A seven-year battery life is a design target, not a demonstrated result for the discreet Apple Home sensor described by the available project evidence. You can use a DIY Matter-over-Thread build as a starting point, but its published measurements are bench readings from a Home Assistant project—not proof of direct Apple Home operation or seven years of runtime. Reaching that target requires choosing a sensing job and radio path, budgeting the complete device’s power, and validating it under realistic conditions.
What “seven years” means for this build
Seven years of operation is not established for a discreet Apple Home sensor in the sources cited here. Treat it as a goal until a particular device has been tested in its intended configuration over a meaningful period. A sleep-current specification or a brief bench reading cannot establish field life: sensing events, radio check-ins, retries, temperature, battery self-discharge, and usable capacity all affect the result.

The practical design question is not simply which low-power board to buy. It is how often the complete accessory wakes, senses, communicates, and returns to sleep—and whether it can do so reliably while paired to the intended home platform.

Choose the sensing job before the electronics
Decide what the sensor must detect. A door or window contact sensor, motion detector, presence sensor, temperature monitor, and leak detector have different sensing hardware and wake patterns. Those choices shape the power budget: frequent measurements or reports, active sensing, and repeated radio activity can all increase consumption.

Requires a secured 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for Hub M2/M1S/E1/M1S Gen2 and Camera Hub G2H Pro/G2H, and 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi for Camera Hub G3.(Wired connection via Ethernet RJ45 for Hub M2 is also supported.) The Motion Sensor P1 is compatible with Aqara Home, HomeKit, Alexa, IFTTT, Home Assistant. (*Note: No light sensitivity function in HomeKit and Alexa; Please update hub firmware for optimal use.)
- [5-Year Battery Life] The Zigbee motion sensor boasts an impressive five-year battery life, maintaining reliable performance even in low temperatures or with lightning-fast detection timeouts. The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 dimensions are 1.46"D x 2.17"W x 2.76"H.
- [Configurable Detection Timeout] Easily adjust the Aqara motion sensor timeout without any hardware modifications. Through the Aqara Home app, configure the timeout from 1 to 200 seconds to save energy or capture every movement promptly. Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
- [Adjustable Viewing Angle & Detection Distance] Experience a wide detection range with a 170° field of view up to 4 meters and 150° up to 7 meters. The flexible 360° stand makes it easy to adjust the angle, so the motion sensor only triggers when needed. Choose from three sensitivity levels (high, medium, low) to fine-tune detection distance based on your setup. For a stable connection, ensure the motion sensor is placed within 393 inches (10 meters) of the Aqara Zigbee Hub.
- [Alert System and Home Automations] Set up the Aqara Home Alert System or integrate it with HomeKit and other supported systems for continuous monitoring and local sound, light alarms, and cloud notifications upon motion detection. The Zigbee motion detector seamlessly integrates into smart home automations. Easily configure "IF" and "THEN" smart automations, such as turning on lights via Aqara Smart Wall Switch or powering devices with the Aqara Smart Plug.
Also decide where it will be placed. A discreet enclosure may constrain battery size, antenna placement, sensor exposure, and access for battery replacement. Do not choose a battery or enclosure based on a runtime goal before accounting for the actual sensor and reporting behavior.

Matter over Thread
A Matter-over-Thread accessory needs a Thread-capable design and a working Thread network. Home Assistant’s HomeKit Device documentation says HomeKit-over-Thread setup requires a Thread border router and gives Apple devices such as HomePod mini as an example. Confirm that the home has suitable Thread infrastructure before building around this route.

Compatibility is more than a board or sensor module
Apple’s accessory guidance is aimed at accessory manufacturers and system-on-chip providers. Its stated purpose is to help ensure implementations interoperate and work reliably when paired with Apple Home. A compatible chip, a working sensor reading, or the presence of Matter code alone does not establish that a custom accessory is ready for Apple Home. Pairing and interoperability must be checked for the exact firmware and hardware combination.
Apple’s Matter accessory interoperability guidance, dated October 7, 2025, frames compatibility as an implementation and reliability task. Treat successful commissioning and reliable operation with the intended Apple Home setup as acceptance criteria—not assumptions based on the development board.

Use the DIY project as a reference, not a battery-life proof
The open-source homecadia project documents an ESP32-C6, Matter over Thread, a sensor, an e-paper display, and bench power measurements. The author reports 125 µA in a paired-and-settled state and 19.7 µA in unpaired deep sleep. These are project-specific bench figures, not a runtime measurement for another build.
The project author describes the unit as bench-verified and says it is not yet a finished assembled device. Its commissioning is to Home Assistant; the documentation does not demonstrate direct Apple Home operation or seven-year battery life. The example is useful for seeing the implementation and measurement detail a build requires, but it does not validate the title’s target.

