Buffer vs. Metricool: Which Social Media Tool Fits Your Workflow?

Buffer favors simple publishing and per-channel pricing; Metricool adds competitor tracking, client reporting, and ad-management workflows. Compare their limits and plans against the accounts you manage.

Buffer is the simpler fit for publishing across a small or changing set of channels; Metricool is the stronger fit when competitor tracking, client reporting, or ad management matters. Neither is universally better. The practical choice depends on how many channels or brands you manage and which features your plan must include.

Can you manage your accounts for free?

Yes, but the free plans use different limits, so their headline post counts are not directly comparable.

Free plan What it includes Important limit
Buffer One user and up to three connected channels Up to 10 scheduled posts per channel at one time. A slot reopens after a post publishes.
Metricool One brand, up to 20 posts per month, and 30 days of analytics LinkedIn and X/Twitter connections are excluded.

Buffer’s limit is a queue capacity per channel, while Metricool’s is a monthly allowance per brand. A channel and a brand are not interchangeable billing units, so map your actual accounts to each service’s definition before deciding whether free access is enough. Metricool describes its free offer as having no credit card requirement; that is vendor promotional language, not an independent assessment.

What does each service cost as your account grows?

The figures below are USD and were checked October 8, 2026. Metricool displays prices according to locale and says listed prices exclude applicable VAT. Buffer says its prices were last updated in November 2025 and that annual billing saves 20%. Confirm the displayed price and features for your location before subscribing.

Tier Buffer Metricool
Entry paid Essentials: $5 per channel/month with annual billing ($60 per channel/year); Buffer’s comparison lists $6 per channel/month for monthly billing. Starter: from $25/month for up to 5 brands; a 10-brand option is $45/month.
Team or agency Team: $10 per channel/month with annual billing ($120 per channel/year); Buffer’s comparison lists $12 per channel/month for monthly billing. Includes unlimited users, approval workflows, and custom permissions. Advanced: from $67/month for 15 brands; $107 for 25 brands and $210 for 50 brands. Includes team/client management, roles, approvals, customizable reports, Data Studio connector, and API.
Billing unit Connected channel; total rises with the number of channels. Brand count; X/Twitter is a paid add-on.

Buffer’s paid “unlimited” scheduling is subject to a fair-use cap of 5,000 posts per channel. Metricool also subjects paid unlimited publishing to its fair-use policy. These plans are therefore not unlimited in an absolute sense.

For an agency or multi-brand team, calculate the total using the exact channels or brands you need, then account for add-ons and collaborators. A blanket claim that one is cheaper is misleading when the services charge by different units.

How do their publishing and analytics differ?

Publishing workflow

Both services schedule and publish social content. Buffer’s channel-based model can suit creators or small teams whose account list changes over time. Metricool Starter allows unlimited publishing subject to its fair-use policy, but its free plan is limited to 20 posts a month per brand.

Analytics and reporting

Buffer provides post, channel, and follower analytics, along with AI-powered takeaways, according to its vendor-authored comparison. Metricool emphasizes platform-level reporting and longer analytics history on paid plans. Some of its advanced analytics functions require an add-on, so verify whether the specific report you need is included in your intended plan.

For client-facing reporting, Metricool Advanced adds customizable reports and a Data Studio connector. Buffer Team is more focused on collaboration tools such as approvals and permissions; the cited comparison does not describe an equivalent set of report customization features for that tier.

Can they track competitors, manage teams, and handle comments?

Competitor monitoring

Metricool documents five competitor profiles on Free and up to 100 on Starter. Buffer does not offer competitor tracking, according to Buffer’s comparison. If competitive benchmarking is a core requirement, this is a meaningful distinction rather than a minor plan detail.

Team access and approvals

Buffer Team includes unlimited users, approval workflows, and custom permissions. Metricool places team and client management, roles, approvals, and customizable report templates in Advanced. Teams should check the specific permission and approval workflow they need rather than comparing plan names alone.

Inbox and AI features

Buffer lists a Community inbox and AI Assistant across plans. Buffer’s comparison says Metricool offers inbox access on paid plans for comments and direct messages, and that AI generation is credit-limited by plan. Check each service’s current channel support matrix before relying on inbox coverage or an AI allowance for a particular account.

Which platforms and advertising workflows are supported?

Buffer’s comparison says it supports 12 platforms, including Substack, Mastodon, and Instagram personal profiles; it says Metricool supports 11, including Twitch. Metricool’s X/Twitter connection is a paid add-on. Platform totals and supported account types can change, so verify that your particular network and profile type are supported before selecting a plan.

For advertising, Buffer’s comparison says Metricool has native management for Meta, Google, and TikTok ads, while Buffer does not offer ad management. Choose based on the advertising workflow you actually use, and confirm current platform coverage with the service.

Which is the right one for you?

Choose Buffer when…

  • You want a straightforward publishing and comment workflow.
  • Your channel count is modest or changes as clients and projects come and go.
  • You value per-channel pricing and want to estimate cost against the channels you actively operate.
  • You need API access on a free plan, or want unlimited users, approvals, and custom permissions on Team.

Choose Metricool when…

  • Competitor analysis is important to your social workflow.
  • You manage several brands or prepare reports for clients and stakeholders.
  • You need the advertising-management features described for Meta, Google, and TikTok.
  • You are prepared to check whether the relevant capability requires Starter, Advanced, the X add-on, or the Advanced Analytics add-on.

Before committing, verify account permissions, approval flows, reporting exports, publishing support for your networks, and the total plan cost for your real account mix. Buffer’s own comparison is vendor-authored, as is Metricool’s comparison; feature and platform claims can change as each product evolves.
