Turning on browser privacy features can make a VPN feel less essential for one particular job: limiting tracking inside the browser. But the protections overlap only partly. Firefox’s tracker blocking, cookie isolation, fingerprinting defenses, and DNS-over-HTTPS address specific browser-level risks; a VPN or proxy changes how sites and network providers see the connection, within the scope it actually covers.
What browser privacy features changed
In Firefox, Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks known trackers that collect information about browsing activity across sites. Total Cookie Protection keeps each site’s cookies in a separate jar, restricting cross-site cookie sharing; Mozilla says this is enabled automatically. Firefox also includes protections intended to reduce browser fingerprinting. These measures can make it harder for particular tracking techniques to follow activity across sites, but they do not make a user anonymous or encrypt all network traffic. Mozilla’s Firefox protection overview describes these features.

That can change the day-to-day experience: fewer known trackers can collect browsing data, and a cookie set by one site is less useful for recognizing activity on another. It does not follow that every form of tracking is blocked, or that a website cannot identify a visitor through other information.

| Reader’s goal | Relevant protection | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Limit known cross-site trackers and cookie sharing | Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection | Does not conceal the connection’s IP address or promise anonymity. |
| Reduce browser fingerprinting | Firefox’s fingerprinting protections | Does not guarantee a unique or unidentifiable browser profile. |
| Limit data left on the device after a session | Firefox Private Browsing deletes cookie data when the private window closes. | Does not hide browsing activity from an ISP. Mozilla’s Private Browsing explanation makes this distinction. |
| Encrypt domain lookups between the browser and a DNS resolver | Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS sends domain lookups to a DNS server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. | Does not, by itself, hide all destination information or replace a VPN. Mozilla’s DNS-over-HTTPS documentation describes the lookup protection. |
| Change the IP address websites see and limit which servers the network provider can see | A proxy or VPN, depending on its routing scope and configuration | Protection may be limited to one browser rather than all apps or device traffic. |
What a VPN or proxy still does differently
Browser tracking defenses operate on tracking mechanisms such as cookies and browser characteristics. A VPN or proxy instead routes network traffic through an intermediary. Mozilla describes its optional Firefox proxy feature as concealing the user’s IP address from websites and preventing the network provider from seeing which servers Firefox connects to. That is a different layer of protection from blocking trackers. Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice states: “When enabled, it proxies Firefox network traffic through an intermediary to prevent your network provider from seeing which servers you connect to and to hide your IP address from the sites you visit.”

That description is specific to the Firefox feature and Firefox traffic. It should not be read as a promise that other applications or all device traffic are covered. For any VPN or proxy, check whether its scope is the browser, selected apps, or the whole device; do not assume the answer from the word “VPN” alone.
Why “almost redundant” can be true for one person
If your main reason for using a VPN was to reduce cross-site tracking while browsing, browser protections may address more of that concern directly. You may therefore notice less reason to keep a VPN enabled for that narrow goal. But if you use one to change the IP address shown to websites, limit the network provider’s view of server connections, or route traffic from apps outside the browser, browser tracking features do not do the same job.

- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
The practical question is not whether a browser replaces every VPN use. It is which observer or tracking method you are trying to limit, and whether the protection you enabled covers that activity.

- Cross-site tracking: Look at tracker blocking and cookie isolation in the browser.
- Browser fingerprinting: Browser protections may reduce particular fingerprinting techniques, without guaranteeing anonymity.
- Local traces: Private browsing affects what remains in browser history and storage after the session; it is not a network tunnel.
- DNS lookup visibility: DNS-over-HTTPS protects the DNS lookup path to the resolver, not every detail about destinations.
- IP address and network-provider visibility: Consider a VPN or proxy with the necessary routing scope, and verify what traffic it covers.
- Other apps or device traffic: Confirm that the chosen service routes those connections; Firefox’s optional proxy description is limited to Firefox traffic.
These protections can be combined because they address different parts of a connection. Whether keeping a VPN enabled is worthwhile depends on your purpose, the browser and its settings, the VPN’s actual scope, and the trade-offs you accept.
