BSI is introducing an organizational assurance scheme for digital twin capability, with a pilot scheduled for October 2026. The BSI Kitemark™ for Digital Twin is intended to assess how an organization governs, operates and improves digital twins—not to approve a particular software product or prescribe one technical design. BSI’s pilot page invites organizations to register interest, but does not yet state an exact opening date or publish application details.
What BSI announced
BSI says the Kitemark was developed with digital twin creators, operators, technology providers and other industry stakeholders. Its pilot page gives the launch timing as “this October,” which, as of 7 October 2026, establishes a month rather than a specific launch day. The page invites organizations to register interest in the pilot: BSI’s pilot-interest page.

The scheme is framed as independent, third-party assurance of an organization’s governance, capability and controls for deploying and operating digital twins. It is not presented as a product certification for one platform, nor as a blueprint requiring every organization to implement twins in the same way.

What the Kitemark is intended to assess
BSI says the scheme is built around ISO/IEC 30186 and other key international standards. It describes five assessment dimensions:

Governance and competency
Assessment considers accountability, leadership commitment, workforce skills and clearly defined roles.
Digital twin capability and maturity
The focus is whether an organization’s maturity suits its intended use, including lifecycle management, operational deployment and improvement.

Value realization
Organizations are expected to define business objectives, track benefits, measure outcomes and use evidence to inform decisions.
These are BSI’s published dimensions, not a complete audit specification. The public materials reviewed do not set out a detailed protocol, scoring rubric, pass threshold, certification cycle or sample assessment report. BSI’s overview explains the scheme and its stated scope: Digital twins are moving from innovation to assurance.

How ISO/IEC 30186 fits
BSI identifies ISO/IEC 30186, “Digital twin — Maturity model and guidance for a maturity assessment,” as an important foundation. BSI characterizes it as a flexible framework for assessing capability and maturity, rather than a recipe for building a digital twin. The maturity level that makes sense depends on the intended outcome and use case.
That distinction matters: a reference to ISO/IEC 30186 does not mean a particular software platform has been certified. Organizations interested in the standard should confirm the current edition and available format through an authoritative standards listing.

What BSI says organizations may gain
BSI presents the Kitemark as a way to help organizations build trust with customers, regulators, investors and supply-chain partners; demonstrate value; improve procurement confidence; differentiate bids and tenders; reduce operational risk; and support continuous improvement. These are the scheme’s intended benefits as described by BSI. The public material reviewed does not provide independent outcome data showing that certification itself produces those results.
What is still unknown about the pilot
As of 7 October 2026, BSI’s public pilot page gives an October launch window and an invitation to register interest, but does not specify:
- the exact date applications or assessments open;
- eligibility requirements or the pilot’s geographic availability;
- the application and assessment steps, audit requirements or expected duration;
- fees, certificate term or renewal arrangements.
Those details should be confirmed with BSI rather than inferred from the announcement. The current invitation is a registration-of-interest offer, not a published application pack or fee schedule.

The Kitemark may be relevant to organizations that need to demonstrate that their digital twin work is governed and controlled, particularly where decisions affect customers, procurement, safety or critical operations. Before seeking assurance, clarify the intended use and the evidence stakeholders need. Useful questions include:
- What outcome is the digital twin meant to support, and what level of maturity does that use require?
- Who is accountable for the twin, its lifecycle and the decisions informed by its outputs?
- Can the organization demonstrate data quality, lineage, interoperability and appropriate security controls?
- How will it measure value and show that benefits are being realized?
- Does an independent third-party assessment address a real stakeholder need, or would an internal maturity review be sufficient?
BSI’s webinar page describes a session on ISO/IEC 30186 and the proposed Kitemark pilot, with speakers from BSI and the UK Digital Twin Centre. The page lists Andy Butterfield, Gary Pattison, Ceki Erginbas and Rebecca Lutton, but does not provide attributable spoken quotations: BSI webinar page.
