Use Angular resources when they fit the operation: a loader for work that resolves once, or a stream for repeated updates such as tool events. The agent-specific state model is an application design, not a state machine prescribed by Angular.
What the interface should explain
An agent UI is useful when it shows what the runtime actually knows: the current phase, whether work is waiting or progressing, which operation is underway, whether a result is available, whether something failed, and what the user can do next. Avoid implying activity the backend has not reported. In particular, show “thinking” or “tool running” only when runtime events support those labels.

Angular describes Signals as a system that tracks how and where state is used so the framework can optimize rendering updates. Read signals in templates or in computed derivations; Angular can then update the relevant consumers when their values change. See the Angular Signals overview and Signals essentials.
Separate runtime facts from display state
Keep writable signals for facts received from the agent runtime, and derive display decisions from those facts. The backend protocol determines the exact fields; Angular does not prescribe a canonical agent state model.
#1 Best Overall
Store facts the runtime supplies
- The active run identifier.
- User-visible messages and the current phase.
- The active tool operation, if there is one.
- Timestamps or event data the runtime actually provides.
- An error that should be shown to the user.
Represent only facts your runtime can establish. For example, do not manufacture a timestamp or tool operation merely to fill a UI field.
Derive the view model
Use computed() for deterministic display state based on the source values: concise status text, whether a progress indicator should appear, whether a response can be displayed, whether retry or stop controls are available, and whether a tool-detail panel is open. A computed signal is read-only and recalculates when signals it reads change.
Rank #2
Use linkedSignal() when a value is derived but also needs to be set manually. Do not mirror one signal into another with an effect just to represent derived state. Angular warns that effect-based state propagation can cause expression-changed errors, circular updates, or unnecessary change detection; its effects guide says, “Effects should be the last API you reach for.”
Choose loading or streaming to match the agent
The important distinction is the update pattern. A request that produces one completed result is a one-shot operation; a connection that emits progress or tool events repeatedly is a stream. Match the integration to the transport and to the status the runtime owns.
Rank #3
| Pattern | Use when | Angular approach | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-shot result | The operation resolves once after a request. | A resource loader, or another one-shot asynchronous integration. |
Loading, errors, cancellation, and whether a prior result remains visible while reloading. |
| Repeated updates | The source emits incremental progress, tool events, or other updates. | A resource stream for continuously updating data such as WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, or Firestore listeners. |
Keep displayed progress aligned with emitted events and the authoritative status source. |
Angular resources expose status, value, loading, and error signals. Their status vocabulary includes idle, error, loading, reloading, resolved, and local. Map these to product language only when the meanings match. Angular notes that status information can drive loading indicators and error messages in the resource guide.
Make asynchronous status truthful
Do not collapse every non-complete state into an indefinite spinner. Translate known runtime or resource states into clear feedback, and preserve distinctions that affect the user’s next action. For example, an error, a first load, a reload, and a completed result are different conditions. The label should describe the condition evidenced by the resource or agent events, not speculate about the agent’s internal process.
Rank #4
Resource loaders receive an AbortSignal. Angular aborts an outstanding load when its parameters change; the loader must pass the supplied signal to underlying work such as fetch if that work should respond to cancellation. Whether changing parameters stops or supersedes an agent run is a separate application policy. Decide explicitly what happens to the run, its events, and any visible prior response.

Use effect() when signal state must synchronize with an imperative API outside ordinary Angular state modeling—for example, logging, browser storage, or a third-party renderer. Effects run asynchronously during change detection. For relationships between application values, prefer computed() or, where manual setting is needed, linkedSignal(). Angular documents suitable effect uses, timing, and cleanup in its effects guide.
Handle async dependencies and nested data carefully
Read reactive dependencies before an async boundary
Signals read after an asynchronous boundary are not tracked in the earlier reactive context. If a signal must participate in that reactive computation, read it before await, as covered in Angular’s Signals overview.
Replace nested data instead of mutating it in place
Read-only signals do not prevent deep mutation of an object they contain. Treat nested signal values as immutable by convention: create and set an updated value so signal consumers are notified, rather than mutating an existing object or array without replacing it.
Quick Recap
A practical design checklist
- Identify which status facts come from the agent runtime and which are derived for presentation.
- Keep runtime facts writable; use computed derivations for labels, visibility, and action availability.
- Choose a one-shot loader or a stream according to how the source updates.
- Show distinct states only where the runtime or resource can substantiate them.
- Define how cancellation, superseding requests, errors, and prior results behave in the product.
- Reserve effects for synchronization with imperative systems, not for copying state.
- Ensure updates to nested values replace or otherwise notify signal consumers.
