Virtual events can expose you to project-management practices, new ideas and professional conversations, but attending one does not by itself make you a more effective project manager. Start with a specific skill gap, choose sessions that address it, and deliberately try one useful idea in your work afterward.
What virtual events can—and cannot—do for your skills
Online professional events can give you access to presentations, breakout sessions and conversations with other project professionals. Depending on the format, you can explore practices related to communication, leadership, business or delivery. These are possible areas to investigate, not a ranking of which skills matter most.

PMI describes its events as opportunities to learn and build skills. That is an intended benefit, not independent evidence that attending improves performance. The official pages cited here do not report measured competency gains from virtual-event participation. Treat an event as a learning opportunity; the benefit depends on choosing relevant material and applying it.
Formats also differ. A conference-style event, an on-demand webinar and an instructor-led course are not interchangeable: they offer different degrees of structure and interaction.

Choose a format that fits your learning need
| Option | What it offers | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| PMXPO 2026 | PMI describes it as a free virtual event with mainstage and breakout sessions. Its event page states that on-demand access runs through 29 January 2027 and that the event offers 12 PDUs. | Does the agenda address your skill gap? Does the access window work for you, and do the stated PDUs meet your needs? |
| PMI webinar library | On-demand presentations covering project-management best practices, upskilling and techniques; PMI describes the webinars as a way to learn and earn PDUs. | Is there a specific session on your topic? Is it accessible to you, and is it eligible for your credential requirements? |
| PMI instructor-led training | Courses are available virtually and in person. PMI’s training page describes more than 100 interactive small-group sessions, ranging from four hours to four days. | Does the course match your need and preferred delivery? Check its current schedule, duration, format and terms. |
| PMI event calendar and chapter events | A searchable calendar includes virtual and chapter events. | Is the listing relevant to your role, virtual or local as you need, and available on the date shown? |
PMI’s PMXPO page calls the event “the premier, free virtual experience for Project Professionals—not just to learn and build skills, but to step up.” That is PMI’s description of its own event, not an independent assessment of its effectiveness. Event schedules, access windows, PDU offerings and training catalogs can change, so check the linked page for current details before registering.
Turn an event into deliberate workplace practice
- Name the gap. Make it concrete: for example, improving how you communicate project changes, lead a discussion or manage delivery. Use a recent project challenge to identify what you want to do differently.
- Check the agenda before you commit. Look for sessions that address that need, rather than choosing solely by title or the number of sessions available. For a webinar, review its topic and description; for a course, check its scope and time commitment.
- Capture one usable idea. During or after a session, write down a technique, question or practice you could adapt. Note the situation where it might help and any assumptions you would need to test.
- Try it on a suitable project. Pick a real, low-risk opportunity to apply the idea. Adapt it to your team and context rather than treating a presentation as a universal rule.
- Review what happened. Record what you tried and what changed. Where appropriate, discuss the result with a colleague or team member and decide whether to keep, adjust or drop the practice.
This follow-through is practical advice, not a guaranteed or formally tested outcome. It helps distinguish collecting event attendance from building a habit you can evaluate in your own work.

Check accessibility and PDU details
PMI says the PMXPO platform supports screen readers, keyboard navigation and customizable display options. If you rely on a particular feature, verify that it meets your needs before the event. The event page’s 12-PDU figure is specific to PMXPO 2026; it is not a measure of skill improvement.

Find the next relevant opportunity
Use the PMI event calendar to search for virtual, chapter and affiliate events, then open individual listings to confirm format, date and access details. If you want flexible timing, browse the webinar library. If you need guided instruction and interaction, examine the current training catalog rather than assuming a webinar or conference will provide the same structure.
Choose the option that fits the gap you identified, the time you can commit and the way you learn best. Relevance and follow-through matter more than simply registering or accumulating attendance.