- [Native Matter Support over Thread] The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 seamlessly integrates with Matter, ensuring broad compatibility with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa. Built on the Thread protocol, it delivers fast, reliable, and low-power performance. With Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup (FFS), it quickly connects to your home network via Echo devices. (**Note: 2-in-1 Matter Controller & Thread Border Router is required and sold separately)
- [2-in-1 Sensor] The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 combines a PIR motion sensor with a separate light sensor, enabling smart automations like adjusting lights or curtains based on motion or brightness. Unlike the P1, the light sensor in P2 can function independently. It supports Matter for wider compatibility. (*Note: Alexa does NOT support light sensor functionality.) For a stable connection, ensure the motion and light Sensor P2 between the hub is no more than 6 meters(19 feet).
- [Wide Viewing Angle & Detection Range] The P2 sensor can detect movement across a wider area range of up to 7 meters/23 feet, at an angle of up to 170° horizontally, and 45° vertically. The data is from laboratory testing, conducted in a 25 °C / 77 °F environment. It also comes with a versatile 360° stand, that allows you to easily adjust the viewing angle, and it can only trigger the sensor when it’s needed. The detection angle and the sensitivity may vary depending on the ambient temperature and the distance. The device comes with medium sensitivity by default, but you can set the various sensitivity levels on the Aqara Home APP later according to seasonal changes or needs.
- [Energy Saving & Alert System] You can integrate the Motion and Light Sensor P2 with your smart home ecosystem to enable advanced automations and energy efficiency. Imagine how fun it can be! You’ll be able to schedule different automations based on the brightness in the room to achieve circadian lighting and ambient control. Moreover, the automations are executed without the cloud, which can protect the user’s privacy and will keep working even if there is no internet connection.
- [Easy to Install & Long Battery Life] Thanks to its compact wireless design and adjustable stand, the Sensor P2 can easily be installed on a wall, ceiling or a particular zone, and set up with ease. The Motion Detector and Light Sensor P2 has a powerful 2*CR2450 Lithium battery and provides up to 2 years of power for round-the-clock security, one of the longest battery life among Matter over Thread sensors. For best performance, keep a clear distance of 1.5 to 2 meters from infrared devices.
Build a power budget around the complete device
Estimate runtime from usable battery capacity and average current across the device’s actual operating cycle. Include the sensor, processor, radio, regulator and other components—not just a microcontroller’s advertised sleep current. The estimate is only as useful as its assumptions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Battery: identify the battery chemistry and rated capacity, then account for the capacity realistically usable before the device reaches its low-voltage cutoff.
- Sleep and wake periods: measure how long the complete device spends in each state and how much current it draws there.
- Sensing and reporting: include sensing frequency, event frequency, reporting interval, and the energy used to transmit each report.
- Radio behavior: account for check-ins, network conditions, commissioning or reconnection activity, and retries rather than assuming every transmission succeeds immediately.
- Operating conditions: allow for self-discharge, temperature, and a low-battery reserve. A calculation that consumes the battery’s entire nominal capacity leaves no margin for real use.
A basic first estimate is usable battery capacity divided by average current. Keep units consistent and make clear that the result is a projection based on the measured or assumed duty cycle—not a field-life guarantee. Measure the complete prototype in its intended paired operating mode, under representative sensing and radio activity, and compare real consumption with the estimate over time.

Compare a custom build with finished sensors carefully
Ready-made products give a useful sense of the runtime claims currently available, but their maximums are manufacturer claims for specific products and conditions. They are not independent measurements and cannot be directly compared with a prototype’s bench current.
| Option | Sensing and Apple Home route | Battery and stated life | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 | PIR and mmWave presence sensing, plus temperature, light, and humidity; the maker says it works with Apple Home via Matter in Thread mode. | Two CR2450 cells; manufacturer claim of up to two years on Thread. Aqara says battery life varies with settings and use. | A product-page maximum, not an independently verified runtime. |
| GL.iNet LWR02 | Presence, motion, temperature, humidity, and ambient-light sensing; the maker states Matter over Thread compatibility with Apple Home. | Two AAA batteries; manufacturer claim of up to two years. | A product-page claim, not an independently verified runtime. |
| homecadia DIY project | ESP32-C6, Matter over Thread, sensor, and e-paper display; project commissioning is documented to Home Assistant. | Bench readings reported by the author: 125 µA paired and settled, and 19.7 µA in unpaired deep sleep. | The author says the unit is bench-verified, not a finished assembled device. The figures do not demonstrate seven-year life or direct Apple Home operation. |
For the finished products, verify current availability, platform behavior, and the conditions attached to the manufacturer’s claims before relying on them. Their listed sensing functions also differ, so runtime alone does not make them equivalent choices.
Commission and test before relying on the sensor
- Confirm the home network path. For a Thread design, establish that a suitable Thread border router is present and that the intended Apple Home setup can use the accessory’s Matter implementation.
- Commission the exact build. Pair the assembled hardware and firmware with the intended platform; verify that the accessory appears and reports the correct sensor events.
- Exercise normal and difficult conditions. Test expected event frequency, routine reporting, connectivity interruptions, and recovery. Observe whether retries or reconnects materially change consumption.
- Measure in the paired operating state. Record current across sleep, sensing, transmission, and recovery states. A deep-sleep figure by itself omits much of the operating cycle.
- Track battery use over time. Compare observed consumption with the estimate and revise the projected life when real operation diverges from assumptions. Do not publish the projection as a achieved runtime.
Understand the security boundary
Apple’s HomeKit communication security documentation describes commands as end-to-end encrypted and authenticated from a user’s device to the home hub, then forwarded to the accessory through HAP or Matter. That is a description of the platform’s communication model, not a security assessment of a custom sensor, its firmware, or its implementation.
