Build a Personal Knowledge Base with Karpathy’s LLM Wiki Pattern

Karpathy’s LLM Wiki is a workflow for turning source material into a persistent, linked Markdown knowledge base. Here’s how to start and what to check.

Karpathy’s LLM Wiki is a way to use an AI agent to turn source material into a persistent, linked knowledge base—not a standalone product or a fixed technical stack. The agent creates and updates Markdown pages that you can inspect, edit, and query later. You can work with a folder of Markdown files or use Obsidian as an optional interface.

What is Karpathy’s LLM Wiki?

It is a workflow for building a personal knowledge base with an LLM agent. You provide source material and instructions; the agent synthesizes that material into linked pages that remain available for future queries. Karpathy’s idea file is meant to be copied into an agent and adapted with it, so page types, naming rules, and maintenance procedures are choices rather than universal requirements. The idea file is described as “A pattern for building personal knowledge bases using LLMs.” (Karpathy’s GitHub Gist listing; the original file is dated April 4, 2026.)

The important feature is that synthesis persists in the wiki pages. In a conventional retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflow, a system retrieves relevant passages from source documents when a question is asked and uses them to generate an answer. With this wiki pattern, an agent first builds a durable, structured artifact from sources, and later questions can draw on it. That difference describes the design rationale; it does not establish that every wiki implementation gives better answers than RAG.

How to set up a basic LLM Wiki

You can begin with plain Markdown files and an agent that can read and write them. Obsidian is one option for editing and browsing those files, not a requirement of the pattern.

  1. Choose where the files will live. Create a dedicated folder for the wiki or use an Obsidian vault. Keep the location and file format accessible to you, so the knowledge base is not trapped in an interface you cannot readily inspect.
  2. Keep source material distinct from generated pages. Preserve the original documents, and put agent-created knowledge pages in a separate area. Decide how each page should point back to its supporting source—using filenames, links, quotations, or another consistent method.
  3. Write the agent’s operating rules. Specify which page types to create, how to name and link them, how to cite sources, how to handle uncertainty or conflicting claims, and which files the agent may change. The instruction file is where you define your own schema; the original pattern does not prescribe one universal format.
  4. Test the workflow on one source. Ask the agent to process a single document, create or update relevant pages, and record source links. Read the result and adjust the instructions before asking it to process a larger collection.
  5. Query and maintain the pages. Try questions that require connections across multiple pages. Inspect the answers and wiki for weak source attribution, contradictions, outdated facts, duplicate pages, and incorrect synthesis. Refine the rules when the same problem recurs.

Using the guided Obsidian plugin

A third-party implementation, the “Karpathy LLM Wiki” Obsidian plugin, provides a more guided setup. Its README describes this flow:

  1. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins → Browse, find “Karpathy LLM Wiki,” install it, and enable it.
  2. Choose an LLM provider. Enter an API key if the selected provider requires one, test the connection, and save the settings.
  3. Ingest a note, then inspect the generated pages and their source links.

The plugin README says the implementation leaves original notes unchanged and writes generated pages under a wiki folder. Those are the maintainer’s statements about that plugin, not guarantees about other tools or independent verification of its behavior. Obsidian itself is an optional editor and graph browser; the underlying pattern can also be implemented directly with Markdown files. (Plugin README; Obsidian.)

What to assess before adding more sources

Implementations can differ substantially, so check the details of the agent, provider, and file workflow you choose before scaling up.

  • Control and setup effort: A direct Markdown workflow gives you control over files and instructions but requires you to define and maintain the process. A plugin may guide setup, while limiting choices to the features it supports.
  • Privacy and data flow: Find out whether source files stay on your device, what text or prompts are sent to a remote model, and how the selected provider handles submitted data. The plugin README describes both local-provider and remote-provider paths; check the current terms for the provider you select.
  • Model cost and capacity: Remote providers may charge for model use, and models vary in how much material they can process at once. Check current provider terms and model limits rather than assuming one cost or context capacity applies to every setup.
  • Format support: Confirm that the workflow can read the file types you plan to use. A Markdown-based wiki does not by itself establish support for every document format.
  • Portability and review: Make sure you can open, correct, back up, and preserve the generated pages outside any vendor-specific interface. Inspect whether the links make it possible to trace claims to original material.

What the available benchmark does—and does not—show

The plugin README reports a benchmark result of PPR @5 = 27.1%, compared with 24.1% for a pure-kNN baseline, on the project’s own corpus. This is an implementation-specific result reported by the project, not an independent comparison of Karpathy’s general wiki pattern with RAG. It does not support a broad claim that an LLM Wiki is more accurate or effective than RAG. (GD4AI project README, undated; accessed 2026.)

Generated pages are still model-produced synthesis, not verified facts. Check important claims against their cited sources, resolve conflicting accounts deliberately, and revisit pages when their source material changes.
