The difference is where the game runs. A browser-based game typically runs on your device, with the browser providing the interface; cloud gaming runs the game on remote hardware and streams the video and controls over the internet. Both can open in a browser, so the browser alone does not tell you which kind you are playing.
Where does the game run?
In a locally executed browser game, your device processes the game and draws its images. The browser is the way you access it, much like an app window. In cloud gaming, a remote service runs the game and sends a live video stream to your screen; your inputs travel back to the service.

That distinction matters more than whether you install an app. Xbox and NVIDIA both offer browser access to cloud gaming, so a game running in a browser may still be processed remotely. See Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW getting-started guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do the practical requirements compare?
| Factor | Locally executed browser game | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where processing happens | On your device, in or through the browser | On the service’s remote hardware; the device receives a stream |
| What your device needs to do | Run the game in the browser, so the device’s own capability matters | Display the stream and send your inputs; compatibility still depends on the service and device |
| Connection | Needed for access and any online features, but local rendering does not depend on a continuous game-video stream | A stable, low-latency connection is important because play depends on a responsive stream |
| Game availability | Depends on the specific browser game and its access conditions | Depends on the service’s supported games, your region, device, and plan; some services rely on linked game libraries |
| Controls | May use keyboard, touch, or a controller, depending on the game | Depends on the game, service, and device; a compatible controller can be useful but is not universally required |
Cloud requirements vary by provider and device. NVIDIA publishes its GeForce NOW system requirements; check the selected service’s current guidance rather than relying on a single speed threshold for every setup.

What does this mean for GTA-style games?
“GTA-style” describes a kind of game, not a delivery method. An open-world crime game playable in a browser could be running locally, while a cloud service could stream a supported full game to a browser. Neither “GTA-style” nor “browser-based” guarantees that an official Grand Theft Auto title is available.
For cloud services, confirm the exact title and access terms before subscribing or buying. Xbox describes eligible cloud games on supported devices, while GeForce NOW describes playing supported games from linked PC libraries. Availability can depend on the game, region, device, plan, and—in some cases—whether you own or have access to the game. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming information and GeForce NOW guide.

A December 2025 Tom’s Hardware report described a browser-playable Vice City implementation that required an original game file. That is a reported example, not confirmation from Rockstar; it does not establish that the implementation remains available, authorized, or reliable. See Tom’s Hardware’s report.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose a locally executed browser game if you want a game that runs on your device and your browser can handle it. Check its controls and access requirements on the game’s own page.
- Consider cloud gaming if your device is compatible with the service but you want to play a supported title without running the full game locally. Prioritize a stable, responsive connection and verify that the exact game is accessible to you.
- Check controls before committing. Xbox’s getting-started guide distinguishes app and browser play and lists controller options. Support varies by setup; do not assume every browser game or cloud device requires a controller.
How to check a cloud-gaming setup
- Find the exact game. Search the current catalog or game-access information for the service you plan to use. For GeForce NOW, check whether the game is supported and whether your account needs access through a linked PC library.
- Confirm region, plan, and device eligibility. Read the service’s current terms and supported-device information for your location. Browser access does not mean every game is available, free, or offered in every region.
- Check connection and controls. Use the provider’s requirements for your device and connection, then verify that your intended keyboard, touch controls, or controller is supported.
- Try the browser or app route the service specifies. The available route can differ by service and device; follow its current setup guide rather than assuming the same steps apply everywhere.
