How does Mega Chandelure ex control the board?
The deck’s control-and-damage loop centers on the opponent’s Active Pokémon. As described in the September 2026 tournament analysis, Binding Flame raises that Pokémon’s Retreat Cost by one Colorless Energy, while Phantom Maze deals 130 damage plus 50 more for each Energy in its Retreat Cost. The attack costs two Psychic Energy. Check the in-client card text for the exact current wording and effects.
That creates a practical sequence: increase the Active Pokémon’s retreat burden, then attack to convert that burden into damage. A target that is awkward to retreat can also be difficult for the opponent to rotate out of the Active spot. The plan depends on both effects lining up; it is not simply a high-damage attack that works independently of the opponent’s board.

Where do I start if I want to build Mega Chandelure ex?
Keep the evolution line consistent
Mega Chandelure ex is a Stage 2, so the baseline’s four Litwick, four Lampent, and four Mega Chandelure ex support the central setup. The list also includes two Rare Candy. Since the strategy needs the attacker online before its damage plan can operate, avoid cutting the evolution line or its setup support casually.

Phantom Maze needs two Psychic Energy, and retreating the Active Mega Chandelure ex costs discarding two attached Energy, according to the tournament analysis. Retreating without a plan can therefore disrupt the next attack. When tuning, consider how the list finds, preserves, or recovers the energy it needs, and whether it can maintain pressure if the Active attacker must leave play. Confirm costs in your client before committing to a build.

Treat the catalog list as a starting point, not a fixed recipe
A tournament aggregation published August 11 and updated September 11, 2026, counted 36 lists from 33 tournaments. Ten cards appeared in every list, filling 34 of 60 slots; players used 64 different cards across the remaining 26 slots. Choose flex cards based on the problem you want to solve rather than copying a package by default. The catalog’s Ariados and Spinarak package is one option, not established as the uniquely correct control engine. Evaluate changes against these needs:

- Setup consistency: Can you assemble the Stage 2 attacker and its required energy reliably?
- Disruption: Can you keep a valuable target Active or make it harder for the opponent to escape the retreat-cost pressure?
- Recovery and energy retention: Can you continue attacking after an attacker retreats or is knocked out?
- Alternate attackers and prize management: Can you vary which Pokémon is exposed when the opponent can take three Prizes from a Mega Evolution ex?
- Weakness coverage: Does your choice help against Darkness attackers, or does it leave the deck especially reliant on Mega Chandelure ex?
What beats Mega Chandelure ex?
The clearest structural risks are its Darkness weakness and the prize value of its main attacker. A knockout of Mega Chandelure ex gives the opponent three Prize cards under the Mega Evolution ex rule, so repeatedly exposing it can produce a punishing trade. Consider whether your build can avoid making every turn depend on that one attacker.

Check format legality before playing
For the 2026 Standard rotation, G regulation-mark cards left the format; Pokémon said the Live Standard rotation took effect March 26, 2026. Rotation dates do not by themselves confirm that every card in a community-cataloged list is legal for the format you intend to play. Check the format selector and card legality in the current client before entering an event.
