Browserless’s REST API accepts a URL or HTML and returns an image. Lambda can run Puppeteer with a headless browser, but your team owns packaging, runtime compatibility, configuration, and storage. Neither is a universal cost or speed winner: compare them with representative pages and your expected concurrency.
Which option fits your screenshot job?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-off, stateless captures | Browserless REST | It provides a managed browser endpoint intended for screenshot and other one-off tasks. Browserless Screenshot API accepts a URL or HTML and returns image data. |
| Persistent browser state or direct browser control | Browserless WebSocket or another browser-session interface | REST is not the only Browserless interface: WebSocket connections suit workflows that need an open browser session. See Browserless API comparison. |
| Close integration with existing AWS jobs and storage | AWS Lambda | You can package the browser workload and connect it to AWS services. An AWS example captures with Puppeteer in Lambda and saves images to S3, with another function fanning out URL work: AWS Architecture Blog example. |
| Minimal browser-runtime operations | Browserless | Browserless manages browser infrastructure; with Lambda, your team packages and maintains the browser runtime. |
Browserless is the more direct service for a single screenshot request; Lambda is an architecture choice for teams that want to own the browser job and its AWS integration. For either option, page behavior, bot defenses, output storage, and concurrency can change the result.
How to take a screenshot with the Browserless REST API
Send an HTTP POST to /screenshot, authenticate with a Browserless token, and provide either a page URL or inline HTML. The response is binary image data in PNG, JPEG, or WebP format. Full-page capture is supported. Consult the Screenshot API documentation for the current request schema and available options.
Request shape
The API uses Puppeteer-style screenshot settings. Depending on the job, configure full-page capture, output type, viewport, device scale factor, clipping or selector capture, wait behavior, navigation settings, resource rejection, scrolling, or best-attempt behavior. A typical request conceptually contains a URL and screenshot options:

Use the documented field names and token format for your Browserless deployment; do not assume that an example payload for one endpoint or version applies unchanged to another. Save the HTTP response body as a binary file rather than treating it as JSON.
Capturing a complete page
For the question “Can I capture a full-page screenshot via the API?”—yes. Enable full-page capture in the screenshot options. This captures the page’s expanded document, but it does not guarantee that content which loads only after scrolling has appeared. For lazy-loaded images or sections, use the API’s documented scroll and wait controls before capturing.

When Lambda is the better fit
Lambda makes sense when the screenshot is part of a broader AWS workflow—for example, when a job already receives work through AWS orchestration and writes artifacts to S3. AWS documents container-image deployments for Lambda, and its architecture example demonstrates Puppeteer-based screenshot capture in a container image. That is an implementation example, not a promise that every Chromium and Puppeteer combination works without adaptation.
Lambda limits that shape browser jobs
AWS’s current Lambda quota documentation lists the following standard limits. These are platform limits, not recommended settings for every screenshot workload. See AWS Lambda quotas.

| Resource | Documented Lambda limit | Screenshot implication |
|---|---|---|
| Function timeout | Up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) | Include browser startup, navigation, waits, capture, and storage in the execution time. |
| Memory | 128 MB to 10,240 MB | Measure peak browser use under realistic page and concurrency conditions. AWS allocates more CPU as configured memory increases; 1,769 MB corresponds to one vCPU. |
| Container image | Up to 10 GB uncompressed | Useful when browser binaries and dependencies do not fit a zip-based deployment. |
| Zip package | 50 MB zipped for direct API/SDK upload; 250 MB maximum uncompressed contents, including layers and custom runtimes | Package size can make a browser-heavy zip deployment awkward; check the exact deployment path and limits. |
/tmp storage |
512 MB to 10,240 MB | Choose enough temporary space for browser files, downloads, and intermediate artifacts. |
These figures come from AWS’s current quota documentation; confirm the limits and configuration options for your account and deployment before designing around them. Container-image deployment is documented at Create a Lambda function using a container image.
Designing the Lambda workflow
- Package the browser and dependencies. Select a compatible Chromium and Puppeteer build, then test that exact image in the intended Lambda environment. AWS documents the deployment mechanism, but it does not certify every browser/version combination.
- Accept a bounded job. Pass the target URL and any capture settings to the function. Validate inputs and decide how failures should be surfaced to the caller.
- Navigate, wait, and capture. Set navigation and wait behavior for the target pages, then capture the required viewport or full page.
- Persist the artifact. Return a small result or object location rather than relying on temporary files as durable storage. The AWS example stores images in S3.
- Scale deliberately. If work arrives as a large URL list, use a queue or controlled fan-out and set concurrency based on browser memory, downstream storage, and target-site impact.
Capture completeness, access, and failure handling
A screenshot reflects what the browser successfully loaded before capture; the service does not make inaccessible content accessible. Browserless documents that automation blocking can result in blank or white images, CAPTCHA challenges, access-denied screens, or missing elements. Its guidance covers waits, scrolling, and request or navigation controls: Screenshot API troubleshooting and options.
- Blank or white capture: Check whether the page actually rendered, whether navigation completed, and whether the site returned a blocked response. Adjust the wait strategy or inspect the resulting page state.
- CAPTCHA or access denied: Treat this as a target-site access restriction, not a screenshot-format problem. Neither a managed browser nor a self-hosted Lambda browser guarantees access to every site.
- Missing lazy-loaded content: Wait for the relevant selector or content, and scroll where the page loads material on demand before capturing.
- Missing element: Confirm that the selector is correct and that the element exists after navigation and client-side rendering have finished.
- Slow or inconsistent pages: Tune waits and navigation settings against the target’s actual behavior; a fixed delay can waste execution time on fast pages and still be too short for slow ones.
Cost, latency, and reliability: how to compare fairly
Available documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples price or performance winner. Lambda’s quotas do not determine its total cost, and a managed endpoint’s convenience alone does not determine the cost of a particular workload. Compare current commercial terms and measure your own request path.
Run a representative trial
- Use the same set of URLs, including dynamic pages, long pages, and pages with lazy-loaded content.
- Keep image format, viewport, full-page behavior, wait conditions, and output destination consistent.
- Measure end-to-end time, including browser startup, navigation, capture, and artifact storage—not just the screenshot call.
- Test the expected concurrency and image sizes. For Lambda, observe memory pressure, duration, package size, and temporary-storage use.
- Track failures separately by cause: timeouts, load failures, blocked pages, missing content, and storage errors.
- Compare current service pricing and AWS charges for the regions, traffic, storage, and concurrency you will actually use.
Reliability also depends on the target sites and your retry policy. Retrying a transient navigation failure may help; repeatedly retrying a CAPTCHA or access-denied response usually does not solve the underlying restriction.
