Never add up “one second per tick.” Callbacks can arrive late, bunch together, or stop entirely in a background tab. If the clock decides what the display says, those delays only change when the screen updates, not what it shows.
“Zero drift” is best read as “drift-resistant.” Browsers deliberately coarsen timer precision, and sleep behavior differs between browsers and platforms. Below is a working stopwatch, the reasoning behind each choice, and how to pick a clock when your timer has to survive a hidden tab, sleep or reload.
Why interval-counting timers drift
The classic mistake is this:
let seconds = 0;
setInterval(() => { seconds += 1; render(seconds); }, 1000);
It treats every callback as exactly one second. A busy main thread delays callbacks, and the delay accumulates. In hidden tabs, browsers can throttle timers. Chrome’s write-up on its version 88 changes describes timer checks as infrequent as once per second for throttled groups, and once per minute under the intensive-throttling conditions it documents (Chrome for Developers). Those thresholds are Chrome-specific and tied to that article’s version, so don’t treat them as a universal rule. The lesson that does generalize: background callback scheduling is not a dependable clock.
The model: start timestamp plus accumulated time
Keep the source of truth as two values:
- a start timestamp for the current running segment, and
- the duration accumulated before that segment (from earlier pauses).
Elapsed time is always accumulated + (now − start) while running, and just accumulated while paused. Callbacks only trigger a redraw.

Pick the clock: performance.now() for in-page elapsed time
performance.now() is a monotonic clock measured from the page’s time origin. Unlike Date.now(), which is Unix-epoch based, it is not affected by system clock adjustments, so a user changing their clock or an NTP correction can’t make your stopwatch jump or run backwards (MDN: High precision timing).
Pick the scheduler: requestAnimationFrame for visible displays
requestAnimationFrame() schedules your callback before the next repaint, generally following the display refresh rate. It is one-shot, so a running timer must request another frame each time, and most browsers may pause it in background tabs (MDN: requestAnimationFrame()). Chrome’s documentation puts it plainly: “requestAnimationFrame is much better at scheduling animation work than JavaScript timers.” That advice is about animation work, which is what a ticking on-screen readout is.

A complete stopwatch
class Stopwatch {
constructor(onRender) {
this.onRender = onRender;
this.accumulated = 0; // ms from earlier running segments
this.startedAt = null; // performance.now() when current segment began
this.frameId = null;
this.tick = this.tick.bind(this);
}
get elapsed() {
return this.startedAt === null
? this.accumulated
: this.accumulated + (performance.now() - this.startedAt);
}
start() {
if (this.startedAt !== null) return;
this.startedAt = performance.now();
this.frameId = requestAnimationFrame(this.tick);
}
tick() {
this.onRender(this.elapsed);
this.frameId = requestAnimationFrame(this.tick); // one-shot: ask again
}
pause() {
if (this.startedAt === null) return;
this.accumulated = this.elapsed;
this.startedAt = null;
cancelAnimationFrame(this.frameId);
this.frameId = null;
this.onRender(this.accumulated);
}
reset() {
cancelAnimationFrame(this.frameId);
this.frameId = null;
this.accumulated = 0;
this.startedAt = null;
this.onRender(0);
}
}
const fmt = ms => {
const t = Math.floor(ms / 10); // centiseconds
const cs = String(t % 100).padStart(2, "0");
const s = String(Math.floor(t / 100) % 60).padStart(2, "0");
const m = String(Math.floor(t / 6000)).padStart(2, "0");
return `${m}:${s}.${cs}`;
};
const out = document.querySelector("#display");
const sw = new Stopwatch(ms => { out.textContent = fmt(ms); });
What each method does
- start: records
performance.now()and begins the frame loop. Calling it twice is ignored. - tick: computes elapsed time from the clock, renders it, then requests the next frame.
- pause: folds the running segment into
accumulatedand cancels the pending frame. - resume: just call
start()again; the new start point plusaccumulatedgives a continuous value. - reset: clears both the stored time and the scheduled frame.
Note that the loop never counts frames or adds a nominal step. Skipped frames cost nothing in accuracy.
What happens in a background tab
When the page is hidden, frames may stop. Your startedAt is untouched, so the first frame after the tab returns calls elapsed and shows the correct value immediately. There is no need to replay missed callbacks. To refresh instantly on return rather than waiting for the next frame, you can listen for the visibilitychange event and call onRender(sw.elapsed) when document.visibilityState is "visible".

If you need something to happen while hidden (an alarm, say), a display loop is the wrong tool. Schedule that separately against a deadline and expect browser throttling, as above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits you should state honestly
- Precision is intentionally reduced.
performance.now()returns fractional milliseconds, but browsers may coarsen them for security and privacy. Don’t promise sub-millisecond accuracy (MDN: Performance.now()). - Sleep behavior varies. The specification calls for
performance.now()to keep ticking through system sleep or browser freezes, but MDN reports that observed behavior differs across browsers and platforms. For long operations where high precision matters less, MDN suggestsDate.now()may be more useful. - Display refresh is not the clock. The screen updates at the frame rate; the value shown is computed independently at that moment.
The requestAnimationFrame callback also receives its own timestamp. It’s fine for frame-relative animation math, but MDN warns that mixing it with an independently read performance.now() doesn’t reliably synchronize animation callbacks. In a stopwatch, pick one source (here, performance.now() everywhere) and stay consistent.

Choosing timer semantics: monotonic or wall-clock?
| Question | Monotonic (performance.now()) |
Wall-clock (Date.now()) |
|---|---|---|
| Continues through hidden tab? | Yes, computed on demand | Yes, computed on demand |
| Continues through OS sleep? | Varies by browser and platform | Yes, wall time advances |
| Survives page reload or restart? | No, origin resets with the page | Yes, if you persist the timestamp |
| Immune to user/system clock changes? | Yes | No, can jump or reverse |
| Best for | Foreground stopwatch, interaction timing | Deadlines, persisted or long-running timers |
For a deadline or persisted timer, store the epoch timestamp (for example in localStorage), compute Date.now() - savedStart on load, and decide what you want if the clock moves backwards, such as clamping at zero. Define this behavior as a product choice rather than discovering it in a bug report.
