response and input range as well. The supply must keep the modem rail above the modem’s minimum operating voltage during registration and transmission, not only during sleep.

If the battery cannot directly support the transient load, a capacitor may provide part of the pulse. Its required value depends on the event’s current and duration, how much current the battery and converter can contribute, converter efficiency, output voltage and the minimum acceptable system voltage. There is no universal capacitor value for a cellular logger. Verify the selected battery, converter and capacitor together on the final power path.

Measure voltage and current during boot, registration and transmission with an oscilloscope or power analyzer. A device that resets or browns out during a radio event can repeat expensive startup and registration work, turning a brief supply weakness into an ongoing energy and reliability problem.

How should you validate the estimate?

  1. Instrument the intended design. Use the selected module, firmware, sensors, power converter, antenna and battery or a source that reproduces the battery’s voltage and impedance behavior.
  2. Measure complete event traces. Capture sensor activity, MCU states, modem startup, registration, connection, transmit and receive, updates, sleep and recovery—not just the quietest current reading.
  3. Test representative network conditions. Include the intended carrier and installation geography, and test weaker but plausible signal conditions that may increase connection time or retries.
  4. Exercise the reporting and reachability schedule. Include normal readings, expected downlink or acknowledgments, planned updates and the configured retry/backoff behavior.
  5. Repeat across the temperature and battery range. Check the supply during high-current events at relevant temperatures and near the intended end-of-life voltage.
  6. Recalculate from observations. Convert measured event energy and frequency into the workload budget, compare it with derated usable battery energy, and retain a reserve for variation.

Nordic Semiconductor’s 2018 Cellular IoT Analyst Briefing illustrates how widely current can differ across modem activity contexts, with approximate examples of 15 µA, 0.5 mA and 150 mA. Its slide also shows a 3.7 V, 2700 mAh LTE-M profile and a 15-year battery-life illustration for that stated example. These are vendor presentation figures for an example profile, not a general prediction for an unspecified logger. They are useful reminders to measure both low-power residence and active events, not substitutes for a deployment-specific test.

What changes can reduce energy use without breaking the application?

  • Batch readings when the reporting and alert requirements permit fewer network transactions.
  • Keep payloads efficient and avoid sending unchanged configuration or excess data.
  • Avoid unnecessary detach and reattach cycles and frequent server configuration changes that trigger extra communication.
  • Limit downlink polling to the frequency the application actually needs.
  • Use local thresholds for urgent conditions where practical, while preserving any required reporting and safety behavior.
  • Make retries deliberate. Use robust retry and backoff logic so a dead zone does not cause uncontrolled repeated attempts.
  • Check the final RF installation. Enclosure materials, antenna placement and installation location can affect the link and the amount of radio work needed.
  • Budget non-radio loads. A continuously powered sensor or frequent processor wake-ups can undermine savings from modem sleep.

How should you interpret advertised multi-year lifetimes?

Lifetime claims apply to a specified product, configuration and set of assumptions; they are not transferable to a different logger simply because both use NB-IoT or LTE-M. Efento’s NB-IoT logger documentation, for example, reports “up to 10 years” or “195,000 transmissions” for an example standard pack of three AA cells totaling 6300 mAh. Its table varies expected lifetime with transmission schedule and signal conditions, and its documentation calls consumption indicative while identifying temperature, signal, sensor load, registrations and firmware updates as factors. Treat those figures as that vendor’s product estimate, not a guarantee for a custom design.

No single number of years can be established for an unspecified cellular logger. The result depends on the workload, battery and power path, network behavior and operating conditions. A credible target is therefore a measured estimate for the intended configuration, with its assumptions and reserve stated.
