You can reduce Facebook and other sites’ cross-site tracking, but no single browser setting guarantees that every business stops sharing activity with Meta. Turn on your browser’s tracking protections, review Meta’s current activity controls, and avoid using Facebook Login on unrelated sites when you have a practical alternative.
What browser protections can—and cannot—do
Websites can include tracking technology that observes activity across sites. Browser protections can block some known tracker requests or limit the use of cross-site cookies. But a browser cannot control every way a business may send information to Meta, including sharing that occurs outside the browser. Nor do these protections cover activity within Facebook and Meta’s other services.

Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement describes an expanded “Activity from other businesses” control and says the older “Your activity off Meta technologies” setting is being discontinued. Older instructions that rely on that retired setting may not match current accounts. Firefox and Safari offer built-in ways to limit some cross-site tracking. These address browser-based mechanisms, not every route by which businesses may share information with Meta.

Firefox
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is on by default. It blocks common social-media trackers and cross-site tracking cookies. To use the stricter option, open Firefox’s privacy settings and select Strict under Enhanced Tracking Protection. Strict mode blocks all cross-site cookies and additional tracking content, but may interfere with logins, payments, embedded media, or other site features. If a particular site stops working, Mozilla says you can turn off protection for that site using the shield icon in the address bar. Mozilla’s Firefox tracking-protection guide.
Safari on Mac
In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy and enable Prevent cross-site tracking. Apple says this blocks tracking through social-media buttons, which can track visitors even when they do not click them. Optional: Privacy Badger
If you want an additional browser tool, the Electronic Frontier Foundation describes Privacy Badger as blocking forms of tracking that many built-in browser protections overlook. Review Meta’s current activity control
Look in your Meta Accounts Center or account settings for Activity from other businesses. Meta says this control is expanding as it phases out Your activity off Meta technologies. The available labels and route may vary by account, platform, and region, so use the current wording in your own settings rather than relying on a universal click-by-click path.

Meta says it uses activity information received from businesses to personalize more than ads, including Feed and AI responses. In its June 2026 announcement, the company said: “We’re not collecting any new data as part of this update, and you’re in control of how we use this data to personalize your experience.” That is Meta’s description of the change, not independent verification of how every business shares data. Meta also said it personalizes the experiences of 3.5 billion people who use its apps and services each day; that is a company-published figure, not an independent measurement.
Use fewer Facebook-connected logins
When an unrelated site offers Facebook Login, choose a password or another sign-in method if that is practical for you. Mozilla notes that signing in with Facebook can expose activity to the social network, and Meta has identified Facebook Login as one of the business tools through which it may receive activity information. Changing how you sign in reduces this particular connection; it does not undo other tracking or data sharing.

What these steps do not guarantee
- Blocking cookies is not the same as blocking every tracker. Browser protections target certain known mechanisms; they do not prevent all methods of tracking.
- Browser settings cannot control every business-to-Meta transfer. A business may send activity information directly, outside the browser mechanisms those settings address.
- Private browsing and VPNs are not anonymity switches. The cited protections do not establish that either one stops all tracking by Meta or other sites.
- Activity within Meta services is a separate matter. Cross-site protections do not prevent Facebook or other Meta services from processing activity that happens on those services.
The useful goal is to limit the tracking routes you can control: enable browser protections, check Meta’s current activity setting, and avoid unnecessary connected logins. No measured effectiveness percentage for these steps is established by the cited sources.
