Decide first what you want the board to measure—task performance, cost-adjusted performance, reliability, or another outcome—then report the trial count and scoring method beside every ranking.
Decide what the board is meant to answer
“Which model is better?” is too broad to score fairly. A comparison should answer a decision that matters in a specific setting: which model completes a defined task more often, produces the best result per dollar, follows a required format more reliably, or performs better across repeated trials?

Choose the outcome before running the comparison. A leaderboard based on raw task performance answers a different question from one that subtracts inference costs. If operating expense affects the choice, show the cost-adjusted metric and explain how it is calculated; do not present it as though it were the same measure as raw performance.

Keep the match conditions comparable
For an interpretable result, give both models the same task, input information, rules, and execution conditions. Record relevant differences in model access or runtime rather than hiding them. If a shared tool, risk engine, or other component affects outcomes, apply it consistently and describe its role so readers can distinguish model decisions from the surrounding system.

A simulated trading comparison published by AI vs the MARKET on June 13, 2026 says its two desks had identical starting stakes, market scans, and live quotes, and used one shared deterministic risk engine. The article describes the then-current desks as starting with $10,000 each; these are simulated amounts, not real capital. It says the matched setup was intended to isolate differences in decision-making, but that is the project’s description, not independent validation that every factor was controlled. The same article notes an earlier $1,000 season, so the figures belong to different periods rather than one continuous stake. AI vs the MARKET, June 13, 2026.
Define the task and scoring rules
Make the challenge concrete enough that another person could understand what a trial involves and why one result earns more credit than another. For interactive tasks, specify the environment, available actions, rules, and accepted output format. A model that makes a strong strategic choice but returns an invalid action may fail for a different reason than a model that follows the format but plays poorly.

- UNO card game provides classic play, where players match colors or numbers in a race to get rid of all their cards!
- Action Cards and Wild Cards add unexpected excitement and game-changing fun, like the Reverse Card that switches the direction of play!
- The deck includes 3 blank Wild Cards for house rules anyone can make up -- erase and create new rules each game!
- When down to one card, players don't want to forget to yell 'UNO!' Keep score and the first player or team to 500 wins!
- The color blind accessible deck has special graphic symbols on each card to help identify its color, allowing players with any form of color blindness to play!
TextArena illustrates this distinction for competitive text games. Its project page and 2025 paper summary describe a framework for evaluating language-model agents in dynamic games, where outcomes can depend on interaction and rule-following. The authors caution that preliminary rankings may reflect both game strategy and understanding of rules or output format. Those findings concern text-game agents; they should not be generalized automatically to ordinary question-answering or other model tasks. TextArena project page and paper summary, 2025.

- Hot or cold. Soft or hard. Wizard or…not a wizard? Work together to decide where your clue falls on the spectrum in this telepathic party game.
- POLYGON: “One of the best party games we’ve ever played.”
- NYT WIRECUTTER: Featured in “The best board games”
- Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
- 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play
- What is one trial, and how many trials were run?
- What outcome is counted as success, and how are partial results or invalid outputs handled?
- Does the board rank raw outcomes, cost-adjusted outcomes, reliability, or a combination?
- What model costs, if any, are included, and how are they priced?
Choose a metric that fits the decision
Use one primary metric that matches the question, then provide useful supporting measures rather than blending unlike results into an unexplained score. For a game, wins or a task-specific outcome may be central; for a cost-sensitive deployment, cost per successful result may matter. Keep the metric definition visible on the board.
TextArena reports using TrueSkill ratings initialized at μ=25 and σ=25/3. Its authors say their system converged faster than Elo, but the paper summary does not give a numeric comparison or a described protocol for that claim. Treat this as the authors’ report, not as a quantified guarantee that TrueSkill is preferable for every board. A rating system designed to compare competitive game results is not interchangeable with a trading board’s cost-adjusted outcome; select and explain the method that fits your task. Show evidence, not just rank
A close leaderboard position or early win rate can overstate what a small set of trials establishes. Display the number of trials alongside the score, and, where the method supports it, include uncertainty or a range. If the sample is small, label the result preliminary rather than presenting a narrow lead as a settled verdict.

Use TextArena when the task is competitive text-game play
TextArena is an open-source collection of competitive text-based games for training and evaluating language-model agents. The project page’s 2025 overview says it includes 57+ environments; that overview count is not a guarantee that every listed environment is fully implemented. The authors’ initial-release counts were 16 single-player, 47 two-player, and 11 multiplayer environments. A footnote reported the collection had grown to 74 games by publication, a differently scoped figure that should not be combined casually with the initial-release categories.
The authors’ 2025 paper reported that the online system had evaluated 283 models, including 64 official models hosted by the platform. These are time-bound project-reported counts from a live leaderboard; submissions can include repeated model variants. The platform targets abilities such as negotiation, persuasion, deception, and theory of mind, but its authors describe these as design targets, not validated measurements of those abilities. TextArena project page and paper summary, 2025.
For a head-to-head, select the same game and rules for both models, preserve the same interaction limits, and log both the game outcome and whether each model obeyed the required format. That separation helps show whether a poor result came from play, rule comprehension, or malformed actions without claiming that a single score diagnoses the cause with certainty.
