Build a Self-Hosted Agent Stack for Chat, Voice, Tasks, and Memory

A practical guide to using OpenClaw as an assistant gateway, with optional browser chat, voice routes, structured task workflows, and explicit memory storage.

You can build an “agent operating system” by combining an always-on assistant gateway with the chat interfaces, voice routes, task workflows, and memory storage you actually need. OpenClaw is a documented starting point for the gateway and assistant runtime; Open WebUI can add a browser chat interface, and n8n can provide explicit task workflows and a separate memory pipeline. These are complementary components to configure, not one prebuilt system that automatically unifies every feature.

What an agent operating system means here

It is a useful name for a layered assistant stack, not a new general-purpose operating system. In this design, a gateway connects people and messaging channels to an agent; the agent uses configured tools and sessions; and separate files or storage systems preserve selected information between conversations. A browser interface, voice client, and workflow engine are optional additions.

OpenClaw describes itself as an AI assistant running on infrastructure you control. It is the central runtime in this example because its documented capabilities span messaging connections, tools, sessions, memory, and voice-related options. It does not remove the need to choose a model provider, configure channels, define permissions, or decide what information should persist.

Choose where the gateway will run

Start with a computer or server you already manage. OpenClaw documents deployment on Mac, Linux, or a VPS, and its repository includes installation paths for macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2. Installation requirements can change, so use the current official OpenClaw installation instructions for the supported method and software versions rather than relying on an old command copied into a guide.

A dedicated always-on home computer is an option if you do not want your everyday machine to host the gateway. It is not a documented requirement: the available documentation does not establish a minimum CPU, memory, or storage specification, or validate a particular mini PC. A VPS is another deployment location, but it changes where the gateway and its local state reside.

Set up the gateway and connect one channel

Use the official personal-assistant setup guide for the installation flow and the instructions for your chosen messaging channel. Its WhatsApp example pairs WhatsApp Web, starts the gateway, and uses an allowlisted sender. Treat that as an example for that channel, not a universal procedure; channel setup and support can differ.

  1. Install OpenClaw using the current official instructions. Select the documented path for your host, then complete the setup flow for the gateway and assistant.
  2. Pair one messaging channel. Follow the current instructions for that channel and verify that the intended account can reach the assistant before connecting more surfaces.
  3. Restrict who can message it. For the WhatsApp example, the setup guide recommends sender allowlisting and a dedicated assistant number. Do not treat an unrestricted personal messaging account as a safe default.
  4. Keep the first tool policy conservative. The setup documentation warns that, depending on policy, an agent may run commands, work with workspace files, and message people on your behalf. Limit access and use sandboxing while evaluating behavior; grant additional capabilities deliberately.
  5. Review recurring activity. The documented setup says heartbeats default to every 30 minutes and provides a setting to disable recurring polling during evaluation. Decide whether scheduled checks are useful before leaving them enabled.

The guide uses port 18789 as a sample gateway port and describes dashboard access and authentication. Follow its current instructions for the actual dashboard and authentication behavior on your installation; do not assume that an example port or an accessible dashboard is protected simply because the gateway runs on your own machine.

Add a browser chat interface only if you want one

OpenClaw can be used through supported messaging channels; a separate browser UI is not necessary. If you want a dedicated web chat, Open WebUI supports Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs and documents Docker, Python, and desktop installation options. Its OpenClaw integration documentation describes two patterns:

  • Use Open WebUI as the chat frontend: connect through the API so the browser interface is the primary way you chat with the OpenClaw assistant.
  • Use Open WebUI Channels: let an OpenClaw bot participate in a channel inside Open WebUI, while keeping the two products’ roles distinct.

Choose based on where you want to interact, not on an assumption that the browser UI supplies the gateway, memory, or task system. Open WebUI’s documentation compared compressed Linux/amd64 images on September 28, 2026: its :slim image was 176 MB versus 1.66 GB for :main, described as 89% less to download. Those figures apply to the documented architecture and check date; the slim image expects external services for features including voice and knowledge search.

