A phone camera can give your app body landmarks in real time, but it does not give you workout tracking on its own. Turning landmarks into a rep count or form feedback takes exercise-specific logic, careful camera framing, and testing across the conditions your users will actually train in. The platform documentation supports that path. It does not establish how accurate any particular app will be, and it says nothing about clinical or injury-prevention value.
This guide separates three things: what the pose-estimation frameworks document, what an app builder still has to design, and what remains unproven until you measure it yourself.

What a pose framework actually returns
Pose estimation takes an image or video frame and returns a set of body landmarks, each with a position. It does not know that a person is doing a squat, how many squats they completed, or whether their knees caved inward. Those are your app’s responsibilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple’s Vision documentation describes body-pose detection that returns up to 19 unique body points. Apple gives automatic exercise tracking in a fitness app as an example of what this capability could enable. The exact sentence in Apple Developer documentation reads: “A fitness app could automatically track the exercise a user performs.” Apple presents this as one possible use, not as a statement that a specific app or exercise is validated.

Google’s MediaPipe Pose Landmarker accepts still images or video streams. Its task outputs both image landmarks and 3D world landmarks, and its iOS example uses the camera on a physical device for continuous video pose detection. The older MediaPipe Pose guide lists 33 landmarks. Because the Pose Landmarker documentation is the current reference, check it for the exact output format and version-specific behavior before you write integration code against either number.
Choosing between Apple Vision and MediaPipe
The choice usually depends on where the app runs. Apple Vision is the platform-native option for an iOS-first product and can be combined with Core ML if you need custom models on top of pose output. MediaPipe is the more natural choice when you need the same pipeline on several platforms or want to stay within Google’s tooling.

Neither documentation set provides a current, apples-to-apples benchmark for fitness movements. Do not assume one framework is more accurate or faster than the other without measuring both on your target devices, camera angles, and exercises.

Where the phone sits changes what the model can see. Apple’s Vision guidance says the person’s height should ideally be at least one third of the image height, and that many key body regions should be visible in the frame. For a fitness app, that turns framing into an onboarding task rather than a footnote.

- Show a live framing preview before the first set begins, with a clear full-body check.
- Warn when the user is too close, too far, or cropped at the knees or shoulders.
- Ask users to set the phone at a stable height instead of holding it.
- Test lower-body exercises from the side and upper-body exercises from the front, since a single camera angle often hides some joints.
An adjustable phone tripod or stand is a practical optional accessory for workout filming. This is an inference from the framing requirements, not a result from testing. Nothing in the sources shows that a particular mount improves detection, so present it as a convenience for stable framing.
From landmarks to reps
Repetition counting and form feedback are separate layers built on top of landmarks. A typical approach looks like this:

- Choose the joints that define the movement, such as hip, knee, and ankle for a squat, and compute the angle at each relevant joint from the landmark positions.
- Smooth the angle signal across frames so that jitter from a single noisy detection does not register as a rep.
- Define the states of the movement, for example standing, descending, bottom, and ascending, using angle thresholds.
- Count a repetition only when the sequence of states completes in order, and reset cleanly when the user stops or leaves the frame.
- Attach form checks to specific states, and label them as guidance rather than injury warnings.
Each threshold is a design choice that needs validation. A squat threshold that works for one body proportion can miscount another, and the same is true for push-ups viewed from a different angle.
Test across the variation your users will bring
Google’s pose-classification guide explicitly recommends that exercise recognition be checked across camera angles, environments, body shapes, and variations of the exercise. Treat that as a minimum test matrix rather than a suggestion.

- Camera angle: front, side, and oblique placements at the framing distances your app asks for.
- Environment: bright and dim rooms, cluttered backgrounds, and a second person in frame.
- Body shape and clothing: different heights, builds, and loose versus fitted clothing.
- Exercise variation: standard and modified versions of the same movement, and the rep speeds your users actually use.
Record the results for each cell in that matrix. A single good demo video does not establish accuracy across these conditions, and any accuracy figure you publish should name the conditions under which it was measured.
Privacy and data use
Camera-based fitness involves video of a person’s body, often in a home. Apple states that health and fitness data collected in health, fitness, or medical-research contexts may not be used for advertising, marketing, or use-based data mining, and may not be sold to data brokers. Build your data flow with that restriction in mind from the start: decide which frames, landmarks, and derived metrics you store, how long you keep them, and whether processing happens on the device.
The sources reviewed do not state where MediaPipe or Apple Vision processes data in every configuration, so confirm that against the current documentation and your own architecture rather than assuming it.
What the evidence does not establish
Pose estimation confirms where joints appear in a frame. It does not establish that an exercise was performed correctly, that a user’s form is safe, or that the app prevents injury. The sources reviewed also do not establish clinical accuracy, calorie estimates, support for every exercise or body type, app-store approval, or any specific privacy compliance result. If your app makes any of those claims, it needs separate evidence and validation.
