The $250 Agent Challenge is a Collabnix community hackathon inviting developers to build and demonstrate an AI-agent project using Docker Cloud Sandboxes. Docker’s promotion offers eligible new signups a one-time $250 sandbox-compute credit, but the credit is optional: the challenge repository says local entries using the sbx CLI are welcome. Entrants are asked to submit a repeatable build log, a two-minute demo video, and a screenshot of spend.
The dates and offer terms below are those published for the 2026 challenge. Check the challenge repository and Docker’s promotion page for current rules and availability before relying on them.

What is the $250 Agent Challenge?
It is an open online hackathon described by its organizers, the Collabnix community, as a chance to build something real with AI agents and show what an agent can do while you are away from your laptop. The repository frames the prompt as: “What would you build if someone handed you $250 of cloud compute for AI agents?” That is challenge framing, not a measured claim about search interest or a promise that every entrant receives $250.

Participants may enter solo or in teams of up to three. The challenge lists five tracks:
#1 Best Overall
- Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX 4.2GHz (Up To 5.4GHz Turbo) 24 Core
- 256GB DDR5 ECC Reg (4x64GB)
- GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GPU
- 10G + 2.5G Networking + WiFi 7
- Onboard AQtion AQC113C 10GbE LAN
- Night Shift: Make work continue while your laptop is closed.
- No Keys Allowed: Use real APIs without exposing tokens to the agent.
- Tool Master: Use MCP servers.
- The Crew: Run multiple agents in separate sandboxes.
- Kit Maker: Create a kit others can run with one command.
The organizers’ repository says local projects using the sbx CLI are accepted, so claiming Docker’s promotional credit is not presented as a condition of entering.
What the $250 credit covers—and who can claim it
Docker’s promotion page says new Docker Agentic Platform signups from September 22 through October 31, 2026 can receive a one-time $250 compute credit instead of the standard $25 credit. Docker states that the offer is limited to one credit per user and account, requires a valid credit card at signup, is non-transferable, has no cash value, and expires six months after redemption. Docker says the card is charged only for usage beyond the credit, and reserves the ability to modify or end the promotion. The offer is subject to Docker’s terms.
This is a Docker promotion, not a prize or guaranteed cash payment from the hackathon. The credit applies to sandbox compute. Model API usage and agent subscriptions are billed separately by their providers, so the $250 does not necessarily cover every cost of building or running an agent.

How sandbox compute is billed
Docker says sandbox compute is billed by the second, from start to stop. Setup time, idle time, and retries count toward usage. The following compute-only rates and approximate hours per $250 are listed by Docker as current in September 2026; the hours are arithmetic estimates based on those hourly rates, not a guarantee of usable project time.
| Sandbox size | Resources | Docker rate | Approximate hours for $250 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | 1 vCPU, 2 GB | $0.070/hour | 3,570 |
| Small | 2 vCPU, 4 GB | $0.140/hour | 1,785 |
| Medium | 4 vCPU, 8 GB | $0.280/hour | 890 |
| Large | 8 vCPU, 16 GB | $0.560/hour | 445 |
| XL | 16 vCPU, 32 GB | $1.118/hour | 225 |
Docker’s examples say the credit could run four Medium-tier agents in parallel for seven hours a day over thirty days, or support about 3,500 automated fifteen-minute runs. Those are Docker’s illustrative estimates, not independently tested results; they describe sandbox compute only and exclude separately billed model API use and agent subscriptions.
What Docker says a Cloud Sandbox does
Docker describes each sandbox as a cloud microVM with its own kernel. It says each agent gets its own sandbox so installations and tests do not touch one another’s files. Docker’s own wording is: “The sandbox runs in the cloud. Nothing depends on your laptop staying awake.” This is a vendor description, not an independent security assessment; the sources do not establish an independently tested security outcome.

Challenge dates and what to submit
The challenge repository lists this 2026 schedule:
- October 10: Online kickoff and start of the build period.
- October 31: Build period ends; submissions close at 11:59 PM IST.
- November 1–14: Judging and People’s Choice voting.
- November 21: Winners announcement in Bangalore.
The stated submission package is:
- A repeatable build log: a blog post or repository README explaining how to reproduce the project.
- A two-minute demo video: a concise demonstration of the result.
- A screenshot of spend: evidence of the compute usage.
The repository directs entrants to a submission form and mentions GitHub Issues as a backup. It links to separate rules and track briefs; eligibility details, judging criteria, and disqualification rules should be checked there rather than assumed from the README. Confirm the deadline, submission route, and requirements in the challenge materials because dates and rules can change.

Choose based on the project’s runtime and whether you want to sign up for the promotion. Before relying on the credit, estimate total sandbox time—including setup, idle periods, and retries—at the size you expect to use. Also account separately for model API and agent-subscription charges, and consider the credit’s six-month expiry. If you do not want to claim the credit, the challenge repository says local sbx entries are welcome.
