First identify which BrowserStack product produced the image. A Percy screenshot is not necessarily a screenshot from Chrome running on Windows: BrowserStack says Percy’s Chrome, Firefox, and Edge render on Linux, where fonts, form controls, and scrollbars can differ from Windows. To debug a mismatch, record both environments, align the viewport and capture conditions, then change one variable at a time.
Why BrowserStack and Windows Chrome can produce different screenshots
“BrowserStack screenshot” can mean output from Percy, Automate, Live, or the Screenshots API. Those are different capture paths, so start by identifying the product rather than treating every image as the same kind of Chrome capture.
BrowserStack documents that Percy’s Chrome, Firefox, and Edge render on Linux. It notes that text can consequently look different from the same page on Windows or macOS. System fonts, native form controls, and scrollbars can also vary across operating systems. A visual difference in one of those areas is not automatically a page regression. See BrowserStack’s cross-browser visual testing documentation.
Identify the capture pipeline
- Percy: BrowserStack manages the rendering environment and updates its browser versions over time. Check the browser information for the project rather than inferring the underlying platform from a browser label.
- Automate: You can specify the operating system and browser for a controlled comparison. Record the exact OS, OS version, browser name, and browser version.
- Live or Screenshots API: Record which one generated the image and the settings used. Do not assume its defaults match Percy or local Chrome.
Debug the mismatch in a controlled order
- Label both images. Write down the BrowserStack product and whether the comparison image came from local Chrome on Windows. “Chrome screenshot” alone is not enough to identify the rendering environment.
- Record environment metadata. For each image, note OS and version, browser and version, desktop resolution, browser-window and page-viewport dimensions, screenshot tool, and the condition used to decide the page was ready. For Percy, inspect the project’s browser information because BrowserStack manages and updates its underlying environment.
- Match dimensions. Compare the same page viewport and browser-window size, not just similarly named desktop resolutions. For Automate, set the
resolutioncapability before the test starts and choose a value supported by the target Windows version. BrowserStack documents1920x1080as the default Automate Selenium desktop resolution; the supported values depend on Windows version, and resolution cannot be changed during runtime. - Match page state and capture method. Use the same URL and route, content, scroll position, and readiness condition. Keep viewport versus full-page capture and image quality consistent. BrowserStack’s Screenshots API documentation exposes
wait_timeandqualitysettings; its FAQ index also identifies timing, timeouts, full-page results, quality, and repeated elements as troubleshooting topics. - Vary one factor at a time. Compare the same browser version across operating systems, then the same OS across browser versions. After that, check dimensions and capture timing. This helps separate operating-system rendering differences from browser or test-state changes.
- Classify what remains. If the remaining differences are in text, controls, or scrollbars and occur only across operating systems, they may be expected environment differences. If a difference appears with the same OS, browser, dimensions, and capture conditions, investigate the page or test setup rather than attributing it to the OS.
What to compare for each screenshot
| Comparison item | Record or align | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product and rendering path | Percy, Automate, Live, or Screenshots API | Percy’s managed rendering environment is not interchangeable with a local Windows browser. |
| Operating system | OS name and version | Fonts, native controls, and scrollbars can vary by OS. |
| Browser | Name and exact version | Browser versions may render differently; Percy’s versions are managed over time. |
| Dimensions | Desktop resolution, browser window, and page viewport | Different dimensions can change layout and text wrapping. Automate’s resolution must be set before the test begins. |
| Page and capture state | URL, route, content, scroll position, wait condition, and viewport/full-page mode | Timing or capture-mode differences can produce images of different page states. |
| Output quality | Quality or compression setting | Different output quality can affect pixel-level comparisons. |

Use Percy for managed visual checks
Percy is useful for visual checks across browsers, but interpret diffs with its managed operating system in mind. When a difference is plausibly caused by OS-level rendering, inspect the browser information and determine whether it is an expected environment difference before treating it as a regression.

Use Automate when the OS itself must be controlled
For a deliberate cross-OS comparison, configure Automate with explicit os, osVersion, browserName, and browserVersion. Set desktop resolution before the test starts, and keep the browser window and page viewport comparable to the Windows capture.
Verify Screenshots API details before relying on an example
BrowserStack’s Screenshots API documentation lists OS, OS version, browser and version, Windows resolution, screenshot quality, and wait time as configuration parameters. Its examples include historical material, so verify current API availability and supported browser/OS combinations before building a workflow around them.

Common causes and fixes
- Text looks different across Percy and Windows: Confirm Percy’s managed platform. Linux-rendered text may differ from Windows text because of the OS font stack.
- Inputs, buttons, or scrollbars differ: Check whether the captures use different operating systems; these elements can use platform-specific rendering.
- Layout or wrapping shifts: Compare desktop resolution, browser-window dimensions, and page viewport. For Automate, configure resolution at test start; it cannot be changed mid-run.
- Elements are missing or repeated: Confirm the page was captured at the same readiness point and scroll position, and that both screenshots use the same viewport or full-page mode.
- Images differ despite apparently matching settings: Check exact browser versions, wait conditions, and screenshot quality. Percy’s managed browser versions can change over time.
- Automate rejects a resolution or it has no effect: Verify that the value is supported by the selected Windows version and is set before the test begins.

If you need a standalone website screenshot rather than a controlled Percy-versus-Windows comparison, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. It does not make its rendering environment equivalent to Windows Chrome; use BrowserStack Automate when you need explicit OS and browser control. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its response includes page-verdict and billing headers, and its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
