Build a Local Open Lakehouse: Dremio, MinIO, Nessie, and Iceberg Explained

A practical guide to the roles of Dremio, MinIO, Nessie, Iceberg, and Docker in a laptop-scale open lakehouse, including the tutorial’s sample connections and limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To build a small open lakehouse on a laptop, run Dremio, MinIO, Nessie, and a notebook server in a Docker-based learning environment. MinIO stores the data and Iceberg metadata; Iceberg defines the tables; Nessie tracks catalog references and versions; Dremio connects to the data and runs SQL. This arrangement is a way to see the pieces working together—not a production deployment recipe or a guarantee of compatibility with every current release.

What an open lakehouse is—and what each part does

A lakehouse combines data held in object storage with table and catalog capabilities that make it practical to organize and query. In this example, the components have distinct jobs:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • MinIO: S3-compatible object storage for the underlying files and Iceberg table metadata.
  • Apache Iceberg: An open table format that describes tables over data files. It is not itself a file format like Parquet or CSV.
  • Nessie: The catalog in this tutorial, tracking table references and catalog state with Git-like versioning.
  • Dremio: The SQL query engine and lakehouse layer that connects to the catalog and storage.
  • Docker: Runs the services together locally. A notebook server is an optional interface for interacting with the environment.

The data path is straightforward: files and Iceberg metadata reside in object storage; the catalog records references to tables and their versions; Dremio uses those connections to query data with SQL. The Dremio workshop describes reading and writing Iceberg tables on object storage cataloged by Nessie, creating semantic-layer views, and querying them with Dremio. It frames the exercise with the question, “Want to experience Data Lakehouse architecture?” (Dremio’s laptop workshop).

What you need before starting

The workshop lists Docker as a prerequisite and describes a compose-based environment containing a notebook server, Nessie, MinIO, and Dremio. It does not establish minimum RAM, CPU, or disk requirements. Check the current Docker and Dremio requirements for your operating system before starting; available capacity and the size of the data you choose will affect whether the services run comfortably.

How the tutorial wires the services together

The detailed connection values below come from an older Dremio tutorial, so use them as an illustration of how the components connect—not as a current universal configuration. Docker service names such as minio and nessie resolve inside the tutorial’s Docker network; they are not necessarily reachable under those names from your host machine.

  1. Start the compose-based environment. Follow the workshop’s instructions for its Docker setup. The tutorial includes MinIO, Nessie, Dremio, and a notebook server.
  2. Create the object-storage bucket. In MinIO, create a bucket named warehouse, which the tutorial uses for the lakehouse data.
  3. Open Dremio. The tutorial directs learners to localhost:9047 in a browser.
  4. Add the Nessie source. In Dremio, configure the Nessie endpoint as http://nessie:19120/api/v2, using the service name and port from the tutorial’s Docker network.
  5. Configure the associated storage connection. The tutorial’s sample uses the access key and secret key supplied for its local MinIO setup, root path /warehouse, and these properties:
fs.s3a.path.style.access=true
fs.s3a.endpoint=minio:9000
dremio.s3.compat=true

For its local HTTP example, the tutorial also says to disable the encrypted connection setting. These values are specific to that setup: do not reuse its sample credentials or disable encryption outside a disposable local environment. Service endpoints, credentials, UI labels, and compatibility can differ by release and deployment method, so check the documentation for the versions you actually run.

What you can explore after setup

Once Dremio can reach the Nessie catalog and MinIO storage, the workshop’s learning path is to read and write Iceberg tables, create semantic-layer views, and query the results with SQL. The notebook server offers another way to interact with the environment; it is not the storage layer or the catalog.

The older tutorial says tables in its Nessie-backed setup can also be accessible to other tools that support Nessie catalogs, naming Apache Flink, Apache Spark, Presto, and Trino. That is an interoperability possibility, not a promise that all versions and configurations work together without adjustment.

Catalog, storage, and table format are separate choices

A catalog tells tools where tables are and tracks their metadata references; object storage holds the files. Iceberg supplies the table format. These layers can be selected independently, subject to the integrations supported by the software versions in use.

Choice Local tutorial example Other documented context
Catalog Nessie, used by the tutorial for catalog state and table references. Dremio’s current source documentation lists Open Catalog, powered by Apache Polaris, as well as Iceberg REST Catalog and other catalog integrations. Check the target Dremio release for current support and compatibility.
Object storage MinIO, used locally through S3-compatible settings. Dremio documentation describes object-storage connections including Amazon S3 and Azure Storage, as well as Google Cloud Storage, HDFS, and NAS in its source listings. The available choices depend on product and release.
Data representation Iceberg tables over data and metadata in the object store. Dremio’s object-storage documentation also describes querying files and formats such as Parquet, CSV/TSV, JSON, Excel, and Delta Lake. A queryable file format is not the same thing as a table format.

Dremio’s current documentation describes a platform with coordinators and query engines, client access through its console and interfaces including Arrow Flight, JDBC, ODBC, and REST, and an integrated Iceberg catalog. It describes Open Catalog as built on Apache Polaris and supporting interoperability with Iceberg-compatible engines such as Spark and Flink. That current product context is distinct from the older workshop’s Nessie-based architecture; do not assume they are interchangeable in a particular deployment without checking version-specific support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dremio’s source documentation separates catalog integrations from object-storage sources. Its object-storage documentation discusses storage connections and formats, but does not establish that every listed integration or format behaves identically in the local Docker exercise. Likewise, the loading guide recommends Iceberg tables for performance and scalability in its Dremio Cloud context; its Cloud-specific details should not be assumed to apply to local Dremio.

When this laptop setup is—and is not—the right fit

  • Use it to learn the architecture: The local stack makes the roles of storage, table format, catalog, and SQL engine tangible in one exercise.
  • Use a different storage context for a real environment: MinIO is the tutorial’s local object store. Cloud or organizational deployments may use other supported object-storage integrations and have different operational and security requirements.
  • Choose a catalog for the target ecosystem: Nessie is the tutorial’s choice, while Dremio documents other catalog options. Decide based on the engines and deployment you need to support, then confirm compatibility for the exact versions.
  • Distinguish direct file queries from managed tables: Dremio can query a range of formats, while Iceberg adds table-level metadata and capabilities. Dremio’s loading guidance for Cloud recommends Iceberg, but that guidance is not a universal claim about every local configuration.

Compatibility and safety checks

  • Verify current Dremio, Nessie, MinIO, and Docker compatibility for the releases you plan to run; the historical tutorial is not a current compatibility matrix.
  • Keep tutorial credentials, local HTTP endpoints, and unencrypted settings confined to the isolated demonstration environment.
  • Do not infer hardware minimums from the workshop; it does not state numeric CPU, memory, or disk thresholds.
  • Do not treat Dremio Cloud upload guidance or feature descriptions as proof of identical behavior in a local Docker installation.
