Build Android Location Features That Respect Battery Life

Design Android location features around the user's task: bounded foreground requests, visible foreground-service sessions, delayed background work, or geofences—with permissions and update rates matched to the need.

To keep an Android location feature useful without draining the battery, match its update rate and accuracy to what the user is doing, stop requests as soon as the task ends, and avoid continuous polling when a one-time fix or geofence will do. Use a location foreground service for a user-visible session such as navigation or workout tracking; ordinary background requests are throttled to only a few updates per hour on Android 8.0 (API 26) and later.

Choose the location pattern that fits the feature

The key design decision is not simply how often to request location. It is whether the user expects a one-time answer, live tracking, delayed background updates, or a response to crossing a boundary. Those patterns have different latency, permission, and battery trade-offs.

Feature need Recommended pattern Accuracy and timing Visibility and permission considerations
Show a location or share it after an explicit action A bounded request while the relevant screen is visible Use the least accuracy that serves the feature; stop after the result or when the action ends Request foreground access in context
Live map, navigation, or active workout Frequent updates during visible use; use a location foreground service if the session must continue across app switches or screen-off High accuracy and intervals of a few seconds can suit real-time use; slower intervals are preferable when the feature can tolerate them Ongoing service is user-visible through a persistent notification
Occasional background refresh Low-power or passive requests, optionally delivered in batches Accept delayed, infrequent results; background updates are throttled on Android 8.0 and later Background access should be requested only for a core feature that needs it
React to entering or leaving a place Geofencing Allow minutes of notification delay where the product permits More appropriate than continuous polling for area transitions

Android’s real-world scenario guidance distinguishes live, user-visible tracking from passive and background work. There is no single interval that is best for every app: choose based on the user-visible result and the delay the feature can tolerate.

Use bounded requests for one-time and visible tasks

One-time or short-lived location

When a user taps a control to show their position or share it, request location while the relevant activity is visible. Start with coarse (approximate) access unless the feature has a specific need for precision. Tie the request to a clear end condition, such as receiving the result, leaving the screen, or the action expiring. Android identifies failure to remove updates when they are no longer needed as a common source of unnecessary battery drain in its battery optimization guidance.

Frequent updates while the user is actively watching

For a live map or another feature where the user expects a moving, current position, high accuracy may be justified while that feature is active. Android’s scenario guidance says intervals of a few seconds can suit real-time requests. If real-time precision is unnecessary, it recommends using intervals of a few minutes; approximately two minutes or longer is its guidance for reducing battery use, not a universal optimum. Stop updates promptly when the visible session ends.

Keep tracking alive across app switches only when the user expects it

For navigation or exercise tracking that the user starts and expects to continue while using other apps or with the display off, use a location foreground service. The persistent notification makes the ongoing work visible. Declare android:foregroundServiceType="location" for the service on Android 10 (API 29) and later, as described in the location permission documentation.

A foreground service is a fit for an ongoing, user-visible task, not a way to hide arbitrary collection. If the feature does not need continuous tracking, prefer a bounded request, passive updates, or a geofence instead.

Do not design ordinary background work as real-time polling

On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, apps running in the background receive location only a few times each hour under the platform’s background limits. That behavior makes ordinary background polling a poor choice for a feature that promises near-real-time tracking. See Android’s background location guidance and its Android 8.0 background location limits.

First check whether the need can be served by a user-started foreground session, a one-time location, or geofencing. Request background permission only when background access is essential to a core user-facing feature, explain the benefit, and make the app useful if the user declines. Android Developers states that background access must be critical to the app’s core functionality, provide clear user benefits, and be obvious to the user; Google Play also applies separate eligibility and policy requirements, so technical implementation alone does not ensure approval.

A foreground service can support faster updates for an appropriate active task, but it does not bypass permission restrictions. On Android 11 (API 30) and later, starting a location foreground service from the background requires background location permission. Consult the current background access documentation for the version-sensitive rules.

