Yes—Bubble can generate invoices, certificates, reports, contracts and other files. The practical choice is between installing a document-generation plugin and connecting an external document service through Bubble’s API Connector. Choose based on how the document is laid out, where data is processed, how the file is delivered, and whether you need web or native-mobile support.

Start with the document and delivery path

Before installing anything, define the output and what should happen after generation. A receipt might be downloaded immediately, while an invoice may need to be stored on an order, emailed to a customer and available again from an admin screen.

  • Document: invoice, report, certificate, contract, receipt, catalog or another business file.
  • Source data: Bubble database fields, repeating-group rows, calculated totals, images and user-entered values.
  • Output: PDF, a file URL, an attachment on a Bubble record, an email attachment or a downstream workflow.
  • Privacy: who may generate the file, who may open it and how long the provider or Bubble storage retains it.

These decisions determine whether a text generator, Bubble-page renderer, element-capture tool or external API is the right fit.

Choose a rendering model

Plain-text server-side generation

A text-first generator is the simplest route for paragraphs, basic line breaks and straightforward invoices. The Marketplace pdf-generator listing says the PDF is built in the Bubble server runtime, without an external API call. Its checked 2026 listing showed a $5 one-time price, paper size, orientation, font size and margin controls, and a Bubble file URL returned to the app.

There is an important script limitation: the listing says version 1 renders Latin-script characters only with Helvetica; Unicode font embedding for Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Arabic is planned for version 2. Verify the current listing and your required languages before committing.

Bubble-page rendering

With a page-rendering plugin such as SnapPDF, you design the document as a Bubble page, bind it to live Bubble data and ask the plugin to render it server-side. The listing says it works with workflows and the database, respects Bubble privacy settings and supports single or bulk generation. This is a good match for branded layouts that already exist as Bubble UI.

Element capture

PDF Creator focuses on capturing one or more Bubble elements. Its listing describes repeating groups across multiple pages, headers and footers, database saving, private files, email delivery and right-to-left script support. Use this model when visual control, long tables or RTL output matters more than a text-only template.

Native mobile generation

PDF Generator for Bubble Mobile is aimed at Bubble’s mobile editor rather than a normal web page. The listing advertises styled text, images, logos, QR codes, tables, watermarks, headers, footers and completion events, with use cases including invoices, receipts, reports, certificates, contracts and catalogs. The checked 2026 listing showed $50 one time or $5 per month. Confirm current pricing and mobile-runtime compatibility before deployment.

External document API

An external API is useful when you need template filling, merging, splitting, compression, conversion, watermarks, provider-specific storage or a document pipeline outside Bubble. The PDF API (DO & DIE) / MyPowerly listing describes those capabilities, including backend workflows and secure storage. Treat the provider’s availability, authentication, data residency, retention and usage pricing as questions to resolve with that vendor.

Use Bubble’s API Connector when you need direct control

Bubble’s documentation describes the API Connector as a way to set up “outbound API calls” from your app to a third-party system. A configured call can be exposed as a data source or as an action in a workflow. This is the flexible option when no plugin matches your provider or when you want to control every request and response.

Configure the call

  1. Install the API Connector plugin from Bubble’s Plugins area.
  2. Create a new API, name it for the document service and choose the service’s HTTP method and endpoint.
  3. Add authentication in the form required by the service: API key, header, basic authentication, OAuth, JWT or another documented method.
  4. Add URL parameters, headers and a JSON or form body. Mark secrets as private so they are not exposed to browser users.
  5. Use a sandbox or non-destructive endpoint for initialization whenever the provider offers one.
  6. Click Initialize call. Bubble sends a real request and reads the response so it can understand the returned structure. Because this is a live request, do not initialize against an endpoint that creates a billable document, sends an email or mutates production data unless you intentionally want that side effect.
  7. After initialization, expose the call as a workflow action or data source, map Bubble values into its parameters and test with representative records.

Example request mapping

Suppose your service accepts a template identifier, recipient details and line items. Map the fields explicitly rather than sending an entire database object:

  • template_id: the provider template selected for the document type.
  • customer_name and customer_email: values from the order’s customer.
  • invoice_number, issue_date and currency: fields from the invoice record.
  • items: a JSON array built from the repeating group, with description, quantity, unit price and tax.
  • callback_url: a backend endpoint if the provider completes jobs asynchronously.

Keep totals authoritative. Either calculate them once in Bubble and send the stored values, or let the provider calculate them consistently; do not display one total while storing another.

