As of 3 October 2026, Brydon Carse has been charged by the Cricket Regulator with breaching ECB Professional Conduct Regulation 3.2 over events in Derby in the early hours of 23 August. The case has been referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel, and no hearing outcome or sanction had been reported. The charge is a cricket disciplinary allegation, not a criminal charge or a finding of wrongdoing.
What Carse has been charged with
The Cricket Regulator said on 2 October that Carse had been charged with breaching Regulation 3.2 in relation to events in Derby. The rule covers conduct that is improper, may prejudice cricket’s interests, or may bring the ECB, cricket or cricketers into disrepute. The regulator’s statement said the matter would be referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel for adjudication. The Independent’s report of the charge reproduces the regulation’s wording.

A charge is an allegation. It does not mean the Panel has found that Carse breached the rule. The regulator is responsible for bringing the case; the independent Panel decides whether a breach occurred.
How the cricket case differs from the police investigation
The two processes concern the same broad events but have different purposes and outcomes. Derbyshire Police investigated reports of an alleged assault in Derby city centre and closed its investigation with no further action, as reported on 18 September. Police said officers attended Molly Malones in the Wardwick in the early hours of 23 August; a man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and later de-arrested after giving his details. The report quotes Derbyshire Police’s statement.

| Process | What it concerns | Status reported by 3 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Police investigation | Reports of an alleged assault in Derby city centre; police also described an arrest on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly followed by de-arrest. | Closed with no further action, according to Derbyshire Police’s statement reported on 18 September. |
| Cricket disciplinary case | Whether conduct connected with the Derby events breached ECB Professional Conduct Regulation 3.2. | Carse charged on 2 October and case referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel; outcome pending. |
The police decision does not determine the cricket-regulatory case. Equally, the regulatory charge is not a criminal charge.
What happens at the Cricket Discipline Panel
The Panel hears professional domestic disciplinary cases in England and Wales and operates at arm’s length from the ECB and Cricket Regulator. Carse can admit or deny the charge. The Panel, not the regulator, determines liability and any sanction. The Cricket Regulator’s Panel explainer describes the process:

- If a charge is admitted and the case is suitable, it may be assigned to a sole arbitrator under the summary procedure.
- If the charge is denied, a tribunal determines whether a breach occurred. A three-person tribunal may hear the case where appropriate.
- If the charge is upheld, the tribunal also decides any sanction. Possible sanctions for cricketers include a reprimand, fine, suspension from cricketing activity or match and England selection eligibility, suspension or termination of registration, and education or training.
Those are general possible outcomes, not predictions about Carse. The tribunal controls the hearing’s timing and conduct; the process aims for a hearing as soon as reasonably practicable.

Timeline of the Derby case
- Early hours of 23 August 2026: The Derby events later cited in the conduct charge took place. Contemporary reporting described the arrest and de-arrest.
- 24 August: The ECB said it had referred the events to the Cricket Regulator for investigation. It also said Carse would be unavailable for the second Men’s Rothesay Test while the investigation continued; Sonny Baker replaced him. The ECB update records that selection decision.
- 18 September: Derbyshire Police’s investigation into an alleged assault was reported closed with no further action.
- 2 October: The Cricket Regulator charged Carse under Regulation 3.2 and referred the case to the independent Panel.
- 3 October: The latest status in the reports cited here was that the disciplinary process remained ongoing. The regulator said it would make no further comment while it continued.
What remains unknown
As of 3 October 2026, the sources cited had not reported a hearing date, Carse’s response to the charge, a Panel decision or a sanction. His absence from the ODI tri-series squad announced on 2 October was reported, but that selection information is not evidence of a sanction imposed by the Panel. The regulator had not commented further while the case was ongoing.

Carse’s separate 2024 betting case
This Derby charge is distinct from Carse’s earlier anti-corruption case. In 2024, the Cricket Regulator reported that he had placed 303 bets on cricket matches between 2017 and 2019 and received a 16-month suspension, with 13 months suspended for two years. Those figures and that suspension relate only to the earlier betting matter, not the 2026 Derby incident. The regulator’s 2024 case outcome sets out that decision.