Prefer geofences for area entry and exit

If the product needs to react when someone enters or leaves a place, use the Geofencing API rather than repeatedly checking the device’s position when that behavior fits. Android describes geofencing as optimized for performance. Its scenario guidance suggests notification responsiveness of approximately five minutes, or approximately ten minutes if the feature can tolerate more delay; these are guidance values, not delivery guarantees. The documented maximum is 100 registered geofences at a time. See Android’s scenario guidance.

Request permissions in stages and design for approximate location

  1. Ask when the feature needs location. Request foreground permission after the user invokes the relevant feature, and explain why it needs location. Android’s runtime permission guidance recommends asking in context.
  2. Begin with foreground access. Request background access later, and only for the specific feature that requires it. For apps targeting Android 11 (API 30) or later, requesting foreground and background location together is ignored and grants neither.
  3. Explain the Settings step on newer versions. On Android 11 and later, users enable background access through Settings rather than an “Allow all the time” option in the runtime dialog. Explain why the setting is needed and let the user decline.
  4. Request precision only when needed. On Android 12 (API 31) and later, a user can grant approximate location even if the app requests fine location. If precision is essential, request coarse and fine together and keep the feature useful with approximate access wherever possible.

Android describes approximate estimates as covering about 3 square kilometers for its stated location providers and precise estimates as usually within about 50 meters, sometimes within a few meters or better. Those are typical documentation descriptions, not guarantees. Background accuracy follows the user’s foreground accuracy choice: a user who allows only approximate foreground access also provides approximate background access. Android 10 and later require declaring ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION to request background permission at runtime; on earlier versions, foreground location permission also included background access. See the location permission guide and background permission guide.

Reduce battery cost in the request and delivery design

  • Pair every request with a stop condition. Remove updates when the user leaves the feature or the session expires. Lifecycle-aware handling can help prevent requests from outliving the work that needs them.
  • Set a finite duration. Give requests an expiration so a missed cleanup path cannot keep them active indefinitely. Android’s optimization guidance covers request duration and update removal.
  • Choose the slowest acceptable cadence and least demanding priority. Reserve sustained high accuracy and second-scale intervals for a user-visible real-time need. For passive or background scenarios, Android recommends PRIORITY_NO_POWER when feasible, or balanced/low power when it is not; sustained high accuracy substantially drains battery.
  • Batch non-foreground delivery when latency permits. Set computation cadence with setIntervalMillis() and allow delayed delivery with setMaxUpdateDelayMillis(). Android recommends making the maximum delivery delay a multiple of the interval. Its example requests computation every 10 minutes and permits a 60-minute maximum delay, yielding approximately six points delivered in a batch about once an hour. This illustrates requested behavior and fewer wakeups, not a guaranteed schedule or measured percentage saving.
  • Consider passive receipt. Passive updates can reuse location another app has already caused to be computed, avoiding an additional computation request. Your callback may still trigger CPU or I/O work, so throttle downstream processing too.
  • Allow geofence delay where practical. A less urgent notification response can preserve power when the product does not require an immediate transition alert.
  • Audit dependencies. Check libraries and SDKs for location access; Android attributes location use by an SDK or library to your app.

Android’s battery guide and scenario guide provide the underlying request and use-case recommendations. Their examples do not establish a universal battery-saving percentage; actual impact depends on the device, request pattern, and user settings.

Account for the user’s Android version and accuracy choice

Location behavior is shaped by both Android version and the user’s permission choice. A permission request is not a promise of precise coordinates or immediate background updates: users can grant approximate access, and system background limits constrain ordinary requests. Verify the behavior against the Android versions your app supports, and design graceful fallbacks for denied background access or approximate-only access.

Permission implementation also does not settle policy eligibility. Google Play separately restricts background location to qualifying core functionality. Review the current Android background location guidance and Play requirements before shipping a background-dependent feature.
