Is there a free Excel tracker to download?
A free downloadable Excel workbook matching this description has not been verified. The tracker identified at Freefincal is described on its current page as a Google Sheet, with paid copy options—not as a free Excel download. Its stated features include fund nicknames, AMFI codes, XIRR, monthly SIP transaction support, date-based NAV lookup and goal analysis. The page cautions that its goal analysis uses simplistic assumptions and is only a ballpark estimate.

If you need a free Excel file, you can make one yourself using the workbook structure and formulas below. This avoids treating a paid Google Sheet as a free Excel download.
Get the correct NAV for each scheme
Net asset value (NAV) is the per-unit market value of a mutual fund. AMFI provides latest NAV and NAV-history resources; SEBI’s curated mutual-fund resources page points investors to AMFI’s latest NAV and history downloads. Start at SEBI’s mutual-fund resources, then use the linked AMFI data tools or visit AMFI’s NAV download page and AMFI’s NAV history page.

A fund house can also publish scheme-specific latest and historical NAV data. For example, HDFC Mutual Fund’s NAV page displays scheme, option, date and rupees per unit. This is an example of a fund-house source, not a fund recommendation.
- Check the exact scheme: A fund family may offer multiple schemes and variants. Record the AMFI scheme code as well as the name.
- Match plan and option: Regular and direct plans, and growth and IDCW options, can have different scheme identities and NAVs. Do not substitute one for another.
- Keep the date: Store the NAV date alongside the number so an older value is not mistaken for the latest one.
NAV is a daily valuation, not an intraday quote. A Microsoft Q&A community response says NAV is calculated once daily after markets close; treat that as a timing pointer rather than an official Microsoft policy statement. Set up the Excel workbook
Use separate sheets for transactions and the holdings summary. Keeping each dated purchase and redemption in a transaction ledger makes the portfolio auditable and supports a transaction-based return calculation.

Transactions sheet
Create columns for scheme name, AMFI scheme code, plan/option, folio or personal nickname, transaction date, transaction type, cash amount and units. Enter each purchase, SIP installment and redemption as its own row. Use consistent transaction-type labels, such as Purchase and Redemption.

Holdings sheet
Create columns for scheme name, AMFI scheme code, plan/option, nickname, units held, latest NAV date, latest NAV, current value and gain/loss. For each holding, bring in the units from the transaction records and enter a dated NAV from AMFI or the fund house. The suggested fields reflect the information needed for this workflow; they are not an official template.

Current value = units held × NAV
For example, if a holding has 100 units and the NAV entered for the chosen date is ₹25, its snapshot value is ₹2,500. This is a valuation at that NAV date, not a live or intraday value.

For a simple holding-level comparison, subtract the amount invested from current value:

Gain or loss = current value − amount invested
This basic figure is not an annualized return and can misrepresent performance when purchases were made on different dates or units were redeemed. Keep the dated cash-flow ledger if you want a return measure that accounts for transaction timing.
Transaction-aware return with XIRR
XIRR calculates an annualized return from cash flows occurring on different dates. Record purchases as money invested and redemptions as money received, each with its transaction date; include the current portfolio value as a final positive cash flow on the valuation date when calculating a continuing holding’s return. The result depends on complete, correctly signed and dated cash flows. A tracker page may advertise XIRR, but that alone does not independently establish that its formulas handle every transaction pattern correctly.

- Obtain a dated NAV: Download or look up the latest available NAV from AMFI or the relevant fund house.
- Match the identity: Verify the scheme code, plan and option against the holding before replacing its NAV.
- Record the NAV date: Update the date and value together, so the workbook shows which valuation it uses.
- Review the ledger: Check that purchases and redemptions are included once, with the correct dates, units and cash amounts.
- Recalculate: Confirm that the holding value changes as expected when units or NAV change, then review any return calculation against the transaction history.
Depending on the source and workbook setup, refreshing may mean importing a downloaded file or copying the value into Excel. Do not label the result “real time”: the cited sources provide NAV data, and the community response describes a once-daily calculation after market close.

These sources offer different routes to NAV data; the information available here does not establish that one is more accurate or faster. Choose based on whether you need broad coverage or a fund-house-specific lookup, and verify the scheme details either way.
What the tracker can—and cannot—tell you
A spreadsheet can organize transactions, value units using a dated NAV and calculate a return from recorded cash flows. It cannot make the NAV intraday, correct missing transaction records automatically or turn a historical return into a forecast. Treat calculations as recordkeeping, not as investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell a fund.
