Browser-based apps are enough for many web-design workflows—especially interface design, interactive prototyping, collaboration, and feedback—but they are not automatically enough for every project or for delivering a production website. The answer depends on connectivity, browser and font setup, file complexity, and whether the deliverable is a design or a deployed site.
What browser-based design apps can handle
For interface work, browser apps can bring design files, interactive prototypes, comments, and collaboration into a shared workspace. Figma is one documented example: a 2023 UK Competition and Markets Authority report described its collaboration features and plug-in ecosystem as valued by users, alongside vector editing and ease of use. That is historical context, not a current ranking of design tools or proof that every browser app offers the same features. The CMA report

It helps to distinguish three different outputs:
- Design file: A visual specification or working canvas for an interface.
- Interactive prototype: A way to demonstrate flows and interactions without necessarily delivering a live site.
- Production website: A deployed experience that must be validated and maintained in its real hosting and runtime environment.
Figma Make, for example, is described as a prompt-to-app tool for functional prototypes, web apps, and interactive UI. That expands what can be created, but does not establish that a generated project replaces testing and ongoing maintenance in its deployment environment. Availability for sharing and publishing depends on plan and seat; consult Figma’s current Make FAQ before relying on a particular feature.

Unreliable internet or offline work
Figma says it needs a reliable, stable internet connection for full functionality. Some activity is possible offline, but Figma has no dedicated offline mode. Its help guidance warns that clearing browser cache or data can erase offline changes that have not synced. If you routinely work through outages or travel without dependable access, test the exact offline workflow and recovery behavior before making it central to a project. Large or complex files
Figma’s troubleshooting guidance gives an approximate active-memory limit of 2 GB per browser tab, with variation by device. When a file reaches its limit, Figma may lock it. This is Figma’s estimate, not a universal browser benchmark. Figma also says unreliable connections can slow loading, lower image resolution, and cause lag while panning or zooming. It recommends closing unused tabs and splitting files to reduce memory use. Figma troubleshooting checklist
Local fonts and browser setup
Figma’s browser guidance lists Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox; requires WebGL; recommends a current browser and 100% zoom; and directs users to install its Font Helper when they need computer-installed fonts. These are Figma-specific requirements, so verify the requirements for whichever browser app you use. Figma browser configuration guidance

| Workflow need | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Connectivity and offline work | Can you continue during outages? How are offline edits saved and recovered? |
| Collaboration and handoff | Do you need simultaneous editing, comments, shareable prototypes, or developer handoff? |
| Production scope | Is the deliverable a design file, prototype, or deployed website? Plan validation for the actual deliverable. |
| File performance | Test representative project files on the computers and connections your team will use; watch for slow loading, memory pressure, and canvas lag. |
| Fonts and browser environment | Confirm browser support, WebGL, and any local-font helper on the work computer. |
| Plan and access | Check current plan and seat rules for the collaboration, publishing, and export features you require. |
For broader market context, the CMA’s 2023 report also noted that Adobe XD appealed to users familiar with Adobe tools or a Creative Cloud subscription. The report referenced UXTools surveys from 2021 and 2022, so these observations should not be read as current rankings or present-day plan-value comparisons. CMA report

Practical bottom line
A browser-based app can be a complete environment for many interface-design and collaboration tasks when your connection, browser setup, and project size suit it. It is a weaker fit when you need dependable offline work or routinely handle files that strain browser memory. And a design or prototype is not the same thing as a production website: choose and validate tools against the deliverable you actually own.
