Building a Multi-Platform Telegram Video Downloader on a 1 GB VPS

A 1 GB VPS is a constraint, not a capacity benchmark. Learn the downloader architecture, dependency choices, concurrency controls, delivery checks, and measurements needed for a reliable Telegram media bot.

A Telegram downloader on a 1 GB VPS should be designed around bounded work, not assumed capacity. A submitted link passes through the bot, a downloader such as yt-dlp, optional media processing with FFmpeg, and then Telegram delivery. The available documentation supports that architecture, but does not establish how many downloads a 1 GB server can handle or document Video Qash Bot’s actual implementation or results. This guide separates practical design choices from claims that require workload measurements.

What a downloader bot needs to do

Think of the service as three cooperating layers. The Telegram bot receives requests, applies policy and reports status. A downloader retrieves media from a supported URL. A media-processing layer may merge streams or perform other conversions before the bot sends a result back.

  1. Receive and validate: accept a message, check that it contains a URL the service intends to handle, and reject unsupported or disallowed requests early.
  2. Download: invoke a downloader such as yt-dlp to retrieve the chosen media format.
  3. Process if needed: merge separate audio and video streams or perform any explicitly supported conversion.
  4. Deliver: send the resulting file through Telegram, then clean up temporary files according to a defined retention policy.

These are separate responsibilities even if a small deployment runs them in one application. Keeping them conceptually distinct helps identify whether a failure comes from request handling, extraction, processing, disk space, or delivery.

Choose dependencies for the job

yt-dlp and extractor support

yt-dlp’s rolling documentation lists Python 3.10 or newer for CPython and 3.11 or newer for PyPy. It also describes ffmpeg, ffprobe, yt-dlp-ejs, and a supported JavaScript runtime as highly recommended dependencies; yt-dlp-ejs is required for full YouTube support. Runtime options named in the documentation include Deno, Node.js, Bun, and QuickJS. Confirm the dependency guidance for the exact yt-dlp release you deploy, because these details can change. See the yt-dlp dependency documentation.

FFmpeg and format selection

Some services provide audio and video as separate streams. yt-dlp documents that merging multiple formats requires FFmpeg; install the FFmpeg binary rather than relying on a similarly named Python package. Format selection can use metadata such as resolution, size, and codec. Choosing a lower-resolution or otherwise smaller format can reduce the amount of media the service must retrieve and store, but the documentation does not quantify the resulting RAM, CPU, or time savings for a particular VPS.

Control requests before they consume the server

A public reference project, yt-dlp-telegram, illustrates useful bot-layer controls. Its README documents a domain allowlist, per-user and global concurrent-download settings, and FIFO queuing for extra global requests. It also lists support for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, and Bluesky, along with video, audio extraction, image/gallery downloads, custom formats, optional logging, and Docker support. These are features claimed by that repository, not a verified platform list or capability guarantee for Video Qash Bot or every URL.

Set limits and queue behavior deliberately

  • Per-user limit: prevents one person from occupying all available download slots.
  • Global concurrency limit: bounds the number of jobs running at once across the bot.
  • Queue policy: decide what happens when the limit is reached—queue, reject with a retry message, or apply another explicit rule.
  • Domain allowlist: restrict accepted links to the domains the service intends to support, rather than treating every URL as safe or compatible.
  • Input and output checks: impose application-specific constraints on requests and generated files, and return understandable errors when a job cannot proceed.

The reference README describes FIFO queueing for excess global requests; an implementation should make its own behavior clear to users and operators. For that repository’s local run, the README specifies Python 3.11 or newer and FFmpeg; its Docker route specifies Docker and Docker Compose. Those are requirements for that project’s documented setup, not universal requirements for all Telegram downloader bots.

Plan around the 1 GB limit without inventing a capacity figure

“1 GB VPS” identifies a memory constraint, not a performance result. The available sources do not show Video Qash Bot’s server configuration, peak RAM, CPU use, disk demand, bandwidth, concurrent workload, uptime, or cost. They therefore cannot support a claim that a 1 GB VPS will reliably serve a particular number of users or simultaneous downloads.

  • 16TB (4 x 4TB) 7.2K 6Gb/s SATA 3.5" HDDs in RAID
  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.

To establish a defensible operating limit, measure the actual workload you expect to serve. Record the number of simultaneous jobs, media duration and selected format, whether merging or conversion is enabled, peak memory, CPU time, temporary storage use, network behavior, queue time, and failures. Distinguish a short test from recurring production behavior, and state the conditions whenever reporting a capacity figure.

What to monitor

  • Memory: observe peak use while downloads and any FFmpeg work overlap; retain headroom for the operating system and bot process.
  • CPU: distinguish downloading from CPU-intensive processing such as transcoding.
  • Temporary storage: account for downloaded inputs and processed outputs that coexist before cleanup.
  • Network and delivery: track retrieval time, outbound transfer, and Telegram send failures.
  • Queue and reliability: monitor waiting jobs, timeouts, retries, and jobs that fail before delivery.

If the service runs out of headroom, reduce the number of concurrent jobs or make the queue wait longer before adding capacity. Avoid enabling conversions or high-resource formats by default unless they are needed. These are design choices to test on the target workload, not guaranteed performance improvements.

Check Telegram delivery limits and terms

Telegram’s Terms of Service page says its services include file uploads up to 2 GB and points users of optional features to additional terms, including Bot Users and Bot Developers terms. That general statement does not specify every bot delivery method or guarantee a particular upload limit for every implementation. Before setting a maximum output size, check the current Telegram Terms of Service, the current Bot API documentation, and the terms applicable to the way the bot sends files.

Build file-size checks and clear failure messages into the delivery path. A download that succeeds can still be too large or otherwise unsuitable to send through the chosen Telegram method. Do not describe a general service upload figure as a bot-specific guarantee without confirming the current API behavior.

Respect copyright and platform rules

A URL being downloadable does not establish permission to download, retain, or redistribute its media. Make the bot’s intended use and restrictions clear, and consider the rights and terms applicable to each source and each user request. Telegram’s FAQ says copyright complaints about infringing publicly available bots, channels, sticker sets, or other public content should be made by the copyright owner or an authorized agent. That is platform complaint guidance, not a legal determination about an individual download. See Telegram’s copyright and illegal-content FAQ.

What can be said about Video Qash Bot’s scaling

The cited public documentation describes yt-dlp dependencies, Telegram context, and a separate reference bot’s controls. It does not identify Video Qash Bot’s code, host, supported platforms, architecture changes, or measured performance. Without those project details and workload measurements, a first-person account of how the bot scaled—or a claim that it achieved a particular throughput on 1 GB—would be unsupported. A credible scaling report should disclose the test conditions and observed memory, CPU, storage, network, concurrency, and failures alongside any capacity claim.
