The best Linux terminal setup is usually assembled from a few separate tools, not downloaded as one package: a terminal emulator, a shell, and—if you want them— a custom prompt and a multiplexer. Choose each layer for the job you need it to do, then configure them one at a time. There is no evidence-based universal winner or speed champion among the options covered here.
What “build your own terminal” means
A terminal setup has distinct layers. The terminal emulator is the desktop application that displays a terminal window and sends your keystrokes to a shell. The shell interprets commands and runs programs. A prompt is the text and symbols that show you where you are or other status information. A multiplexer such as tmux can organize multiple terminal sessions, windows, and panes.

These tools are optional choices, not a single all-or-nothing package. You can keep your existing desktop terminal and shell, change only the prompt, or add tmux only if you need its session and pane workflow.
Choose the layers that solve your problem
Terminal emulator: pick features and configuration style
Alacritty is a configurable, cross-platform terminal emulator with documented Linux and BSD support. Its documented features include vi mode, scrollback search, regex hints, and multiple windows. WezTerm supports Linux and other platforms, can be built from source, and uses Lua configuration. Its documentation covers configurable program launching and shell integration through OSC sequences. Those are useful distinctions if you want Lua-based configuration or shell integration; they do not establish that it is faster or better for everyone. The available project documentation describes features and configuration, not a controlled, directly comparable performance benchmark. A speed or GPU-related claim alone cannot tell you which emulator will feel best on your machine.

Shell: keep it separate from the emulator
Your shell is not the terminal window. You can often keep the shell you already use while changing emulators, or keep the emulator and change the shell. Shell startup files are where shell initialization and prompt setup belong. An emulator can affect which shell starts: Alacritty allows a configured program and arguments, while WezTerm documents POSIX behavior that resolves the user’s shell from the password database and launches it as a login shell by default.

Starship is a cross-shell prompt tool. Its documentation describes shell-specific initialization and configurable modules. For its intended glyph setup, a Nerd Font must be installed on the system and selected in the terminal emulator; otherwise symbols may not render as intended. Follow the Starship project documentation for shell initialization and the Starship configuration guide for prompt settings.

Multiplexer: add tmux for sessions, windows, and panes
tmux runs inside a terminal and lets you manage multiple terminal programs. Its sessions can be detached and reattached, which is useful when you need a session to continue while disconnected. Configuration is in ~/.tmux.conf, and the project documentation describes reloading it with source-file. Read the tmux Getting Started guide and check its installation instructions for your system.
Assemble a setup without losing track of what changed
- Identify the gap. Start with the terminal you already have. Decide whether you want different appearance, keyboard navigation, tabs or windows, a different shell, more prompt information, or persistence across disconnects.
- Choose an emulator for a specific reason. Compare documented features and configuration style. If you choose Alacritty, its reference shows how to set the shell program and arguments. If you choose WezTerm, consult its launch and Lua configuration documentation.
- Confirm the shell starts correctly. Keep emulator settings separate from shell startup files. Check which shell launches, then make shell or login behavior changes only where appropriate for your chosen emulator.
- Configure the prompt after the shell works. Add Starship initialization using the instructions for your shell, then customize modules. Install and enable a Nerd Font in the emulator if you want the glyphs used by the documented setup.
- Add tmux only for a workflow need. Install it using the project instructions, then configure sessions, windows, or panes in
~/.tmux.conf. Verify terminal capability behavior before layering it into an existing setup. - Change one layer at a time. Keep a recoverable copy of configuration, test changes in a fresh shell or session, and revert the last change if the result is unexpected. This makes it easier to tell whether an issue comes from the emulator, shell, prompt, or tmux.
Check terminal compatibility when using tmux
The TERM value tells programs what terminal capabilities to expect. The tmux FAQ explains that it must identify the correct terminal description; inside tmux, use a suitable tmux or screen description, such as tmux-256color, when that description is available and appropriate for the system. A mismatch can cause programs to mis-handle colors or other terminal features. See the tmux FAQ before changing terminal settings globally.

How to decide what is “best” for you
- Choose an emulator based on the features you will use and whether its configuration approach suits you.
- Choose or keep a shell independently; an emulator choice does not require a particular shell.
- Use a prompt customizer if the information or appearance it adds is worth configuring.
- Add tmux when persistent sessions or pane and window management solve a real workflow problem.
- Avoid choosing on an unsupported speed ranking: the cited project documentation does not provide a directly comparable benchmark.
