Build a static visual mockup of YouTube’s front page with a header, navigation, and responsive video-card grid. HTML gives the page its structure; CSS Grid, Flexbox, and media queries shape its layout. Search, account controls, recommendations, and sidebar toggles do not become functional just because they appear on the page.
What this HTML and CSS project includes
Treat “clone” as a layout exercise, not a copy of YouTube’s video service. A useful first version recreates the familiar arrangement: a top header, a sidebar or compact navigation, optional category chips, and a main grid of video previews. A 2020 tutorial by Web Dev Simplified presents the project as a learning exercise rather than an exact replica and covers CSS Grid and Flexbox: How To Design A YouTube Clone With HTML/CSS.

A separate HTML/CSS-only example describes a responsive header, collapsible-style sidebar, and video grid. Its README identifies real search behavior and sidebar toggling as possible JavaScript additions, making the boundary clear: the static page can show controls without implementing them (HTML & CSS YouTube homepage clone).

Use semantic elements for the major regions and repeated content. The following outline keeps layout concerns separate from each card’s content:

- Header: a logo treatment, search field, and icon or profile placeholders.
- Navigation: a sidebar on wider screens, with a simpler or hidden version when space is tight.
- Main content: optional category chips followed by repeated video previews.
- Video card: a thumbnail, title, channel or author, and optional duration or view metadata.
Use a real heading for the page’s main content, lists where content is genuinely a list, and buttons or links only when they perform an action. Decorative icons can be given accessible labels when they communicate meaning; avoid presenting a nonfunctional search field or toggle as though it works.
Build the repeated video-preview grid
CSS Grid is a natural fit for cards that repeat in rows and columns. Flexbox can align items within a card or header row—for example, a channel image beside its name. These are practical choices rather than requirements; both layout systems are covered by the cited tutorial and example.
Rank #2
Keep the content of each card consistent so the grid remains easy to maintain. Use image placeholders or properly sourced thumbnails for a visual-only page. A duration badge can sit over the thumbnail, while the title and channel details remain below it. The page can look convincing without attempting to reproduce YouTube’s live recommendations or account-specific content.

Make the layout responsive
Use CSS media queries to adapt the grid and navigation as the viewport narrows. A common approach is to reduce the number of card columns and replace a full sidebar with a compact navigation treatment. The cited example specifically describes media queries for responsive behavior, but neither source establishes a single required breakpoint or column count; choose those values for the content and widths your design supports.
Rank #3
Check the layout at wide, medium, and narrow widths. Look for practical failures: titles that overflow, cards that become too narrow to read, controls that collide in the header, and navigation that consumes more space than the videos. Responsive styling changes presentation; it does not add interactive behavior.
Know what CSS does—and what it does not
A search box, profile icon, or sidebar button can be represented in HTML and styled with CSS, but styling alone does not make search, sign-in, recommendations, or a toggle work. The GitHub example lists search behavior and sidebar toggling as potential JavaScript improvements. Keep those controls clearly decorative in a static mockup, or implement their behavior separately with appropriate code.

Likewise, a thumbnail is not a playable video. If the project needs real playback, YouTube Help explains how to open a video or playlist, choose Share, select Embed, and copy the supplied HTML into a website: Embed videos & playlists. YouTube’s page also says the API Terms of Service and Developer Policies apply to use of the embedded player. To use privacy-enhanced mode, the documented change is to replace the embed host www.youtube.com with www.youtube-nocookie.com; that does not remove the applicable policy requirements.
Choose media and branding deliberately
For layout practice, placeholder artwork is enough. If you use logos, thumbnails, or other artwork, source them appropriately rather than assuming that reproducing a layout grants permission to use someone else’s media. The cited sources describe interface practice and embedding instructions; they do not establish permissions for particular assets. This mockup should not be presented as an official YouTube product.