Trigger generation and deliver the file

Workflow action

Add the plugin action or API Connector action to a button, backend workflow or scheduled workflow. Disable duplicate clicks, use a status such as Queued, Ready or Failed, and save the returned file URL or job identifier on the relevant database record.

Download and display

For a synchronous response, bind the returned file to a download link or file viewer. Check whether the URL is public, signed or session-protected. If the URL can be guessed or remains valid indefinitely, do not use it for confidential documents without an access-control layer.

Email and database storage

Attach the generated file to the email workflow only after generation succeeds. Save a reference on the invoice, including generation time and status, so users can retrieve the exact file that was sent. If a provider stores the file, document its retention policy; if Bubble stores it, apply privacy rules to both the record and the file URL.

Asynchronous and bulk jobs

For large reports or many invoices, use a backend workflow or the provider’s asynchronous job endpoint. Store the job ID, receive a signed webhook where supported, verify that webhook before changing the document status, and retry only idempotent operations. A bulk feature is useful only if you also plan for partial failures and a way to re-run one record.

Privacy, security and compliance checklist

  • Apply Bubble privacy rules to every record used by the generation workflow.
  • Keep API keys and provider credentials server-side; never put secret values in browser-visible parameters.
  • Send only fields the document requires. Avoid passing an entire user or payment object.
  • Confirm whether the provider logs request bodies, stores generated files or transfers data across regions.
  • Use private or signed links for invoices, contracts and personally identifiable information.
  • Decide how to revoke access and delete obsolete files.
  • Log who generated a document and which record/version supplied its data.

Troubleshooting common failures

Initialization fails

Check the endpoint, method, required headers and body format. If initialization triggers a side effect, switch to a sandbox or a harmless test template. Inspect the raw response for authentication errors, rate limits and malformed JSON.

The call is not available in workflows

Return to the API Connector and confirm the call is configured for use as an action rather than only as a data source. Reinitialize after changing the response shape.

Blank or incomplete pages

Page-rendering tools may capture before dynamic data or images finish loading. Add an explicit ready condition, wait for the repeating group to contain rows, and test with the same privacy context used in production.

Missing characters or broken RTL text

Confirm the selected tool embeds the required fonts and supports your script. The listed pdf-generator v1 is Latin-only; choose a renderer with the necessary Unicode or RTL support and test Arabic, CJK and accented names as real data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating groups split badly

Use a tool that explicitly supports multi-page repeating groups, constrain row heights, reserve space for headers and footers, and test unusually long descriptions rather than only short sample rows.

Duplicate documents or emails

Disable repeat clicks, persist an idempotency key or document status, and separate “request accepted” from “file ready.” Retry only when you can prove the previous request did not complete.

Users can open another customer’s file

Do not rely on an obscured URL. Re-check ownership in the page workflow, use private files or signed links, and ensure the provider’s access policy matches Bubble’s privacy rules.

Performance and cost decisions

One-off text documents are usually simpler than rendering a full Bubble page. Bulk jobs reduce workflow overhead but require queueing, rate-limit handling and partial-failure recovery. Plugin prices are not comparable to external API charges: a one-time Marketplace fee may still leave you with provider, storage or infrastructure costs. Measure generation time and failure behavior with your largest realistic document, not a two-line sample.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep templates stable, avoid loading unnecessary images, and generate on the backend when the user does not need to wait. Cache an immutable document only when the underlying data and access policy permit it; regenerate after material changes.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a PDF invoice engine, but it can be useful when your Bubble workflow needs a clean image of a rendered page or element. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG or WebP. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Use the API after your Bubble page is publicly reachable or otherwise configured for the required headers and cookies. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport controls, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture and a usage API. Every feature is on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can Bubble generate a PDF without an external service?

Yes. A server-side plugin such as the listed pdf-generator builds the file in Bubble’s server runtime. Its listed v1 supports Latin characters only, so language requirements must be checked first.

Should I use a plugin or the API Connector?

Use a plugin when its rendering and delivery model matches your app. Use the API Connector when you need a particular provider, template system, conversion pipeline or direct control over authentication and requests.

Does API Connector initialization run a real request?

Yes. Bubble reads the live response during initialization, so use a sandbox or non-destructive endpoint when possible and account for side effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attach generated files to a Bubble database record?

Yes. Save the returned Bubble file URL or provider file reference on the record after a successful generation, then enforce the record and file’s access rules together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I support invoices with many line items?

Choose page or element rendering with explicit multi-page repeating-group support, or send a structured items array to an external template API. Test long descriptions and page breaks.
