Buffer is the stronger starting point if you want per-channel pricing, broad listed platform coverage, or basic analytics on a free plan. Later is a better initial fit if visual planning, an Instagram grid preview, and bundled Social Sets matter more. Compare the plans against the accounts, users, publishing formats, and analytics you actually need: platform availability does not guarantee identical features on every account type.
How Buffer and Later differ
The central difference is how each tool organizes the work. Buffer bills paid plans by connected social channel and presents itself around flexible cross-platform publishing. Later organizes paid plans around Social Sets—bundles of profiles across supported platforms—and emphasizes visual scheduling. Buffer describes this distinction as its own positioning, not an independent test: Buffer’s comparison of the services.

That difference affects both cost and daily workflow. A Social Set may suit a team managing one profile on several networks; per-channel billing may be easier to calculate when the number of connected accounts varies. In either case, check the exact plan total for your profiles and team rather than comparing headline starting prices alone.

Plans and pricing: compare the billing unit, not just the sticker price
The prices below are vendor-listed figures in Buffer’s comparison materials checked October 8, 2026. They can change; verify the current price, currency, billing period, and included seats or Social Sets before subscribing.

Buffer defines a channel as one connected account, such as a single Instagram profile or Facebook page. Later’s Social Set can include up to one profile from each supported platform: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Snapchat. These are different billing units, so there is no like-for-like “cheapest” plan without knowing how many profiles and users you need.
Later’s plan-selection documentation says its current Starter, Growth, and Scale plans began on or after July 1, 2025. Older accounts on legacy plans may have different availability and entitlements. For plan specifics, consult Later’s plan-selection guide and Later’s plan-availability guide. Buffer’s plan descriptions and pricing basis are also covered in its pricing and plan help article and pricing page.

What the free plans are good for
Buffer Free
Buffer’s comparison lists up to three connected channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel. It includes basic analytics, making it a more useful trial for someone who wants to review performance without first moving to a paid plan. If you publish frequently, the scheduled-post cap may be the limiting factor.
Later Free
Later lists up to eight channels, with one profile per supported platform, limited post scheduling, a Link in Bio page, introductory analytics, and a calendar view spanning two weeks before and after the present. The higher channel count does not mean unlimited scheduling or access to the full paid feature set.
Rank #3
For either service, decide whether the free tier covers your expected posting volume and whether the metrics you need are actually included. Later reserves most platform analytics for paid plans, while Link in Bio analytics are available across its plans with plan-dependent features.
Supported platforms and publishing limits
Buffer’s comparison lists Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Google Business, Substack, Mastodon, Start Page, YouTube Shorts, Threads, and Bluesky. Later lists Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts, and Snapchat. Treat these as platform lists, not guarantees that every publishing mode or analytics feature works for every account.
Rank #4
For example, Buffer’s channel-support documentation notes that publishing to some Instagram personal accounts, TikTok accounts, and Facebook groups uses notification publishing; channel analytics and community features also vary. Later’s documentation specifies that Instagram auto-publishing requires a business or creator profile; Instagram carousels and Stories are limited to current paid plans; Threads publishing is desktop/iOS only; Snapchat publishing is desktop only; and free YouTube Shorts publishing is limited to one per month. Confirm the exact workflow and account type you use in Buffer’s plan and feature information, Buffer’s current plan page, and Later’s plan guide.
Analytics, planning, and collaboration
Analytics
Buffer includes basic analytics on Free and advanced analytics on paid plans. Later’s platform analytics are mostly paid-plan features: Starter includes three months for listed platforms, and Growth includes one year. Later also provides Link in Bio analytics across plans, though the available features vary. If reporting is central to your workflow, compare the channels covered, history available, and export or reporting functions—not merely whether a plan says “analytics.”
Best Value
Visual planning
Later’s visual-first workflow includes a drag-and-drop calendar and Instagram grid preview, which can help when sequencing image-led posts. Buffer offers a planning hub across plans and focuses on scheduling across channels. Choose based on whether seeing the visual feed is essential or whether you primarily need a flexible publishing calendar.
Team workflows
Buffer’s comparison says its Team plan includes unlimited team members. Later’s Growth and Scale plans offer more collaboration tools than Starter, with user counts dependent on plan; Growth is listed with two users and approval workflows. Check seats, approval steps, access controls, and inbox requirements against the current plan before moving a team workflow into either product.
Additional workflow features to check
Buffer’s pricing page describes features including a Start Page, link shortening, first-comment scheduling, channel groups, hashtag management, and comment replies. Availability depends on plan and channel. Later offers Link in Bio on its plans; items such as bannerless pages, custom UTM parameters, and analytics history vary by plan. If one of these features is a deciding factor, verify its entitlement and channel compatibility rather than assuming it comes with every tier.
Which one should you choose?
- Start with Buffer if you want per-channel paid pricing, listed support for platforms such as Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business, or Substack, or basic analytics while using a free plan.
- Start with Later if an Instagram grid preview and visual calendar are central to planning, or if the Social Set bundle maps neatly to your profiles and you need its paid collaboration workflow.
- Compare both plan totals if your account count, team size, or posting volume makes the headline price misleading. Count each Buffer channel; count the Social Sets and users needed on Later.
- Test the exact publishing path for important accounts and formats, especially where a platform requires notification-based publishing or restricts a feature by plan, device, or account type.
Neither vendor’s published comparison establishes that its tool produces better reach, engagement, or revenue. Choose on workflow fit, supported account types, plan entitlements, and total cost for your setup.
