A blank or still-loading BrowserStack capture often means the screenshot ran before the expected content was ready—but JavaScript behavior, failed assets, authorization, and slow or unsuccessful network requests can produce similar results. The right fix depends on whether you captured with Percy, Automate, or BrowserStack Screenshots; Percy’s blank-capture guidance does not automatically apply to the other tools.
First identify which BrowserStack capture is blank
Check the product and capture path before changing settings. BrowserStack’s direct blank/loading-capture guidance is for Percy snapshots. Automate has separate debugging logs, while BrowserStack Screenshots has its own troubleshooting FAQ.

- Percy: A visual-testing snapshot, usually captured by calling
percySnapshot. Start with readiness, JavaScript behavior, and missing resources. BrowserStack’s Percy troubleshooting guide covers these cases. - Automate: A screenshot taken during a Playwright or Selenium browser test. Use the command timeline and the relevant visual, console, and network logs to locate what happened before capture.
- BrowserStack Screenshots: A screenshot made with the Screenshots product. Its FAQ lists troubleshooting topics including timed-out results and basic authentication, but the specific answer text is not established here. Consult the relevant FAQ entry or BrowserStack support rather than applying Percy settings by assumption.
Record the exact product, framework, browser and version, viewport, and capture step. A screenshot alone may not reveal whether the page failed to render or the capture simply happened too early.

BrowserStack’s first recommendation for a blank or loading Percy snapshot is to ensure the page is fully loaded before calling percySnapshot. Its troubleshooting guide says to try waitForSelector or waitForTimeout configuration.

Prefer a content-specific readiness condition
Wait for an element that signals the page’s meaningful content is available, such as the main results container or a specific heading. Choose the selector based on your application; there is no universal selector or wait duration that fits every site. A fixed delay can help diagnose a timing race, but it does not prove that the relevant content or its data request has completed.
Compare the capture with the test’s command sequence: did navigation complete, did the expected element appear, and did the snapshot run afterward? If the selector never appears, inspect the page and network evidence instead of increasing the delay indefinitely.
Use JavaScript mode as a diagnostic branch
Percy’s guide documents JavaScript-enabled and JavaScript-disabled capture behavior. Compare the two when investigating a blank result: if the output changes, that narrows the problem toward runtime rendering or script-dependent content. Disabling JavaScript is not a general final fix for a JavaScript application, because it may prevent the application from rendering the content the snapshot is meant to capture. Follow the product-specific guidance in the Percy documentation.
If the frame appears but content or styling is missing, inspect resources
A page frame that renders without its expected content or styling is a reason to check resource loading as well as readiness. In Percy, inspect the build or generated snapshot for missing resources. Look for failed or pending CSS, fonts, images, and data requests; check whether required hosts are allowlisted, whether requests time out, and whether authorization is configured for the resources being captured.

- Check failed request URLs and status codes, including requests to separate asset or API hosts.
- Verify that the captured resolution is consistent with the configured device-pixel ratio.
- Check whether lazy-loaded assets were requested before capture, and whether responsive
srcsetbehavior selected an available asset. - Confirm the capture has the authentication state needed to access protected pages and resources.
Do not infer a single cause from the appearance alone. Confirm it in the snapshot and request evidence. See BrowserStack’s Percy troubleshooting documentation for Percy-specific asset and authorization checks.
For Automate, correlate the screenshot with logs
In Automate, locate the command at which the output turns blank, then correlate it with visual, console, and network evidence. Settings differ by framework, so use the documentation for the runner in use.
Playwright
BrowserStack’s Playwright debugging guide describes visual logs as screenshots at each Playwright command, console logs for JavaScript output, and network logs in HAR format for traffic, latency, requests, and responses. Enable visual logs with browserstack.debug: true and network logs with browserstack.networkLogs: true in the configuration appropriate to your setup. Consult BrowserStack’s Playwright debugging guide for current configuration and browser-specific constraints.

Selenium
BrowserStack’s Selenium documentation says visual logs are disabled by default and can be enabled with debug: true. Console logs default to errors; in the documented context, console logs currently work only on Chrome. Network logs require networkLogs: true. Check BrowserStack’s Selenium debugging options for the applicable capabilities and current support.
That Selenium documentation states that text logs are retained for 60 days and other listed logs for 30 days, counted from generation. This is the retention policy stated on the documentation page and may change.
Use Chrome DevTools to distinguish late rendering from failed requests
When you can reproduce the issue in Chrome, open DevTools, select Network, and reload the page. Inspect request status, type, initiator, size, and timing to find failed or still-pending resources. The Network panel’s Screenshots tab can capture page thumbnails during loading; selecting a thumbnail connects the visible page state to network activity at that moment. This helps distinguish a capture made before drawing completed from a required request that failed or remained pending. See Chrome for Developers’ Network panel documentation.

When the problem occurs only on mobile or in a full-page capture
If the issue is limited to a viewport width or capture shape, investigate responsive rendering and scrolling rather than assuming the whole page is broken. The following remedies are Percy-specific.

Only certain mobile widths are wrong
Check whether the page serves different DOM or assets at different widths. Percy’s guide discusses multiple DOM support when the DOM is wrong across mobile widths, and device-specific DOM loading (defer upload) for incorrectly captured responsive pages. If a resource may have failed once, retrying can help establish whether the issue is intermittent. Escalate a persistent width-specific failure with the affected viewport and capture details.
Full-page output misses lazy content or repeats sections
For lazy content, Percy’s guidance recommends scrolling before capture so the page has an opportunity to load it. If a full-page capture is not scrollable or repeats patterns, investigate internal scrolling and the Percy-specific PercyCSS or scroll-scope guidance. Do not apply these Percy remedies to a different BrowserStack capture product without checking its documentation. The relevant details are in Percy’s troubleshooting guide.

- Timing: page-load completion, presence of the expected content selector, and the exact command when the screenshot was taken.
- Browser and viewport: browser and version, device, width, and whether the result changes across widths.
- Runtime and network: console errors, request status and timing, missing assets, and authentication state.
- Capture shape: viewport, full-page, or scoped capture; internal scrolling and lazy loading.
If these checks do not isolate the cause, send BrowserStack support the product and framework, session or build identifier, browser and viewport, capture step, and relevant visual, console, and network logs. The cause cannot be diagnosed from “blank” alone.
