Browserless Screenshot Times Out on Slow Websites: How to Fix It

Identify whether Browserless timed out during the full request, navigation, a readiness wait, or screenshot capture—and fix that stage instead of blindly extending every timeout.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a Browserless screenshot times out, first identify which stage expired: the overall REST request, page navigation, a selector or function wait, or the screenshot operation. Increase or change that specific timeout, and wait for the page condition your capture actually needs. A longer timeout will not fix a CAPTCHA, a 403, a blank page, or content that never appears.

Find which timeout is expiring

Browserless has separate timeout layers. The query parameter timeout sets the budget for the whole REST operation, including waits. Navigation can have its own gotoOptions.timeout; explicit selector, function, or event waits can also take time; and BQL screenshot capture has a screenshot.timeout option. Change the layer that is actually failing rather than raising every limit.

Check the error and the request configuration to determine whether the page failed to navigate, a readiness condition never became true, or the screenshot itself took too long. Browserless notes that an HTTP 200 response from its API does not necessarily mean the target website returned a successful status.

Set a realistic overall request budget

Use the REST query parameter timeout for the full operation. Its budget must leave time for navigation, any readiness waits, and capture. A value that is too low can cut off a slow but usable page; one that is needlessly high delays error detection. Browserless does not establish one maximum that applies to every route, deployment, and account, so check the current documentation for the endpoint and account you use.

Do not treat the overall budget as interchangeable with navigation or screenshot-specific settings. The overall request includes wait operations; a timeout inside one stage can expire before that full budget is used.

Choose a navigation condition that fits the page

Browserless supports these waitUntil conditions. Choose the one that corresponds to the content needed in the image, not simply the most exhaustive wait.

Condition What it waits for When it may fit
domcontentloaded The initial HTML has been parsed. When the desired content is available from the initial document and does not require all dependent resources to finish.
load The page’s dependent resources have loaded. When the capture depends on resources that finish as part of the page load.
networkidle0 There are zero network connections for at least 500 ms. When the page settles and has no persistent background requests.
networkidle2 There are no more than two network connections for at least 500 ms. When a page has some continuing network activity, but can still reach this quieter state.

Pages with polling or other long-lived requests may never satisfy a network-idle condition. In that case, use a specific element or application condition that signals the content is ready.

Wait for the content the screenshot needs

A readiness wait is more dependable than guessing how many seconds a slow page needs, when the page exposes a useful signal:

  • waitForSelector waits for a particular element; it can also wait for the element to be visible.
  • waitForFunction waits for a condition evaluated in the page.
  • waitForTimeout adds a fixed delay. Use it when time itself matters, such as allowing an animation to finish, rather than as a substitute for a known readiness condition.

Make sure the overall request budget includes the chosen wait as well as navigation and capture. If a selector or function never matches, investigate whether the target page rendered the expected content before extending its timeout.

Use bestAttempt only if a partial capture is useful

Browserless documents bestAttempt: true as an option that can continue after some awaited events time out and return the page state then available. That can be useful when a partial image is better than a failed request, but continuation does not prove that the necessary content loaded. Inspect the result for the specific text, element, and visual state your workflow requires.

Check for blocking before extending timeouts

A timeout may be a symptom of a target that automation cannot access, rather than a slow page. Browserless lists blank or white captures, CAPTCHA pages, access-denied or 403 responses, and missing or broken elements as signs that a site may be blocking automation. A longer wait will not resolve those conditions by itself. Check the actual capture and target response, then address the access problem or use an authorized route to the content.

Reduce optional screenshot work

Separate page readiness from capture cost. Full-page screenshots and waiting for images can add work, especially on long pages or pages with many images. Enable fullPage or waitForImages only when the output needs them. Browserless also documents shared configuration options for rejecting resource types or requests by pattern; blocking resources can reduce unnecessary work, but only block them after confirming they are not needed for the visual result.

ScreenshotNeo offers a single-request screenshot API, with PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. For example, save a WebP capture of a page with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing. An MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default BQL screenshot timeout in Browserless?

Browserless documents a default of 30 seconds (30,000 ms) for the BQL screenshot.timeout option. This is a documented option default, not a universal maximum for every request layer or deployment.

Does an HTTP 200 from Browserless prove the target page loaded successfully?

No. Browserless notes that its API can return HTTP 200 even when the target site did not return a successful status.
