Don’t wait for a JavaScript timer or animation callback to fire at the beat: use a look-ahead scheduler to enqueue the sound early, then let the visual control follow the scheduled event.
Why a JavaScript timer should not start the sound
JavaScript timers are useful for waking a scheduler periodically, but they should not decide the instant a note begins. Their callbacks can run late, so starting audio directly from each callback can make beats uneven or drift over time.

Web Audio provides a separate clock for audio scheduling. AudioContext.currentTime is measured in seconds on the context’s audio timeline, and scheduled source events use that same timeline. The W3C Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft describes scheduled times as relative to currentTime. See the MDN currentTime reference and the Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft.

Keep a target audio time for the next beat. Calculate the beat period from the current tempo, in seconds per beat, and advance the target by that period after each scheduled beat. Avoid recalculating each target from the time a JavaScript callback happened to run; that would let callback jitter feed into the musical timing.

For a source node, call start(when) with the target time in the same context timeline. The MDN start() reference documents the scheduled start time parameter. For example, the essential relationship is:
nextBeatTime += secondsPerBeat;
source.start(nextBeatTime);This is a conceptual fragment, not a complete sequencer: a real scheduler also needs to create or select the sound source, track beat numbers, and handle tempo changes and context state.

Use a look-ahead queue
Do not wait for the target beat to arrive before asking JavaScript to schedule it. Wake a timer periodically, compare the next target time with audioContext.currentTime + scheduleAheadTime, and enqueue every event that falls within that future window. The timer only keeps the queue filled; the audio engine starts each sound at its scheduled audio time.

- Maintain the next beat number and its target time on the audio timeline.
- On each scheduler wake-up, inspect beats due within the chosen look-ahead window.
- For each qualifying beat, create or configure its audio event and schedule it at its target time.
- Record the beat number and target time in an event queue, then advance the next target by one beat period.
- Continue waking periodically while the sequencer is running.
MDN’s step-sequencer tutorial demonstrates this pattern. Its example checks every 25 ms and schedules 0.1 seconds ahead; those are demonstration values, not universal production settings. Choose and validate the interval and look-ahead window for your application and target devices.

Make the visual control follow scheduled audio
The audio scheduler and the interface have different jobs. The scheduler starts the sound at the queued target time. The visual layer reads queued beat times and compares them with the audio context’s current time to decide which beat indicator to highlight. MDN’s tutorial uses this separation when it queues notes for audio scheduling and checks their target times while drawing the interface.
Do not make an animation callback the sound clock. Rendering can be delayed independently of audio scheduling; using it to start sounds couples musical timing to screen updates. Instead, use rendering to display the event that the audio timeline says is due. The indicator may not appear at precisely the same instant on every device, so validate the visual and audio experience together when their alignment matters.

Handle suspension and resumption
AudioContext.currentTime stops advancing while its context is suspended. If a page or application suspends audio, do not assume the audio clock continued alongside wall-clock time. Pause the beat state or reconcile it when audio resumes, then establish a consistent next target time before scheduling more events. The MDN currentTime documentation describes this suspension behavior.

The AudioContext options documentation describes interactive as the default latency hint, intended for sound that responds to user actions or needs to coincide with visual cues. The browser selects a low latency it can manage without glitches; the hint does not guarantee a fixed end-to-end delay. The playback hint trades latency for playback time and lower power use.

Choose based on how responsive the instrument should feel, how much glitch risk the application can tolerate, and its power needs. Test on the browsers and devices you intend to support rather than promising a particular delay from the hint alone.
Decide between direct Web Audio and a framework
For a small sequencer, direct Web Audio can be a good fit when you want to own the event queue, timing, and transport behavior. A framework may be more useful as interactive-music needs expand. MDN describes Tone.js as an excellent place to start for more complex audio applications.

The choice depends on the complexity of the application, how much scheduling and transport behavior you need to customize, and whether broader music-application facilities would save implementation work.
Account for precision limits
Even with correct scheduling, identical timing behavior across every browser and configuration is not guaranteed. The browser advances currentTime in audio-rendering increments while the context runs, and privacy settings can reduce the precision exposed to scripts. Treat the audio timeline as the scheduling authority, but test the experience on the configurations that matter to your users.