Decide how voice will reach the assistant

Voice is not one uniform feature across every channel. OpenClaw’s FAQ describes voice through companion apps or nodes and hosted widgets; its repository describes supported companion apps and nodes that can add capabilities such as voice, camera, screen, Canvas, and device-local actions. An n8n example handles Telegram voice messages as part of a workflow. Check current support for the particular client, channel, platform, and version you intend to use.

When planning a voice route, identify each hop: the device or client that captures speech, any service that transcribes or synthesizes it, the gateway or workflow receiving the message, and the service that returns audio. This makes it easier to understand both what the user experience can do and where audio or transcripts may travel. The documented capabilities do not establish that every route works offline or has identical features.

Make memory and tasks explicit

OpenClaw workspace files

OpenClaw’s setup guide places operating instructions and memory in a workspace. Its starter files include AGENTS.md, SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, and USER.md; MEMORY.md is optional. These files give the operator concrete places to define behavior and retain selected information. Treat them as data that needs review and backup, rather than assuming every past conversation is permanently available to the assistant.

OpenClaw’s main-session memory documentation describes curated long-term memory and searchable daily notes, with memory recall across conversations under documented configuration conditions. This is retrieval from maintained files and notes, not unlimited recall or a guarantee that every detail will appear in every prompt. Decide what belongs in durable memory, keep sensitive material out unless necessary, and understand how the configured retrieval works.

Workflow-based tasks and memory

If your priority is task bookkeeping, an n8n template illustrates a more explicit workflow approach: task and subtask tables, scheduled heartbeats, channel triggers, and a memory pipeline that summarizes conversations, creates embeddings, and stores them for retrieval in a Supabase vector database. This is an example architecture, not a required OpenClaw component or a guarantee that its integrations and configuration remain unchanged.

Use this distinction to choose the simplest setup that fits: workspace files and configured recall for an assistant-centered approach, or a workflow engine and structured storage when tasks need explicit records, triggers, or a custom retrieval pipeline. The latter adds systems to configure and maintain.

Set the privacy boundary before adding more features

Self-hosting gives you control over the gateway and the state, memory, and credentials kept on its host. It does not by itself keep all data local: OpenClaw’s repository says prompts go to configured model providers and chat platforms. Its FAQ describes a local-model option, but the documented pages do not establish that every channel, integration, or voice route can work entirely offline.

Before connecting real conversations, map where prompts, credentials, transcripts, workspace files, and task records go. If using a hosted model or messaging service, include it in that map. A local model may reduce the need to send prompts to an external model provider, but check every other service in the route rather than treating “self-hosted” as a blanket privacy guarantee.

OpenClaw describes a shared gateway as a trust domain and recommends separate gateways for users who may be mutually adversarial. Sharing an assistant is therefore not the same as isolating each user’s access. For household or team use, decide who can connect, which tools they can invoke, and whether separate gateways are necessary before sharing it broadly.

Choose the smallest stack that answers your needs

Need Starting point What to decide
Messaging access and an assistant runtime OpenClaw gateway Supported channel, allowed senders, model provider, and tool permissions
A dedicated browser chat Optional Open WebUI integration API frontend or Channels pattern, plus any external services the chosen setup needs
Voice interaction Supported OpenClaw client or node, hosted widget, or a workflow such as the documented n8n example Whether the selected client and channel support the route, and where audio and transcripts are processed
Durable assistant memory OpenClaw workspace files and configured recall What to retain, how to review it, and how to back it up
Structured tasks or custom memory retrieval Workflow engine and task or vector storage, as illustrated by the n8n template Who maintains the workflow, tables, triggers, integrations, and retention policy

There are no controlled comparative tests establishing one of these patterns as fastest, most reliable, or best for every user. A practical sequence is to start with one gateway, one channel, a narrow tool policy, and only the memory you can explain and maintain. Add a browser UI, voice route, or workflow when a specific use case justifies the added configuration and data paths.
