You must supply a probability benchmark, and a flagged price is useful only if it is current and available. This tutorial uses The Odds API as one provider, keeps the scanner read-only, and focuses on the provider’s documented free-tier scope as of its documentation update on 2026-10-06.
What a +EV finder can—and cannot—tell you
A bookmaker’s odds are the price offered for an outcome; they do not establish the outcome’s true probability. A scanner estimates expected return by comparing that price with a probability you provide or derive from a separate benchmark. If the benchmark is poor, the +EV label will be poor too.

This example is an informational price-comparison tool, not a betting recommendation or an automated betting system. The Odds API describes its data as normalized odds from multiple sportsbooks. Its documentation, last updated 2026-10-06, says its free tier covers NFL, NBA, and MLB, with h2h (moneyline) markets only. Coverage, access, and plan terms can change, so confirm the current catalog and your key’s access before building around them: The Odds API documentation.

Get odds data without exposing your key
Create an API key with your chosen provider and keep it in an environment variable. Do not commit it to source control or put it in browser-side code. The code below uses The Odds API’s documented API host and request pattern; its endpoint, parameters, and response schema are provider-specific, so follow the current reference rather than copying a schema from another service.
import os
import requests
API_KEY = os.environ["ODDS_API_KEY"]
BASE_URL = "https://api.the-odds-api.com"
response = requests.get(
f"{BASE_URL}/odds/",
headers={"x-api-key": API_KEY},
params={
"sport_key": "americanfootball_nfl",
"markets": "h2h",
},
timeout=20,
)
response.raise_for_status()
data = response.json()
Set ODDS_API_KEY in the environment where the script runs. The 20-second timeout prevents a stalled request from hanging indefinitely; raise_for_status() makes HTTP errors visible instead of treating an error response as valid odds. Consult the provider’s reference for the exact endpoint and required region parameters for your account.
Do not combine this example with another provider’s URL, headers, or response fields. For instance, the official odds-api.net repository documents a different base URL, authentication header, and schema.

Inspect the response and reject unusable prices
Before calculating anything, confirm the response contains the sport and market you requested. The Odds API’s event data includes start times and bookmaker odds; each row you use should retain enough context to identify exactly what its price refers to.
Normalize each candidate into a record with these fields:
- Event identity and start time, kept in UTC.
- Market key and outcome name.
- Bookmaker name or key and decimal price.
- The price’s observation or update time, when supplied.
Skip rows with missing odds, malformed events, empty markets, suspended or unavailable selections, or no way to establish freshness. If the current reference does not provide an observation timestamp for a price, do not imply that the quote is fresh. The provider’s endpoint reference explains its current response fields and request options: The Odds API reference.

Choose a fair-probability benchmark
Expected value requires a win-probability estimate independent of the price being evaluated. Do not convert a target bookmaker’s own odds into an implied probability and then treat that number as objective truth: that would compare a price with itself, not test whether it is attractive.
Use a documented model estimate
You can supply a probability from your own model, but record how it is produced and validate it separately. A number without a defensible method is not a meaningful edge estimate.

Use a market-derived benchmark cautiously
A comparable market consensus can be a reference if bookmaker margin is removed and the participating prices are sufficiently comparable. The Odds API describes a value endpoint based on a vig-removed, equal-weighted consensus and a fair-odds endpoint with stated scope limits. These are alternative benchmarks, not proof that the consensus predicts outcomes perfectly. Document which benchmark you use and avoid reporting a result when there are too few comparable books.

For decimal odds d, estimated win probability p, and a one-unit stake, expected net return is:
p * (d - 1) - (1 - p)
For a stake of s units, multiply the per-unit result by s. This simple win/loss formula assumes no push, void, tax, or execution effect.

def expected_net_per_unit(decimal_odds: float, win_probability: float) -> float:
return win_probability * (decimal_odds - 1) - (1 - win_probability)
example = expected_net_per_unit(2.10, 0.50)
print(example) # 0.05 units per unit staked
At decimal odds of 2.10 and an estimated 50% win probability, the calculation is 0.50 * 1.10 - 0.50 = 0.05 units per unit staked, or 5% of the stake before other costs. This illustrates the arithmetic; it is not a prediction or a measured betting result. A positive calculation is only as credible as the probability estimate and the price’s continued availability.
Filter and report estimated opportunities
Choose a transparent minimum edge threshold rather than printing every tiny positive result. A small difference may be rounding noise or a stale quote; the threshold is a reporting choice, not evidence that an opportunity is profitable. For each candidate that passes, report:
- Event and UTC start time.
- Bookmaker, market, and outcome.
- Quoted decimal odds and benchmark probability.
- Estimated expected return and the price’s observation time, if available.
Label these rows “estimated opportunities,” not bets to place. For excluded rows, record a reason such as missing probability, unsupported market, unavailable price, or unknown freshness; this makes it possible to distinguish “no qualifying estimate” from “no usable data.”
Keep the scanner read-only and account for uncertainty
The odds API supplies data; it is not a bookmaker and does not place or recommend wagers. Keep the project limited to fetching, comparing, and reporting prices. The official repository for odds-api.net states: “This is a read-only data and tooling package. It does not place bets.” The repository documentation also identifies execution risks that apply to price comparisons generally.
A displayed quote may move, become suspended, or be unavailable when checked. Account limits, void rules, jurisdictional requirements, and execution delays can change what happens after a price is observed. Do not describe a signal as a sure bet or guaranteed profit.
Respect the selected provider’s quota and terms. Quotas, rate-limit behavior, authentication, and data-display rights differ between providers; use the current documentation for the service you actually call. The odds-api.net repository and Odds Data API documentation describe separate products and should not be mixed into this example’s configuration.
