Build a High-Performance Rust CLI: Project Setup, Arguments, and Release Builds

Create a Rust CLI with Cargo, handle program arguments, and understand what an optimized release build does—and does not—tell you about performance.

To build a Rust command-line application, create a binary project with Cargo, read the program’s arguments, and use Cargo’s release profile when preparing an optimized artifact. The Rust Book demonstrates the basic workflow; Cargo’s documentation explains how to pass arguments to the program and how release builds differ from the default development build. Neither documentation promises a specific speedup: measure your own workload before drawing performance conclusions.

Start a Rust CLI project and pass it arguments

The Rust Book’s command-line example starts with a binary project and runs it with a search term and a file path:

cargo new minigrep
cd minigrep
cargo run -- searchstring example-filename.txt

In the example, std::env::args reads the arguments supplied to the program. The Rust Book uses this standard-library approach to introduce command-line input in a small application; it provides a foundation for handling arguments without implying that it covers every need of a larger CLI.

The two hyphens in cargo run -- searchstring example-filename.txt are significant. Cargo passes arguments after -- to the binary being run. Options before the separator belong to Cargo itself. This distinction matters when a program’s own arguments could otherwise be mistaken for Cargo options.

Choose an argument parser to fit the CLI

For a small learning example, reading arguments with std::env::args keeps the mechanism visible. A more feature-rich command may benefit from a dedicated argument parser, especially when it needs structured options or a more ergonomic interface. The available sources identify clap as a topic in a related book’s description, but do not provide a comparative evaluation of parsers or establish which choice performs best.

Make the choice based on the interface your application needs, rather than assuming that one approach is inherently faster. The official introductory example supports basic argument handling; the cited book listing describes additional topics but is retailer-provided copy, not an independent assessment.

Build an optimized release artifact

For a release build, run the program with Cargo’s --release option:

cargo run --release -- searchstring example-filename.txt

The first -- separates Cargo’s options from the program’s arguments. Cargo documents --release as running optimized artifacts, and describes the release profile as intended for optimized artifacts used in releases and production. This is a build-configuration distinction, not a measured guarantee about runtime speed, startup time, or binary size for a particular application.

Compare development and release behavior with representative inputs if performance matters. Record what you measure and under what conditions; no benchmark or universal improvement figure is established by the cited documentation.

The exact title “Mastering Rust: Build a High-Performance CLI Application” was not verified as a published book title. A related listing is for Mastering Systems Programming with Rust: A hands-on guide to building High-Performance CLIs, System Daemons, and Low-Level Libraries by Samuel E. Barnard. Bookshop.org lists its publication date as June 12, 2025, ISBN 9798287780937, and length as 140 pages. The listing describes coverage of a high-performance CLI project, including clap, layered configuration, and efficient I/O streams; these are the retailer’s description of the book, not independently reviewed contents.
