You can build a Slack app that reacts when someone pastes an IP address, checks it with an IP-intelligence API, and posts a concise, evidence-based summary in the same conversation. The app investigates the address in the message text; Slack does not automatically reveal the network IP address of the person who posted it.
How the message-to-investigation flow works
Use Slack’s Events API to receive message events, validate and extract IP literals, query an intelligence provider, then use Slack’s Web API to reply. Events can reach a public HTTP request URL or be delivered through Socket Mode. Your app only receives events it has subscribed to, has the required scopes for, and is allowed to see based on conversation access and membership. See Slack’s Events API documentation.

- Receive an event. Configure the relevant message event subscriptions for the channels or direct messages where the bot should operate.
- Validate and parse. Verify that the request came from Slack, ignore bot-generated messages, and extract only valid IPv4 or IPv6 literals from message text.
- Acknowledge promptly. Process the event without holding up Slack’s acknowledgement. Use a queue or background worker if the lookup may take longer than the event response window.
- Query an IP-intelligence provider. Request an existing report or check, and decide whether a fresh rescan is appropriate.
- Reply in the originating conversation. Use the Slack Web API to post the address, provider, notable findings, lookup time, and a provider report link when available. Slack’s Web API provides methods for workspace actions; its Events API guide demonstrates
chat.postMessagefor a bot response.
Configure Slack to deliver the right messages
Create a Slack app, enable the relevant event subscriptions, grant only the scopes it needs, and install it in the workspace. Select events and conversation types deliberately: subscribing to an event does not grant visibility into every conversation. The bot must have the applicable permissions and access to the channel or direct message in question.

For delivery, choose either a public HTTP request URL or Socket Mode. An HTTP endpoint needs to be reachable by Slack; Socket Mode is the documented alternative when you do not want to expose a public event request URL. Follow the setup and event-specific requirements in the Events API guide.

Validate events and extract IP addresses safely
Do not treat arbitrary message text as a trusted command. Verify Slack’s request authenticity before processing the payload, and ignore messages authored by bots—including your own app—to prevent loops. Extract IPv4 and IPv6 literals with a parser that validates address syntax rather than relying on a loose pattern match. If a message contains several valid addresses, define whether the bot checks all of them or asks the user to choose.
Slack may deliver an event more than once. Record event identifiers and make processing idempotent so a duplicate delivery does not trigger repeated provider calls or duplicate replies. Apply sensible per-user, per-conversation, and provider rate limits. Slack’s security guidance covers verifying that inbound requests genuinely originate from Slack.

Choose a provider and decide what “investigate” means
Provider APIs are not interchangeable. Decide whether the bot should retrieve an existing report, submit a check, or request a fresh rescan, and review the provider’s current authentication, account, rate-limit, and data-handling requirements before implementation.
| Provider and operation | What the documentation establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| VirusTotal IP report | GET endpoint for an existing IP report. API reference. | VirusTotal says queried indicators are scanned and added to its dataset, where they are accessible to the community. Do not send sensitive indicators without assessing that consequence. |
| VirusTotal rescan | Separate POST endpoint to request a rescan of an IP. API reference. | A rescan is distinct from retrieving an existing report; use it only when the workflow and data-sharing implications warrant it. |
| AbuseIPDB IP check | Documents an IP-checking API. API documentation. | AbuseIPDB says an account is required and that APIv1 is deprecated in favor of APIv2. Confirm the current version and request details before coding. |
The available documentation does not establish that these services have equivalent coverage, pricing, or accuracy. Compare the evidence fields and timestamps returned, how missing or stale reports are represented, authentication and rate limits, account requirements, and the consequences of submitting indicators. Do not label one service superior without current comparative evidence.

Make the result useful without overstating it
Keep the Slack response compact and make its evidence traceable. Include the queried IP, provider, lookup time, notable returned findings, and a link to the provider’s report when one exists. If there is no report, say “no report found”—not “clean.” A reputation score or a listing is evidence to assess, not proof that an address is malicious or benign. If the provider’s response exposes timestamps, include them so readers can judge how current the evidence is.
Handle provider errors, timeouts, and rate limits as distinct outcomes. Report that a lookup could not be completed rather than converting an API failure into a clean result. Avoid posting raw API responses if they contain fields that are confusing, sensitive, or irrelevant to the conversation.

Protect credentials and account for indicator privacy
Store Slack and provider credentials in a secret store, restrict OAuth scopes to what the app needs, and avoid logging tokens or full message bodies unnecessarily. Slack documents an IP allowlist for OAuth token use against Web API and SCIM methods; it does not apply to incoming webhooks. See Slack’s security guidance.

Before sending an address to an external service, consider whether it is sensitive or confidential. VirusTotal’s IP report documentation warns: “Do not submit or query indicators containing sensitive, confidential, or personally identifiable information (PII).” Its documentation says queried indicators are added to a community-accessible dataset. That makes provider selection and user expectations part of the design, not just an API configuration choice.

Keep Slack audit signals separate from pasted-IP lookups
Slack’s audit-log documentation describes IP-related anomaly signals such as a new ASN, a cloud ASN, or inclusion in an IOC list. Those signals concern anomalous IP use associated with Slack user or app tokens; they are not the same as an intelligence lookup of an arbitrary address pasted into a message. See the anomalous events reference.
