A cited oven manual gives 6–10 minutes for well-done bacon under its specified setup, while published baking recipes range from about 10 to 25 minutes. Those figures are not directly interchangeable: thickness, oven, rack position and desired crispness all affect the finish.
How baking and broiling differ
Baking cooks bacon in the oven’s surrounding heat. The cited recipes use 400°F or 425°F and place the strips on a pan, sometimes with a rack. Broiling directs heat from above, so the distance between the bacon and broil element matters more and the cook can move quickly.
| Factor | Baking | Broiling |
|---|---|---|
| Published timing | 10–15 minutes at 400°F in a 2015 University of Illinois Extension activity; 20–25 minutes at 425°F in National Pork Board directions; or 10–16 minutes total in an America’s Test Kitchen recipe published by Texas Public Radio in 2011, depending on slice thickness. | 6–10 minutes for well-done bacon at rack position 4 in one oven manufacturer’s owner manual. The manual calls broiling times approximate. |
| Setup | Use a rimmed, foil-lined baking sheet; a rack is optional in the National Pork Board method. | Use the appliance’s specified rack position and a broiler pan with an insert so fat drains below. |
| Best fit | A pan-based batch and a less hands-on approach after placing the pan in the oven. | A short cook when you can monitor the bacon closely. |
| Main timing variables | Oven behavior, slice thickness, crispness preference, preheating and pan arrangement. | Distance from the broil element, slice thickness, appliance design, crispness preference and fat management. |
The published times are examples from specific recipes and an appliance manual, not a universal bake-versus-broil test. The available sources do not establish that one method always makes bacon crispier or tastes better.
How to bake bacon
Use a rimmed baking sheet that fits your oven and can hold rendered fat. Keep strips in a single layer rather than overlapping them. The following are separate recipe methods; pick one and check the bacon as it cooks.

- University of Illinois Extension: Bake at 400°F for 10–15 minutes, with time depending on strip thickness. The activity was published in 2015: University of Illinois Extension.
- National Pork Board: Use a preheated 425°F oven and a lipped sheet pan; a lightly sprayed cooling rack is optional. Its directions give 20–25 minutes: National Pork Board.
- America’s Test Kitchen, as published by Texas Public Radio in 2011: At 400°F, roast for 5–6 minutes, rotate the pan front to back, then cook another 5–6 minutes for thin-cut bacon or 8–10 minutes for thick-cut: the published recipe.
Bacon continues to crisp as it cools, according to the University of Illinois Extension activity. Check the texture near the end of cooking and account for that carryover when deciding when to remove it.
How to broil bacon
- Check your oven’s owner manual. Use its broiler-pan setup and rack position rather than assuming all broilers are alike. One manufacturer’s manual lists bacon at rack position 4 for 6–10 minutes to well done; it labels broiling times approximate: oven owner manual.
- Use the broiler insert. It lets rendered fat drain into the pan beneath. The cited manual warns that incorrect broiler-pan use can cause spattering, smoke, flare-ups or grease fires.
- Stay close and monitor the strips. Broiling uses direct heat from above, and cooking time changes with the distance from the burner and bacon thickness. Whirlpool’s general broiling guidance explains the top-down heat and advises adjusting rack position for the food and appliance: Whirlpool broiling guidance. Its general preheat suggestion is about five minutes, but follow your appliance manual first.
Which method is faster?
Broiling can be faster under the cited instructions: one oven manual gives 6–10 minutes for well-done bacon, compared with baking recipes that give 10–25 minutes or a staged 10–16-minute method. That comparison is only a guide, not a promise. The sources use different ovens, rack or pan arrangements, slice thicknesses and doneness targets; follow your recipe and appliance manual, then judge the strips themselves.

Food safety and practical cautions
- Cook raw pork bacon fully in one session. USDA FSIS says not to partially cook raw bacon, refrigerate it and finish cooking later. Cooking time depends on bacon type, thickness, heat and desired crispness: USDA FSIS bacon guidance.
- Do not rely on a temperature reading from a thin slice. FSIS notes that measuring bacon’s temperature is difficult; bacon cooked crisp should have reached a safe temperature. Cured bacon may remain pink because of curing agents.
- Do not rinse raw bacon. USDA FSIS warns that rinsing raw meat can spread bacteria through splashing; proper cooking kills germs: USDA FSIS guidance on washing raw meat.
- Contain rendered fat. For baking, use a rimmed pan. For broiling, use the insert specified by the appliance manual; fat exposed to intense broiler heat can create a fire hazard.
The cited material does not establish a health or nutrition advantage for broiling over baking. USDA FSIS says nitrosamine levels depend on several variables, including cooking method and doneness, but does not provide a head-to-head comparison of these two methods in the cited guidance.
