You can turn a text description into a FreeCAD STL workflow by asking an AI assistant to draft a FreeCAD Python macro, reviewing and running that code in FreeCAD, then exporting the finished geometry as STL. FreeCAD documents Python scripting, macros, and mesh export; the documentation does not establish that “ChatGPT 6 Astra” is an official model name or verify that any particular model produces working CAD code.
What a text prompt can—and cannot—do
A prompt is a way to describe the part and request code; it does not directly create a dependable STL. FreeCAD supports Python scripting for programmatically creating elements, giving generated code a concrete interface with the CAD application. FreeCAD’s Python documentation describes this scripting capability.

The documentation establishes FreeCAD’s capabilities, not the accuracy of code from a particular AI model. Treat generated code as a draft: inspect it, run it in FreeCAD, and examine the resulting geometry before exporting. The supplied model name, “ChatGPT 6 Astra,” is not verified here as an official product identity.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Give the assistant enough information to build a specific shape rather than guessing. Include the dimensions and units, the overall form, holes or cutouts, and how the part is meant to be used. Ask for a FreeCAD Python macro that creates editable geometry and explains any assumptions it makes.

- Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
- Shape: Name the basic form and how features relate—for example, a plate with a centered opening.
- Dimensions and units: State the overall measurements and feature sizes, and identify the units explicitly.
- Features: Specify hole locations, cutouts, rounded or chamfered edges, and any required clearances.
- Orientation: Explain which face should sit on a reference plane or point upward.
- Deliverable: Request a FreeCAD script, an editable model, and instructions for exporting the intended object as STL.
Ask the assistant to flag missing measurements rather than silently inventing them. If it must make an assumption, have it list that assumption so you can check it against the intended part.
Review and run the generated FreeCAD code
Read the script before executing it. Check that its dimensions and units match the prompt, that it creates the intended features, and that it does not contain commands you do not understand. FreeCAD’s manual describes the Python console for entering commands individually and macros for more complex, multi-line scripts. A FreeCAD manual covers both entry routes.

| Route | Best suited to | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Python console | Short commands or small experiments | Enter commands individually in FreeCAD’s console. |
| Macro | A longer, multi-line model script | Put the script in a macro and run it in FreeCAD. |
After running the code, inspect the model in FreeCAD. Check its overall dimensions, orientation, openings, and whether the intended solid was created. Correct the script or prompt if the result differs from the design; do not assume that code running without an error means the part is correct.
Save the editable model and export an STL
Save the FreeCAD document as well as the STL. FreeCAD describes its objects as parametric, and STL is among its supported export formats. Keeping the project lets you return to the CAD model to make changes; the STL is the mesh file for downstream use. FreeCAD’s feature list describes its parametric approach and supported formats.

FreeCAD documents mesh export through its interface and Python’s Mesh module. Its API documentation shows the Mesh.export() method exporting document objects to an STL file. FreeCAD’s source documentation provides the API reference, and the Mesh Export documentation describes the export workflow.
- Inspect the model and identify the object or mesh you intend to export.
- Save the editable FreeCAD document.
- Export the intended object as STL using FreeCAD’s mesh-export interface, or use the documented Python
Mesh.export()method in a script. - Open the STL in the downstream application and check the mesh and dimensions there.
Check the STL for its intended use
An STL export alone does not establish that a part is suitable for 3D printing or another downstream use. If you plan to print it, check it in the slicer you intend to use and against your printer’s requirements. Verify that the dimensions, orientation, openings, and mesh are appropriate for that specific use; there is no universal printability guarantee from exporting an STL.
